| Hasmead_Guy01-12-06, 07:52 PM | I've started my fair share of silly threads, but hear me out. Have you guys noticed that a lot gamers have this unbathed, even unwiped scent they emit? I'm a member of the RPGA, and it seems every table I sit at has this guy somewhere that gives off this offensive odor. It's the exact same smell every time also! I laughed it off, thinking it was a nasty coincedence, but I went to a gaming convention and it was at almost every group. I had to excuse myself at one point because my eyes were watering. I talked to the guy who runs the hobby shop and he said it's typical (Read: stereotypical), but couldn't say why. Has anyone here run across the same thing? I don't think it's me, because I've never noticed it before and now I make it a point to shower and put on all clean clothes before I game, and it's still there. I don't say anything, but God, it's gross as hell. DISCLAIMER: I'm not stupid. I know everyone who answers will be a gamer, so don't think I'm accusing the lot of you of poor hygeine. I'm a gamer too, and so are some of my friends, and the private game my DM runs never has seen this problem. BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF GAMERS WHO SMELL LIKE ****. How is this? |
| Cymraegmorgan01-12-06, 08:32 PM | BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF GAMERS WHO SMELL LIKE ****. How is this? Maybe it is the bat guano everyone carries in their spell component pouch. :D |
| Pz.Az.04Maus01-12-06, 08:40 PM | NOTE TO SELF*: MAKE Houserule that anyone who smells instantly has to leave the premisese, even in an RPGA Tourney, or be subject to an instant shower with a gardenhose, and returned home immediatly. Including the DM; I'm seriously going to put this in.. On another note, I think I've got to start stocking up on deoderant, and have to start having a life. |
| Morotis01-12-06, 08:57 PM | This has happened to me too, I usually Lean over, sniff them and say loudly. "WOAH! It's you!" They get the picture. I have in fact, been accused of being the smelly one in the group. Everyone I suppose has those 'Bad smell days' like you Ate too much of that Garlic pasta before you went to the game or you've been so ridiculously busy for the past 2 days a proper shower has not been had. It happens... If it happens at every meeting of every group your in, then you're either cursed (By a -2 Amulet of Phatasmic Smells) or your imagining it. I once read that Imagining bad smells is a sign of Brain Tumors as the tumor usually grows on the inside of the skull and pushed into a part of the brain that controls you senses. :D |
| Loki_God'o'Chaos01-12-06, 09:03 PM | Well, I live in a fairly small town, seriously, there are like a max of 8 of us who actually play DnD in this town. And Ive noticed that 4 of those 8 always smell that way, and then 2 smell that way during the summer. I think its just a general Roleplaying thing, Lack of a real social life, and a lack of a decent girl. Seems to be common effects that lead to this, or that this lead to, Im not sure. 2 of the 4 that are like it all the time come from really crappy families, are in their teens and are just generally lowlevel people (Orcs if I didnt know any better), but yeah, I think its just something about playing the game that does that to at least 1 in every 6 people who play |
| fuzzypants01-12-06, 11:35 PM | Maybe, instead of discovering a chest full of gold during an adventure, it should be a chest full of soap and loofahs. And then you can pass bathing supplies out at breaktime and show everyone where your shower is. |
| Tuah01-12-06, 11:48 PM | Best thing to do is hold your hand over your nose, and if anyone asks, just say, "Someone smells bad. :P " |
| SnowbearK01-12-06, 11:51 PM | Maybe, instead of discovering a chest full of gold during an adventure, it should be a chest full of soap and loofahs. And then you can pass bathing supplies out at breaktime and show everyone where your shower is. SHOWER SCENE! WOO-HOODY-HOO! :P |
| Dragontooth01-13-06, 12:38 AM | Well luckly in our group nobody stinks... Unless its someone passing gas. |
| Argon_Asimov01-13-06, 12:44 AM | In the past, I played in a game with a total of 7-8 players... big table, so the first session, I didn't really notice the near-legendary stench that was "Sean". I mean, I noticed it, clear across two whole freaking tables, but dismissed it as just general gaming stink. Oh, how mistaken I was. Next session, I show up late and had to sit at the end of the table, directly next to our antagonist, the reeking pile of human stench who I will refer to as "Sean". It was honestly like being slapped in the face when I sat down. I mean, I didnt' think a human being could smell that way and not be, oh say... a walking corpse. This was a bodily odor so strong is was visible as a wispy haze. So foul, that solid deodorent melted in its pressence. It was the kind of stink that you can taste, the kind that stays with you after you take five showers. A stench that could kill a small child. I literally had to get up every few minutes and go outside to catch a breath of fresh air. |
