| The_Rogue01-25-07, 03:22 PM | I'm interested in making a Gelatinous Cube characther. Could someone post what their strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma would be. Also their modifier, class, and any other info which would help. Heres a pic of the gelatinous cube http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/MM35_gallery/MM35_PG201.jpg |
| bitnine01-25-07, 03:26 PM | Oh, I really thought you were complaining about your players for a second there. I think you rather mean Gelatinous Cubes as Player Characters. |
| Cincinnati01-25-07, 03:30 PM | Do gelatinous cubes even have an intelligence? |
| LordBOB77701-25-07, 03:31 PM | I do not believe we are allowed to post all that. Do you not have the MM? |
| UndeadMouse01-25-07, 03:33 PM | G-Cubes don't make good characters because they have no intellegence, sub-low wisdom and charisma, and almost no dex. thier only good point would be thier hefty constitution bonus of ~16. I would personally advise against trying this. |
| allenchan01-25-07, 03:34 PM | You cannot play a character with an LA of --, which the cube has based on the fact it does not have the required min Int of 3 that grants free will/sentience. That said, if your DM is willing to negotiate an LA for it, you could apply the fiendish template and thus it would have a playable Int (though you'd still be a mute retard). ps: all the necessary info can be found in the srd. |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 03:35 PM | I'm just looking for a brainstorm on their ability and modifiers |
| Artector01-25-07, 03:39 PM | *Hits head against table* Why? Gelatinous Cubes have no intelligence. They don't even have a 1 or a 2. They have none. I think the only help I can offer is to look for the Oozemaster, i'm not sure where it is, but I think it may help. |
| allenchan01-25-07, 03:39 PM | Look at their stats, remove 10 if even, 11 if odd. Whats left is there ability modifiers. Its not that hard, folks. |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 03:42 PM | So...If they dont have any intelligence then how do they move, attack, or do anything? They can be pretty dangerous enemies. |
| gorckat01-25-07, 03:43 PM | Abilities: Str 10, Dex 1, Con 26, Int Ø, Wis 1, Cha 1 So that's what- +0/-9/+16/-10/-9/-9 ? Not very appealing. Amusingly, I have an uneaten Lime Jell-O on my desk from lunch. I'm guessing he's a Wizard- he's not very talkative and doesn't look to sturdy. Probably busy preparing a spell in case I try to eat him. |
| FeceMan01-25-07, 03:44 PM | The problem is that gelatinous cubes aren't designed to be player characters. Somebody has an example of a character playing a gelatinous cube: DM: You come to a fork in the road. PC: I...umm...devour it? |
| Boraxe01-25-07, 03:47 PM | I'm just looking for a brainstorm on their ability and modifiers Sorry, but this is just a dumb idea. |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 03:47 PM | This is true that Gelatinous Cubes have low stats and wouldnt make good chars. But I believe that they could be fixed and they could be a very cool char. to play as. |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 03:53 PM | The problem is that gelatinous cubes aren't designed to be player characters. Then how would you go about making them good player characters? |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 04:02 PM | I'd at least give them 1 or 2 intelligence. How can they move if they dont have a brain? |
| _zx7501-25-07, 04:04 PM | Then how would you go about making them good player characters? Simple answer? you can't. They are mindless bricks of acidic goo that automatically slide towards any organic matter in their sense range and dissolve it. If you want it to become playable, then you need to change everything about it until it becomes so. Remove large penalties, give it sentience, give it a method to speak/interact, and change its physical properties because really... cubes can't climb, balance, or even move over wooden floors (as they will dissolve under it). At which point, it looses all flavor and no longer is recognizable as a cube. It will be something different. IMO you would be better off using something else as your base, or just inventing a new monster from scratch that has the abilities that you want. It would be a lot easier. |
