| DyloniusFunk05-17-05, 10:06 AM | My friends and i are in the middle of a long Ebberon game that our DM plans to go all the way to epic in. Those of you who checxk the Ebberon boards probably saw me talking about it a while ago. Anyway, I've taken four levels of artificer, and was getting somewhat bored with me. Now anything against the clas, but i was finding the rules for itme creation a bit hard to grasp, particularly with the artificer and trying to fifure out what needs a UMD check to make and what dosen't etc etc. And so since our aprty didn't have any kind of arcane "blaster", i opted to take a level of scorcerer. Figured it went well with my character concept of a guy who lost his memory after falling froma cliff and was trying to relearn everything from his previous life. I justified it by saying that leveling represented my character slowly recovering from his amnesia( yeah i know it's not realistic, but this is a game where fighting dragons is part of a day's work sometimes, sometimes realism has to br thrown out the window). Anyway, what i wanted to know is if i made a good decision in multiclassing. The real issue is that we're around 4-5th level and there's six of us. RIght now i can only access 1st level Sorc spells. I doubt that a 1st level Magic Missle will be much help against a CR 6 or 7 baddie. ALso i should mention that right now we're in prusuit of a vampire(or vampiric type creature, not quite sure yet). So i guess i can summarize what i want in two distinct questions. 1.Taking into account my Character level(Art4/Sorc1), my spell level(Artificer: Level 3 infusions. Sorceror:Level 1 spells), the levels of the rest of the team, and the enemies we're gonna be fighting, would it be in my best interest to forget about the blasting aspect of a Sorc and concentrate on other aspects, such as summoning, or divinations? 2. I would like to continue taking Artificer levels again. Is this a good idea if i want to play an effective spellcaster, or should i just concentrate on Sorc? I should mention that one the party is a Warforged Artificer, who dosen't have access to the Craft Reserve(a special poll of points artificers can use instead of XP for item creation). Right now at Art 4 I have Scribe Scroll, Brew Potion and Craft Wondorous Item. I was thinking of maybe sticking to the utility items like scrolls and potiions and maybe asisting him on larger items like wands and rings. So that's my situation. if anyone has any advice or ideas, i would be most greatful. |

A single level of sorcerer gets you some great utility spells, but he'll never make a good blaster. Surprising as it may seem, a level or two of sorcerer works better with physical combat characters than spellcasters (can you say true strike?). I should mention that one the party is a Warforged Artificer, who dosen't have access to the Craft ReserveUh, why not? I couldn't find any mention of such a rule in either the Artificer or Warforged sections. That said, two artificers in one party is probably too many. Admittedly, they are better than wizards and sorcerers in physical combat, but not by much (similar to expert vs commoner). Artificers tend to work best when buffing and supporting other characters, which means you need someone to support. |

About the only items you're likely to make that won't require UMD are magic weapons and armor with no special abilities. (Actually, now that you've got a level of sorcerer, you don't need to use UMD if the only spell prerequisites are spells you know from your sorcerer levels, but you know so few spells that that probably won't come up much.) |

Admittedly, this isn't the default situation. |