| Tyler Do'Urden01-13-06, 01:11 AM | There was a roundtable discussion type deal at a local everything convention (sci-fi, gaming, anime, etc.) called "How to Get Laid" IIRC wherein they gave gamers bars of soap and made them sit through a lecture about hygene. We smell. Something about gaming tends to make biological necessities like nourishment, excretion, hygene, and social interaction take a backseat to whatever it is we're into. I myself haven't showered in just shy of two days. I will tomorrow morning (because I have a game later), but still. Like everything, it's a matter of degree. I don't generally smell at any range beyond 6 inches from some sort of pit unless I've been working out for an hour (that or I'm surrounded by the most polite people in the world). But there are people who let themselves go. I was in one dude's house once killing gnats with my bare hands ('cause I couldn't possibly miss) and he started yelling at me about killing his friends. His basement had an atmosphere that had me flashing back to the Dead Alewives as "the pungent stench of mildew emanates from the wet dungeon walls.' WHERE ARE THE CHEETOS!?" Anyway, there's a limit. If you have to put your head inside someone's clothing to smell something mildly unpleasant, they're fine. If you have to leave the room because you can't get a breath of fresh air, PigPen's got to go. Anything in between must be dealt with on a case-by-case basis wirh varying amounts of Febreeze. |
| Hasmead_Guy01-13-06, 02:23 AM | Dude, that story about the gnats in the basement, and how the host called them his friends, that was great! |
| RobCfordJr01-13-06, 02:39 AM | Heh yeah gamers can funk pretty bad, especially at conventions where they'd rather game on then bathe; ironic however since most of them go to the conventions looking for gamer chicks! Perhaps they think they're giving off gamer pheremones and in turn will attract their own personal venus di milo's. You always seem to have nicknames for them too...some of ours were Caveman, Ass-scratch, Nutt-Jiggler, among others usually for the painful way they would stand in line waiting for a game to begin, rather than go wash the flesh eating parasites off of their skin. Nutt-Jiggler was funny...he'd carry a HUGE container of coffee and hit every late night gaming session he could find; most of the ppl he gamed with however, already had his face and name memorized NOT to allow into their games for his personal hygine (or lack thereof). Myself? Perhaps I was mean. If someone funked at my game, I'd let them know....repeatedly! One time we even began carrying around car air freshners if certain people said they were coming to the game on the following sessions. Reflecting back to both those days and this post, I don't know which is worse now...their funk or the fact that we all managed to stick out gaming with them? Oh well... Game On! |
| Phael01-13-06, 04:07 AM | Myself? Perhaps I was mean. If someone funked at my game, I'd let them know....repeatedly! One time we even began carrying around car air freshners if certain people said they were coming to the game on the following sessions. Pure Genius. I hand out a small booklet to new gamers that join my group. Its not house rules, but rather Group Rules similar to a club charter. It's got rules and stuff that were decided when we first started the group. Y'know stuff like pitch in $2 for pizza for game night, if you're late the game goes on without you, etc. New rule I think I'll add: If you show up to the game with body odour that can be smelled by anyone sitting at the table you WILL be forced to wear a pine tree car freshner around your neck for the duration of the game - or else leave, shower, and return. :evillaugh: Bwahaha, I love it. |
| babysamurai01-13-06, 04:33 AM | Aside from the body odour, we still have to deal with the overweight-beard-virginity-still live with their parents thing. |