| allenchan01-25-07, 04:10 PM | I'd at least give them 1 or 2 intelligence. How can they move if they dont have a brain? THe same way constructs do, and insects, and zombies. They have a built in instinctual predetermined catalytic for actions that does not mimic actual thought. |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 04:11 PM | Anyone got any example stats that would perfect the Gelatinous Cube as a played characther? |
| Totentanz01-25-07, 04:17 PM | We won't do the work for you. Do some research on what an appropriate PC race/template is, think about what you want, and then post it and let us critique. You also might reconsider the idea completely. :) |
| Boraxe01-25-07, 04:19 PM | Then how would you go about making them good player characters? Make them something other than a gelatious cube. |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 04:20 PM | Maybe some sort of shape shifting feat that allows them to go into different forms such as humanoid? Changing Gelatinous Cube to a Greater Gelatinous Cubes with better stats? |
| Kursk01-25-07, 04:40 PM | G-Cubes don't make good characters because they have no intellegence, sub-low wisdom and charisma, and almost no dex. thier only good point would be thier hefty constitution bonus of ~16. I would personally advise against trying this. I don't know... I had player who played Jello Cube once. Unfortunately, he got eaten. |
| Thelandrach01-25-07, 04:42 PM | Whatever it is, you better take Vow of Poverty, because... no body parts... no magic items. |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 04:46 PM | They use acid as a weapon and they shoot weapons they've absorbed from out of their body. Their main attack is absorb. |
| pukunui01-25-07, 04:46 PM | You can play a gelatinous cube, and you can do it much more simply than what's already been suggested. This is how you do it ... Become the DM. |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 04:50 PM | and you can do it much more simply than what's already been suggested. How so? |
| pukunui01-25-07, 04:55 PM | How so? Uh, did you read my whole post? Hint: Read the bit that's in bold at the bottom. p.s. here's an example of a gelatinous cube with the fiendish template and class levels (gleaned from this WotC Elite Opponents web article: Variant Gelatinous Cubes (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/eo/20060922a)) This highly improbable creature is the result of taking the rules to the very limit. Giving an ooze class levels is usually impossible because these creatures don't have Intelligence scores. However, the fiendish template provides this cube with a 3 Intelligence, and off we go. Monk levels seem to fit very well with the gelatinous cube's other abilities, and the monk class gives the creature some really humorous powers, such as deflecting arrows. Barbarian or fighter levels would work too, but a gelatinous cube is limited in its use of feats became of its generally low attribute scores. The real question with this creature is where it could learn any monk skills. Ooze monasteries aren't exactly plentiful, after all. It must have studied on its own, just like Miyamoto Musashi did. This cube looks like its brethren, except that it has a slight red tinge. It doesn't fly, but it sure moves quickly compared to normal gelatinous cubes. It should provide quite a surprise to adventuring parties, though perhaps it's not as much of a challenge as its CR would indicate. Its AC is still only 6, after all. Any creature that strikes or touches the cube with its body, or that grapples it, automatically takes 1d6 points of acid damage. A creature takes damage from this ability only once per turn. This cube's acid does not harm metal or stone. Engulf (Ex) The fiendish gelatinous cube can simply mow down Large or smaller creatures as a standard action. It cannot make a slam attack during a round in which it engulfs. The cube merely moves over the opponents, affecting as many as it can cover. Opponents can make attacks of opportunity against the cube, but any creature that does so is not entitled to a saving throw. A creature that does not attempt an attack of opportunity must succeed on a DC 14 Reflex save or be engulfed. On a success, it is pushed back or aside (opponent's choice) as the cube moves forward. Engulfed creatures are subject to the cube's paralysis and acid, and are considered to be grappled and trapped within its body. The save DC is Strength-based and includes a +1 racial bonus. Paralysis (Ex) Anyone hit by the cube's slam or engulf attack must succeed on a DC 20 Fortitude save or be paralyzed for 3d6 rounds. The cube can automatically engulf a paralyzed opponent. The save DC is Constitution-based. Transparent (Ex) Fiendish gelatinous cubes are hard to see, even under ideal conditions, and it takes a DC 15 Spot check to notice one. Creatures who fail to notice the cube and walk into it are automatically engulfed. Hook "That gelatinous cube is sure fast. I've never seen one move like that." |

