| Thungrum_The_Exile03-17-06, 09:49 PM | I am planing on making a monk. taking him to lvl 6 then taking the PrC of Pyrokineticist. The only problem is that a monk has to be Lawful and Pyro has to be Chaotic. Here's my plan, is it believeable. The monk grew up in a society where you don't choose your proffession it is chosen for you at an appropriat age. He was forced into "monkdom" by his society. Wanting to please his parents/friends/instructors he knuckles down to the work and begins to obey even if not really taking to the "laws" of his instructor. Durning this time he is also trained as an alchemist. It just so happens that at level 6 he discovers that fire (his favourite toy) comes in alchemical form. he bigins to make it regularly and use it in his battles. Now if you have ever seen a male with fire you know it brings out the most chaotic side of any man. So his laws slowly at first but more suddenly towards the end he begins to fanatically use flame in all that he does. then after seeing a firebreather on the streets he decides to dedicate himself to learning all that he can about controling/manipulating fire. So like I said, is it believable? |
| celtredleg03-17-06, 11:52 PM | No not really believable. I certainly would not let you do it in my game. |

The second part is incredibly weak - he sees a firebreather on the streets and begins a Pyro? WEAK. Instead: He's always been fascinated by fire, ever since he was a small child. Being that it wasn't the "proper" source of interest for a monk, his teachers drilled his love of fire out of him (or at the least, forced him into not using it around them). As he's now grown and moved out into the world adventuring, he moves further and further away from the teachings of his order, and his "no fire" discipline begins to slack off. He grows increasingly fascinated with fire again. If you're only just beginning this character now, it makes it a lot easier than taking an existing monk. RP the monk as intrigued by fire, but fighting his 'dark impulses' and trying to keep to his monk teachings. As he approaches Lvl 6, an event (probably need to bring your DM in on this one) like a great fire or something pushes him over the edge, and he surrenders to the pyromaniac that was always inside him... |
| Thungrum_The_Exile03-18-06, 12:39 AM | Yeah that is more what I meant, just getting my ideas down wasn't working for me |
| High Octane03-18-06, 01:30 AM | Maybe you shouldnt plan the roleplaying path for your character. Isn't it the DM's job to make the situations and you decide how your character reacts? |
| Steel9110103-18-06, 01:39 AM | If you turn CG, wouldn't you then lose all your Monk abilities? |
| Thungrum_The_Exile03-18-06, 01:54 AM | Quote from the SRD on classes A monk who becomes nonlawful cannot gain new levels as a monk but retains all monk abilities |
| Dag03-18-06, 02:10 AM | That's pure cheese man. Pick a class and an alignment and be true to it. Stop waffling around just because it will make your character more powerful and/or Cooler. |
| Thungrum_The_Exile03-18-06, 02:24 AM | Dag you have every right to your opinion. I am not about making an "uber" character. I am about making an interesting character. I like the concept of monk in that martial arts is more interesting than running a sword through them. I also find fire fun. Personall I see both the L side of a monk and the C side of a pyro as stereotypical and generalizations. why cant a monk be lawful in the sense that he say "won't ever start a fight but will always end one" and chaotic in the sense of "I am more than happy to sneak into someone elses property and take their belongings" (hence being neutral) and why cant a pyro be chaotic in the sense that he likes to burn stuff, but lawful in that he will never damage an innocents property (hence neutral). I am aware that a lawful pyro is pretty much impossible and a chaotic monk would be too undiciplined to learn his skills but to say that they are only one allignment (on that axis) is narrow-minded and legalistic |

Durning this time he is also trained as an alchemist. This implies that he is not Lawful but in fact is Neutral - and thus would never have managed (in strict rulesy sense) to even be first level as a monk. Instead he would probably be a multiclass fighter/rogue who faked his "monkdom" (kind of like a sorcerer who fakes wizardome). |
| Thungrum_The_Exile03-18-06, 03:45 AM | true while he is by my description not truely lawful he subdjugates himself to the "laws" which haveing know martial artists myself is all that it takes to become one. He forces himself to be disciplined and in doing so becomes good at the skills of a monk, but still doesn't have the personality of one. Basically I will be approaching my DM and asking if he would see it fit (under these circumstances) to make the required alignments for both classes include neutral. As I see it the monk shows my intended characters more lawful side and the pyro shows his more chaotic one. however not really letting one over-power the other |
| Kalai_Eljahn03-19-06, 12:35 PM | I've never seen a male with fire, in the pyromaniac sense, but I've seen several females with it. :mymy: Reminds me of myself, if I wasn't scared of my fascination with fire...my characters are pyros for me... |