| RobCfordJr01-13-06, 04:45 AM | Aside from the body odour, we still have to deal with the overweight-beard-virginity-still live with their parents thing. You know Nutt-Jiggler? ;) New rule I think I'll add: * If you show up to the game with body odour that can be smelled by anyone sitting at the table you WILL be forced to wear a pine tree car freshner around your neck for the duration of the game - or else leave, shower, and return. Be wary of the Live Action Players who think the Pine Tree (and funk) indicates you are either a Feral Druid or playing Werewolf! |
| GreatWyrm01-13-06, 05:38 AM | Aside from the body odour, we still have to deal with the overweight-beard-virginity-still live with their parents thing. No we don't.. except for the virginity thing, unless you want to go grab a hooker.. |
| Pandaemoni01-13-06, 08:22 AM | Maybe, instead of discovering a chest full of gold during an adventure, it should be a chest full of soap and loofahs. And then you can pass bathing supplies out at breaktime and show everyone where your shower is. I agree. Perhaps, when your players find their next pile of treasure you could add: "Also in the hoard you find Right Guard +6, a Washcloth of Mighty Scrubbing and some cologne. I think you should give it to Bob's paladin, as he clearly needs it." Sadly, come gamers are socially challenged in real life and sometimes the merits of bathing...and not *only* bathing but being thorough while bathing...are lost on a few of them. In a regular game, I think you are well within your rights to take them aside and say something (as tactfully as possible, but without dodging the issue or speaking too euphemistically). It might embarass them a bit, but it's best for the overall campaign, player unity and everyone's general enjoyment. At a one off GenCon affair, it seems pointless. You'll never see them again, so (apart from possibly doing them a favor by possibly clueing them into the normal social niceties) embarassing them does no one much good. I do agree that I'm sure we all have our "riper" days, but it seems to me that the typical gaming session should be odor-free. |
| Missing Minds01-13-06, 08:24 AM | Ah.. the Rolla slounger syndrome as it was called in my college. Like its been said, when one doesn't have a life outside gaming, and they are in a comfort zone, why bother with anything else? If they have a job, normally its something like a gastation attendent or fast food or something aka a job where they get no respect. But in a place full of Comp Sci's and forgein students (who's normal habit from their culture is to bathe about once a week, and just use perfume/colonge the rest of the time to mask it) the funk gets really bad. It got bad enough to where one of the more respected teachers told the class that if anyone wouldn't/coundn't aford soap, he would personally supply it for them. |
| RedWizard01-13-06, 08:41 AM | You have indeed hit upon a sad fact of gaming. Lets face it, half the gamers in the average "open" game at the store will be composed of either fat, cheeto-eating guys with crumbs strewn over their unwashed clothes or teenage kids farting every five minutes. This adds up. I'm married and work in an office envireoment, so I know my colothes are clean and my hygiene is kept up. But I remember being single and not washing the clothes for a week at a time. Though I still showered twice a day. Hmm, maybe I was guilty of farting on occasion. My wife dropped by to give me something once and that night she was laughing and telling me how it stank in the small room dedicated to gaming. |
| strcpy01-13-06, 08:58 AM | Had a guy in our group who we renamed. Hence forth he was known as the Infernal Troglodtye. He took the hint and invested in some soap and deo. The smell might be gone, but the name has not :P |
| The Phantom Flan Flinger01-13-06, 09:04 AM | Sounds like I've been lucky - I've only gamed with one person who was, erm, perhaps a little whiffy from time to time. He was a nice enough guy and I decided I would rather put up with it than embarrass both of us by saying anything. I just made sure his seat was next to the (open) window. As for other people's living arrangements, sex lives etc - not my business, not my problem. |
| Elbethamore01-13-06, 09:48 AM | I've taken to buying my splatbooks online, just to avoid the stench in the gaming stores. I just don't understand it, myself. I can't leave my apartment without showering thoroughly, much less sit around a table with a bunch of other people for hours on end. It's just unkind. |