| The_Rogue01-25-07, 05:02 PM | Is the Gelatinous Cube Monk a holy monk? |
| pukunui01-25-07, 05:09 PM | Is the Gelatinous Cube Monk a holy monk? If anything it's unholy. It's got the fiendish template and is LE. However, you still don't seem to be getting what I'm saying. If you want to play a gelatinous cube, BE THE DM!! |
| DarkNick01-25-07, 05:15 PM | I think The Rogue is stirring the pot. But it is a pretty funny idea to play a big block of jelly. You could make up some sort of mutant variant where the cube could have a huminoid shape. We could call it a Man'O'Jelly! |
| pukunui01-25-07, 05:17 PM | Someone mentioned the Oozemaster. Here it is: here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=5359070). |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 05:25 PM | Are they like the monk class? |
| DarkNick01-25-07, 05:26 PM | Are they like the monk class? What's a 'Monk Class'?? ;) |
| pukunui01-25-07, 05:27 PM | Are they like the monk class? No, it's a homemade prestige class. Meaning: a) you'd have to get your DM's permission to use it and b) you'd have to meet the listed requirements in order to take levels in that class. |
| High Octane01-25-07, 05:29 PM | This thread almost made me laugh. Instead it made me hemmorage. |
| pukunui01-25-07, 05:30 PM | Instead it made me hemmorage.We'd better get you to a doctor then ... |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 05:33 PM | Can anyone brainstorm a few weapons a gelatinous cube may have or how it would be able to speak? |
| Gideon_Gideonson01-25-07, 05:37 PM | None, and it wouldn't. IT'S A FREAKIN' BLOCK OF JELLO, NOT A PLAYABLE RACE! Anyway, isn't it much more fun to play a rock? Come on...you know it is. Rock Barbarian, what's not to love? Seriously man...Gelatinous Cubes? If you want it that badly, make it. We're telling you you shouldn't, so, if you want to, do it yourself. |
| pukunui01-25-07, 05:42 PM | Anyway, isn't it much more fun to play a rock? Come on...you know it is. Rock Barbarian, what's not to love?Yeah because a rock doesn't have any vulnerable spots ... except maybe if your opponent is using a rudimentary lathe ... (a :cookie: for anyone who gets the reference) Seriously man...Gelatinous Cubes? If you want it that badly, make it. We're telling you you shouldn't, so, if you want to, do it yourself.I keep telling him there's an easier way. All he has to do is ... become the DM! Then he can play whatever he wants. He could play a whole army of gelatinous cubes, if he really wanted to! |
| Nytmare01-25-07, 05:44 PM | What this man needs is Masters of the Wild so he can play an Oozemaster. [EDIT] Oh look, someone said it already. Damnable second page! |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 05:46 PM | I just think this is what D&D is all about. Creating something new and unique. |
| DarkNick01-25-07, 05:47 PM | Can anyone brainstorm a few weapons a gelatinous cube may have or how it would be able to speak? Maybe it could communicate through morse code, just sort of make rythmic slapping noises on the ground. Oh..what if the cube was a psionist that controls another creature to act as it's voice? I can see a cube riding a war chariot with spiked wheels :D p.s. Your a legend Rogue...well done. :gel: |
| Reversefigure401-25-07, 05:48 PM | Can anyone brainstorm a few weapons a gelatinous cube may have or how it would be able to speak? Be a 17th level monk. They can speak with anything! Have it duel-wield Greataxes - but ignore the TWF tree, Cubes don't have feats to spare. Put all your skill points into Perform: Interpretive Dance, and wear a Hat of Disguise that makes you look like a Jello Pudding Pop so you can fit in comfortably in towns. |

| The_Rogue01-25-07, 05:51 PM | I was thinking about making a new class or using the savage species class instead |
| pukunui01-25-07, 05:59 PM | I was thinking about making a new class or using the savage species class instead You mean the gelatinous template from Savage Species? |