| Tyler Do'Urden01-13-06, 11:07 AM | Within gaming groups, part of the mindset is that "I don't have to impress these people." They're not special company, they're your friends. You shower for a job interview or a date, you don't shower for the sunday game. Doesn't apply to everyone, but it's there. This particular group doesn't usually get to the toxic level, but if they do just nudge 'em and go, "Dude, you kinda smell today." And they'll probably go "Yeah..." "...well, you wanna go do something about it?" "Not particularly. Why, what are you offering?" Then there's people that just plain aren't aware of the layers of filth their bodies produce. It might be a variant of the fart principle: the smell doesn't bother me, so how bad can it be really? But it's more likely that they really don't know. See, I've seen Learning Channels specials (back before it became the Decorating Channel) about skin flakes and body oil and sweat and bacteria and all the awful, awful things that come out of a human being just by being alive. Some people haven't. They quite simply don't know that they stink. Most boys go through this at some point between ages 10 and 14. They identify themselves with the statement "But I just showered yesterday," or something similar. Usually a little education goes a long way, a short lecture about "Part of getting older means that your body begins producing large amounts of filth." (visual aids are great at this point) Extol the virtues of soap and daily hygene and it should get better. In extremely rare cases, there are people that deliberately abstain from bathing just to bother people. ...you're on your own for an explanation of those people. I got nothin'. |
| Cymraegmorgan01-13-06, 11:23 AM | I gues I am incredibly lucky, as I have never encountered this problem. The worse problem in my group is the couple with the new puppy that occasionally don't look where they step on their way to my place. Which is why I always have name brand bleach wipes handy. :D |
| Spike_Fightwicky01-13-06, 11:29 AM | My group's pretty good, we don't have anyone who bathes less than once a day. However, it's not just D&D that brings out the worst (smells) in people. On weekends I'll sometimes go to the gaming store that's conveniently close to place where our group plays to chat it up with the employees, but the extreme odors from the magic and yu-gi-oh players is overwhelming. I feel sorry leaving the poor store workers alone with a room of Daft Funk, but it's all I can take. And from the conversations I hear when I'm there, it sounds like 80% of these people have no idea what life outside of their CCG is like... |
| Ozymandias V.01-13-06, 11:32 AM | To OP: I have never experienced this problem. Not in my games, not in gaming stores, not at LAN parties... But I generally don't hang around people I don't know, and everyone I know manags to keep themselves clean and toxin-free. |
| cambric01-13-06, 11:35 AM | Thankfully, in 25+ years, I've never encountered "regular" issues like this. We had one guy who would come over and once in a blue moon smell like he hadn't showered in a few days, but it wasn't "horrible" or anything like that. I think if someone showed up smelling bad all the time, I definitely would come up with something to say...I'm there to have fun, not to get sick. Cam P.S. This is one of the funniest threads I've read in a long time though...some people have suffered!! |
| green_yawgmoth01-13-06, 01:28 PM | My group promotes bathing as one of our basic tenets. :P http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| bebepaquito01-13-06, 01:56 PM | You always seem to have nicknames for them too...some of ours were Caveman, Ass-scratch, Nutt-Jiggler, among others usually for the painful way they would stand in line waiting for a game to begin, rather than go wash the flesh eating parasites off of their skin. LOL I know what you mean, I myself am quite fortunate about my gamming group, but my work well......... thats another story. We have this one guy, and funny enough one of his more popular nicknames is Caveman. Could be because he stinks like one, or cuz he thinks like one. We are still trying to find out. As to where the source of this smell comes from I really do not know. I know the guy uses deoderant and I know he takes showers. How well he takes them I dont know. But some ppl just have some smell too them. This particular idividual has been know to perspirate is 30 degree weather. Sometimes its just not their fault. Could they do something about it, yes. Now this does not mean that everyone who smells can use this excuse. I was at a casino once playing Texas Holdem and a guy sat down next to me. He was fat, his hair oily, and he smelled like he had not showered and ****** in his pants for quite a while. That man does not fall under the fore-mentioned excuse. I had to get up and walk away. If they smell boot them, or have the DM PK him :) |
| Hasmead_Guy01-14-06, 05:19 AM | PK? Pull Kindneys? Pilfer Kings? Play Klondike? |
| SmithyW01-14-06, 05:44 AM | I think people that live a sedentary lifestyle can find it easy to "forget" about their daily clensing needs. They sit indoors in an air-conditioned home and are only exposed to the elements for a brief minute as they go to their (also climate-controlled) vehicle on their way to work in a large air-conditioned building. They think "man, *I* don't sweat or work out or get hot, I can skip a shower before going to game." While they don't smell like nappy sweaty socks, that funny "funk" surrounding them is two layers of dead skin. Most don't realize how bad it is because it's slowly gotten worse over time (maybe two days since the last bath?), rather than our poor noses that get hit with it all at once. I discovered this mindset one day during a long chat with an ex-roommate; she was a "computer nerd" rather than your typical "gamer". Rather disturbingly, I can actually tell the difference between "I really needed a shower and didn't have time" funk and the "I don't sweat so why should I shower" funk. The latter is a more cronic problem, tho :( P.S. Am I babbling yet? it's almost 5am, so I should be babbling by now... |
| DemonsOfRazgriz01-14-06, 09:13 AM | The worse problem in my group is the couple with the new puppy that occasionally don't look where they step on their way to my place. Which is why I always have name brand bleach wipes handy. :D I agree. That's also can be a reason why a person sometimes stink. My friend once had the same problem couldn't take his eye off of his girlfriend for one minute and put both feet into it. So next time you have a person with a stink just say who steped in what and tell them to check their shoes. And I can't remember but sometimes that smell could be part of a sickness mental, or bodilly. |
| Leukrythus01-14-06, 11:26 AM | I've taken to buying my splatbooks online, just to avoid the stench in the gaming stores. I just don't understand it, myself. I can't leave my apartment without showering thoroughly, much less sit around a table with a bunch of other people for hours on end. It's just unkind. There is some good stuff in this thread! I stopped by a game store and watched a game a few years back, and this short fat guy with body odor had a character with a charisma of 25, and his main goal was to get his character laid. Conventions, game stores and open games attract these types like a moth to a flame. Our games were always by invitation only, included a few couples (the women would keep the guys in line), always in a private home, and we all had jobs. How could a person have a clue on managing a kingdom if their goal in life was to flip a burger or add salt to the fries? |
| HammerHeart8101-14-06, 02:23 PM | I've had one or maybe two that had some BO/hygene issues in my gaming career. Lot of the people that I met that lacked hygene have been in the working in factories and third shift stock at Wal-mart. Much like the gamers they think that they don't do much to socialize, why bother with bathing and deodorant. |
| Leukrythus01-14-06, 03:45 PM | I consider gaming to be socializing with normal, mentally balanced, clean people with a social life. I choose not to hang out with stinky, anti-social, or odd people no matter what I'm doing, unless I'm volunteering in a soup kitchen for the homeless. |
| Hasmead_Guy01-14-06, 09:44 PM | [QUOTE=Leukrythus]I consider gaming to be socializing with normal, mentally balanced, clean people with a social life. Well I don't, no matter how much I wish it were otherwise. Let me tell you, in my years of gaming I've met some wonderful people, and some weirdos from unknown dimentions. People who emit the odor mentioned in my first post. People who would rather buy movies, watch WWF and play D&D than buy diapers for their kids. People whose floor is nothing short of garbage pit. One guy worked at arby's, had 20+ gigs of porn on his PC, and never cleaned his bathroom. One asian guy I gamed with was over 250 pounds, lived in some apartment, and acted like he was twelve. And some, to be frank, were mentally ill- they HAD to be, since they were playing with 13 year olds at a gaming shop. I feel bad saying this, and if any of the above applies to you, don't think I'm saying you're a bad person, but really now. Don't feed the stigma. |
| Tyler Do'Urden01-15-06, 12:43 AM | I consider gaming to be socializing with normal, mentally balanced, clean people with a social life. Isn't that nice for you. Unfortunately, beggars can't be choosers and many of us live below the poverty line. That or we keep friends who may not always be the best judge of character. |