| Nytmare01-25-07, 06:00 PM | Make sure you team up with the Timberrogue and Tleilaxu's mind switched sandwich, cause otherwise your party is going to SUCK. |
| neilthrun01-25-07, 06:05 PM | Okay, I'm really not sure if I should take the OP seriously on any of this, but hes not the only that has wanted to play a gelatinous cube. Check this link (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=547552), its to a template I made, one of the examples uses a gelatinous cube telepath. |
| Animae_Draconum01-25-07, 06:08 PM | The Gelatinous Cube is clearly a bardic race intended for Perform: Jiggle. As for other rules from the SRD on playing them... Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, polymorph, stunning, gaze attacks, visual effects, illusions, and other attack forms that rely on sight, mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects), critical hits, and flanking Blindsense Mindless 3/4 BAB 3d10 Racial Hit Dice no good saving throw Proficient with no armor and only natural weapons A_D |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 06:10 PM | The 193hp is a bit much |
| Nytmare01-25-07, 06:12 PM | The 193hp is a bit much You are 100% correct. |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 06:15 PM | Can anyone think of a better hp? |
| allenchan01-25-07, 06:16 PM | Do you know what "Hit Dice" are? And "Constitution Modifier" ? |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 06:31 PM | Gelatinous Cubes really dont have a problem when it comes to carrying capacity |
| Xavon01-25-07, 08:41 PM | I think a telepathic gelatinous cube would be pretty boring. 'I square. Oooh, meat.' Now a telekinetic gel cube, now that would be scary. It can pull you in and suppress fire... |
| The_Rogue01-25-07, 09:06 PM | Has anyone ever played a game where a pc was a Gelatinous Cube? Continue to add your ideas! |
| lucifer77701-25-07, 09:42 PM | I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but what about the gelatinous template in Savage Species? I think it can be applied to anything or something like that. |
| Allthegoodnamesweretaken01-25-07, 10:10 PM | I'm pretty sure I've seen an Awaken Ooze spell somewhere before, That'd make a gelatinous cube fairly playable if you can get over the lack of any real anatomy to speak of. |
| yrogerg01-25-07, 10:35 PM | So...If they dont have any intelligence then how do they move, attack, or do anything? They can be pretty dangerous enemies. It's not that they have zero Int, and are unconscious, it's that they have no Int score at all, and are mindless. It's a non-ability. It means they're immune to mind-affecting effects, automatically fail Int checks, and can't gain skills or feats, beyond any racial feats they have. It's like how constructs and undead have no Con score. It's not that they're dead (the consequence of a Con score of 0), and follow the rules for dead creatures, it's that they don't have a Con score, and are simply non-living. Also, FYI, Dex and Strength scores are necessary to move around and attack, but mental abilities aren't, necessarily. Technically, traps and the like could be termed as having Dex and Strength scores, but not Int, Cha, or Con. In essence, you're confusing Nonabilities (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#nonabilities) with Ability Scores of Zero (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#abilityScoreLoss). The SRD also has the GC's (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/ooze.htm#gelatinousCube) stats. Honestly, though, this is a terrible idea. There's the fact that the GC's mindless, the fact that it's tailored specifically to dungeon encounters in 10'-wide corridors, the fact that it has massive strengths coupled with massive vulnerabilities (good design for "puzzle monsters", but terrible design for playable characters), and the fact that the only possible way to rewrite the monster until it would be remotely playable as a character race would break the entire flavor of the monster and involve eliminating half the mechanics, and given what you'd be left with, you'd really be better off trying to create an "ooze-like" PC race from scratch, instead. So, just don't do it. Really. |
| Dm_Farble01-25-07, 11:31 PM | Playing an ooze would be moderatly stupid. You would probably end up eating your teamates. However, there is a prestige class in Masters of the Wild that would be similar to what you are talking about. It's called an Oozemaster, and its a really fun prestige class. Im sorry if the other people have already mentioned it so... Anyhow, yeah ooze= stupid (in more ways than one), ozzmaster= awesome. |