| Morbid01-15-06, 12:45 AM | I've learned how to rid myself of other gamers' odor. Lots and tons of Incense. I would say about 4 sticks every 2 hours should keep the rank low. Though for maybe 6 to 8 players or more (especially if they all smell) then you may need about a pound an hour. Just make sure you take into account the ammount of people, the room size, the time, and the asthmatic qualities of everyone. (some people kinda die when you light incense) |
| katarl01-15-06, 03:26 PM | Incense!? As if dnds cult image wasn't bad enough! I've never personally experienced the BO problem that apparently exists in dnd, only ever at larger regional gatherings, but then the whole culture here is a bit different. I can't smell any of my players over the screen, only their doritoes. |
| Phaseroth01-15-06, 04:34 PM | In my current group of four, three of us are professional restaurant cooks (the fourth is the wife of one of us). We cooks definitely acquire a smell after hours in a kitchen, and our games usually take place right after work. It works out that we don't smell each other, though. Either we're simply immune to the smell by now, or we cancel each other out ;) I lived in a homeless shelter for a while, and spent some time working in the silkscreening shop that they had there. The maintenance guy, Mike, literally had no sense of smell due to some kind of accident when he was young. He also never showered, and thanks to his inability to smell, he had absolutely no idea how bad he reeked. Let me tell you, when other homeless people don't want to be around you because of your stench, you're really bad! This guy had a habit of walking into the computer room in the shop and plopping down a chair right next to people. Usually me. My eyes would start burning and watering almost immediately, and I would have to get up and leave the room. I finally complained to the shop manager, and the he had a talk with the guy. Told him he was going to have to shower at least every other day if he was going to hang around inside the shop. It got a lot better after that, but sometimes the guy had a distinctive odor that suggested he had simply rubbed a dry bar of soap over his body. |
| Leukrythus01-15-06, 07:22 PM | Isn't that nice for you. Unfortunately, beggars can't be choosers and many of us live below the poverty line. That or we keep friends who may not always be the best judge of character. I know many people who live below the poverty line and are clean, intelligent and socially well adjusted. It is the later characteristics that I evaluate when determining whom I want to associate with, not their income statements. I'm sorry to hear about your situation, but that's no reason not to practice socially acceptable hygene. |
| Darkuwa01-15-06, 07:50 PM | I take a shower everyday, I can't be considered "awake" without a shower. Luckily none of the people I have gamed with have had problems with odor, though I've only gamed with a total of about 10 people. |
| CryoSilver01-15-06, 08:00 PM | I'm suddenly much more appreciative of playing online... Bathing was never a real problem with my group, except for one or two itinerant players. I shower copiously, since I have somewhat of a social life, and encourage anyone I play with table-top to do the same, though sometimes that's asking a lot at an aquaculture school, where we play with dead fish all day. |
| Leukrythus01-15-06, 08:36 PM | though sometimes that's asking a lot at an aquaculture school, where we play with dead fish all day. LMAO, then the scent of an overtly ripe person might be the lesser of two evils! |
| CryoSilver01-15-06, 08:45 PM | Isn't that the truth. The stench is at times overwhelming, especially when the sophomores open up a new barrel of squid bait... |
| Tyler Do'Urden01-16-06, 05:13 AM | I know many people who live below the poverty line and are clean, intelligent and socially well adjusted. Not much for metaphor, are we? Beggars can't be choosers and many of us live below the poverty line. The first half of this sentence is an old saying about how when your options are limited, you can't be picky and get exactly what you want, which in this context means that you don't always have a readily available pool of stable, clean people with social lives that also play D&D. The second half of the sentence directly relates to the first half metaphorically, meaning that many people are in such a situation. If you'd been paying attention, that line would have been freakin' funny. Gawd... |
| boshka02-04-06, 01:20 PM | This is a wonderful thread and sitting at work I have enjoyed reading it to be sure. My personal fix for such things is rather simple if not direct. I carry a backpack with all my gaming stuff in it no matter where I go. So if im at someones home or the gaming shop its simple. I get all the stuff out that I will need. Then I open my sidepocket on the backpack pull out my air freshener. You know the ones you twist them and they pop open and it sits on the table next to me. No matter if its roleplaying, cards or miniatures it sits there. If anyone ask I just say " Its to cover up the smell im not sure what its from, but its bad...dont you smell it?" and I leave it at that. Most get the point some dont, but if someone pulling out the smell good. And then setting it down in front of them doesnt tip them off nothing will. I have also been know to carry the Stick Ups Air Freshener and place them under the tables at my local gaming shop. |
| Jimmy_the_Saint02-04-06, 06:20 PM | Wonderful thread. Glad I don't have this problem with my current group. Does bring something to mind; A few years back the four of us, one stereotypical overweight, none too clean living gamer, two other friends (one female), and me went to the aforementioned gamers flat at a Sunday afternoon. My friend and I had been there a few times before, so we weren’t really surprised to see the mess the place was in. You know the kind, the sort that piles up in the course of a Saturday nights drinking with buddies, tables and floor covered in empty beer cans, full ashtrays, general litter from snacks, etc… Now, all three guys picked up a beer and the girl wanted something from a bottle, don’t remember, soda of some sort. The gamer walks up to the table, picks up a glass from somewhere between the refuge and after the barest glance proclaims: “I think this one’s still clean”, before pouring her the drink. I’ll never forget the look on that poor girl’s face. :yuck: This guy seriously wasn’t aware of doing anything out of the ordinary, which makes it all the sadder. So yes, they are out there. |
| bholdr_mage02-05-06, 03:32 AM | My wife and I noticed this today coincidentally. My gaming store has rules, and one of them is to clean and bathe reguarly. They had an auction and I had to leave to get some air at many points during it today. Sometimes, I pulled my shirt over my nose because I smell much better than most of the individuals here in good 'ol Joplin Missouri. Funny thread. |
| The Game02-05-06, 10:22 PM | Trogledytes I call them, whether the spelling is correct or not. We have someone like this who games with us. Now, I consider myself to be a pretty friendly guy, but to add to his lung-burning stench, the man (if it could be called that) is highly arrogant with a superiority complex that I cannot understand how he can even have. He eats like a pig, has a ratty unkept beard, beady little eyes, long mangly hair with physically visible grease stains (yes, in his hair, or rather, fur, for he is more akin to beast than man). He is unemployed, and is quite happy to lounge around in his sty all day, collecting his Dole money, eating his chips and devising stupid story lines for games he wants to run but no one wants to play. According to the brave people that live with him (who are my friends), he did not shower for 3 months once, nor did he wash his clothes for 4. You can seriously smell him before you see him. Sticking my face into the carcass of a dead animal left in the heat for a day would be more pleasurable than sitting next to him. He shouldnt be free, he should be studied. As previously stated, I consider myself to be a friendly guy, but when it comes to this Huge Stink Elemental, I tolerate his presence with the maximum of willpower. I openly tell him he stinks, and whenever he asks for lifts I tell him he is not getting within my car because the last time that he did it took me 4 week's and 12 air fresheners to win even the smallest victory against a biological chemical weapon that would make Suddam envious. Even Chuck Norris would be useless against such a power. I feel your pain my friend. I feel your pain. |
| Dereck02-05-06, 10:51 PM | there use to be this guy that went to this gaming store i hanged out at, he smelled so bad that i almost threw up when i walked by him. Finally the store owner took him outside and told him he needed to use some deodorant before he could come back. He doesnt smell as bad as he use to but its hell trying to play a game of Magic with. I think the reason why they dont use deodorant or bathe is A) there kind down on money (not usually the case but can be) or B) there just plain lazy. |