| Nytmare01-25-07, 11:40 PM | ozzmaster= awesome. I never watched that show, cause I don't get HBO. |
| Azar01-25-07, 11:41 PM | This reminds me of a Planescape-ish campaign I was in once: one of my friends played an ooze barber - and yes, it was awesome! :D The Awaken Ooze spell from Dragon 304 would give us the following race: Awakened Gelatinous Oozes as Characters Awakened gelatinous ooze characters possess the following racial traits. - +16 Con, -10 Dex - Huge size. -2 penalty to Armor Class, -1 penalty on attack rolls, - 12 penalty on Hide checks, +12 bonus on grapple checks, lifting and carrying limits quadruple those of Medium characters. - Space/Reach: 15 feet/10 feet. - An awakened gelatinous cube's base land speed is 15 feet. - Blindsight: Awakened gelatinous cubes are aware of everything within 60 feet. - Racial Hit Dice: An awakened gelatinous cube begins with four levels of aberration, which provide 4d8 Hit Dice, a base attack bonus of +3, and base saving throw bonuses of Fort +1, Ref +1, and Will +4. - Racial Skills: An awakened gelatinous cube's aberration levels give it skill points equal to 7 x (2+ Int modifier). Its class skills are Climb, Hide, Move Silently, and Perform. - Racial Feats: An awakened gelatinous cube's aberration levels give it two feats. - Natural Weapons: Slam (1d6) - Ooze-like Traits: Blind, with immunity to gaze attacks, visual effects, illusions, and other forms that rely on sight. Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, polymorph, and stunning. Not subject to critical hits or flanking. An awakened gelatinous cube must eat and breath, but it does not have to sleep (Though it still must have 8 hours of uninterrupted rest in order to regain spells). - Immune to electricity. - Corrosion: An awakened gelatinous cube's very touch begins to melt any unattended object that remains in contact with it for one full round. This damage is equal to 12 + the character's Con modifier. - Acid: An awakened gelatinous cube's natural attacks deal +1d6 points of acid damage. - Engulf: As detailed on pg. 202 of the Monster Manual - Paralysis: As detailed on pg. 202 of the Monster Manual - Transparent: As detailed on pg. 202 of the Monster Manual - Automatic Languages: Common. Bonus Languages: Under-Common, Dwarven, and Gnomish. - Level Adjustment: +4. Note: these stats were made with great haste and, as such, the LA is probably way out there. My apologies~ |
| The_Rogue01-26-07, 08:48 AM | Again GCs (if corrected) could make an awesome player. Using these stats as a guide you could perfect them and make an enjoyable char. Please countinue to post your comments |

| Regular_K01-27-07, 11:50 PM | So...If they dont have any intelligence then how do they move, attack, or do anything? They can be pretty dangerous enemies. Not having an intelligence is different from having a 0. Not having one means it moves without thought and only feeds to live. It's like undead and not having a Con score, which is different from having one of 0. |

| Whisper_Swiftblade01-28-07, 03:59 PM | well we can try to make it smart with magic, or maybe templates, half-dragons give you +2 int right? that only leaves one point of int to go. |
| yrogerg01-28-07, 04:09 PM | well we can try to make it smart with magic, or maybe templates, half-dragons give you +2 int right? that only leaves one point of int to go. I actually have my doubts about this; what happens of you cast Bear's Endurance on a Skeleton? Does it get a Con score? What about a Vampire with Dragon Disciple levels? |
| Tyler Do'Urden01-28-07, 04:45 PM | I'm interested in making a Gelatinous Cube characther. You're all fired. I'm calling security. |
| Dm_Farble01-28-07, 05:04 PM | God there would be some interesting characters sludging around if oozes were pcs. I mean, think about it. A lvl 20 rouge10/assasain10 ooze drops from the ceiling and lands on your ally. You still cant see it. All you can see is your friend being dissolved by some unkown force. Then you see your ally sliding towards you, you feel somethign attatching itself to your arm. You feel a strange combination of acid and poison seeping into your blood. IT STARTS SUCKING YOU IN! I think i'll use that for my parties next bbeg... With an npc accompanist that gets killed :D |