| Ridureyu02-05-06, 11:08 PM | Count me among the group who isn't technically "awake" until I shower. I'm fastidious enough that, generally speaking, I'm totally odor-free - some of the girls at college even noticed it a few times. The only exceptions are: 1. Right after I exercise or work out. However, that's only until I shower, and I *usually* don't make much contact with other people in that in-between time. Thee have been a few exceptions, however - and I usually mention it and apologize. 2. if it's a "bad smell day," which happens to everyone. 3. A few months ago, the water in the house broke. It was fixed three days later - but in that time, I tried my best to be a hermit. Honestly, I could even smell me. |

| Dragoon02-05-06, 11:37 PM | I've always wondered, is it possible to light a match in a room like that and cause a major disaster? You know, everyone here has posted many points and many correct. The thing I hate is how it stays. It's not bad a first, they smell and only light residue. But every week it can get pretty bad and build up. I mean, I've only been near someone who smells pretty bad once or twice. Being the nice person I am, I don't make any notation. But honestly, at a gaming convention, just have a bunch of kids go into an arena for a "special" event and douse them with water and bubbles. If that was mentioned before, sorry. |
| Elrin02-06-06, 10:18 AM | [QUOTE=Dereck] I think the reason why they dont use deodorant or bathe is A) there kind down on money (not usually the case but can be)QUOTE] OMG that is not a reason. I'm seriously one of the most law abiding people in the world, my friends laugh because I WILL NOT steal, rarely lie, all aroudn pally type of stuff(when I'm not being a brutally honest jackarse :P) And over the past year, there have been many long months of unemployment for me and while hte temptation was great I never stole anything.... Except what I needed to not smell bad.. yes, my great shame, I've stolen shampoo :Z but anywyas, where I was going with that, is thats not a reason, they are just lazy, nasty and don't care. Ugh, I've gamed with those types before and I never could stand it... Perhaps we should all persuade the local game stores owners to put up large signs/banners requiring some type of cleanliness.. |
| keith18702-06-06, 05:56 PM | When I was in school there was a guy like that. He stunk up the place every time he was around. Well eventually a bunch of us planed a little something for him. The 8 of us all brought some kind of air freshener/deoderant/perfume to school and we jumped him in the lunch room and just soaked him in it. That was the biggest mistake we ever made. All he did was take off the sweater that took most of the fresheners and put it in his bag. We though he stunk before one that sweater came off people started to choke when he walked past. All our planning just released a monster that not even an army of airfresheners could stop. We suffered the whole day with wattering eyes and choking as he came by. Whats worse is he just dried off the sweater ane wore it for almost a month before washing it. I wonder how his parents could manage that horrid stench. |
| getgoldcardsoul02-06-06, 07:00 PM | I knew this one girl who had like six or seven cats. She came over once (to a house with two cats), and I didn't notice anything at first. On everyone's way out, I and a friend of mine were saying bye to everyone. I sniffed. I asked the other... Me: Hey, you smell that? I think one of the cats did something... Friend: Shh! Me: No, seriously, I think one of the cats took a crap up here, we should find that and clean it! Friend: SSHHHH!! After the girl and her boyfriend were gone, my friend turns to me and says... Friend: That was [her]! Me: Huh? Friend: You were smelling HER! Me:  ... :thinks: ......... :mymy: ... :uh-huh: I was not pleased. Thankfully, I didn't have to put up with it the entire night. Apparently that girl goes without showers for weeks, and when she does, takes only :censored: baths, washing only the chest, mouth and crotch. |
| kam_Islash02-06-06, 07:05 PM | Its usually in pizza and beer groups. Or groups with men in their 40s who eat mexican food. |
| Halo_Light02-06-06, 07:49 PM | "the pungent stench of mildew emanates from the wet dungeon walls.' WHERE ARE THE CHEETOS!?" "They're right beside you." "Wheres the Mountain Dew?" "In the fridge. Duh!" |

| CryoSilver02-06-06, 09:48 PM | Ah; sounds like someone justifies the existence of garden hoses and detergent. |