| Gideon_Gideonson01-28-07, 05:14 PM | I'd think they would be medium sized. (Using the graphic in the PHB of course) Also G-Cubes should get a +12 hide for being translucent and all. Okay...now you're trolling. They wouldn't be medium sized. It's EATING medium creatures. See the text? It says size LARGE. It mentions nothing about a +12 to hide. NOTHING. You're not even on track with your original post anymore. This needs to stop. You want a medium sized PC cube-shaped ooze race with +12 to hide? Good. Go make it. But personally, I'd recommend a Troll with the Gelatinous template. Maybe with intelligence of 2, or 1, or -. It seems to fit very well. |
| High Octane01-28-07, 06:14 PM | Gelatinous Cubes are large sized. Size of message highly disproportional to the amount quoted. Something to think about next time. |
| Thomar_of_Uointer01-28-07, 06:51 PM | You could use an existing ooze race and simply call it a cube. Let's see... There's a few in the Races Compendium on the Races board. I would recommend asking around on the Races board anyways. |
| pukunui01-29-07, 04:46 AM | I can't believe people are still taking this thread seriously ... and not only that, but they're repeating suggestions/comments that have already been covered. |
| StarFyre01-29-07, 08:04 AM | Just a comment; you mentioned the Cube would be fun if it was "corrected"? There is NOTHING wrong with it..but some races are not meant to be characters.Yes, you CAN Make rules for it..but it would no longer be a GC as you would remove all the rules for it that make sense for it to have. If you play it properlly, you will just move around, in any direction eating stuff. That's it. Now, roleplaying that....anyone can do.... Like others have said, I have an idea for you. Ever see DS9? Why not make an enhanced doppleganger like Odo? That would probably do what you want and be more functional. Sanjay |
| runestar01-29-07, 09:17 AM | One way of seeing it would that it could make for a viable PC, just that no one has thought of how to play one properly yet. I know, its a psychological trick, but still...:P |
| darkdragonk01-29-07, 10:01 AM | 1. Why would you ever want to be a mentally retarded lump of jello 2. What kind of respectable DM would let you play a Mentally retarded jello lump 3. This is not beastality its stupid |
| Thomar_of_Uointer01-29-07, 11:40 AM | One way of seeing it would that it could make for a viable PC, just that no one has thought of how to play one properly yet. I know, its a psychological trick, but still...:P Heh. Yeah, but we'd rather not offend anyone who happened to be serious. Gelatinous cube monk, with its flurry of... edges! Still, I have toyed around with the idea of an ooze race. The level adjustment is unavoidable, but the abilities are very interesting. |
| ImmortalBlueMage01-29-07, 06:01 PM | Could someone please send up a Gnomish Giant Slayer to deal with this troll? |
| sparticus_eleisum01-29-07, 06:28 PM | Could someone please send up a Gnomish Giant Slayer to deal with this troll? Why not just the good old Nebin? http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/spellcomp_gallery/92180.jpg |
| Dm_Farble01-29-07, 06:41 PM | Its truly amazing that people are STILL posting on this thread. I mean seriously, how many insults to the guy could there be? I say just leave him and his jello alone. |
| Dracomortis01-29-07, 06:48 PM | Look, if it will end the incessant trolling, I'll stat up a playable ooze in a few days. |
| Sylvaroth01-29-07, 07:27 PM | People, seriously! Why are you being all negative on rogue? :D Just take the time and think about it for one moment, I think the gelatinous cube would be a valid replacement for the half-races. Only problem a party with a GC PC (:D) would have is, they'd have to set up guards not only for approaching encounters, but also to keep an eye out for the GC not to devour their equipment..or the party :) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/Farzul/OotS.jpg And I think they'd make for great barbarians. |
| roninwolf10901-30-07, 09:17 AM | Is it a bad thing that the very idea of this makes me want to smack somebody? Playable Dungeon Cleaning Crew... Yep...I do believe I'd find it hard not to smack one of my players for asking me if they could do that..either that or just pull out my hair in horrible bloody clumps... |
| moogleman5802-03-07, 12:54 AM | What about the Awakened GC Smiling Corbin in PHBII? |
| Daydreamer02-03-07, 02:34 AM | I believe this is a work of sarcasm. I would personally pk any gelantious cube pcs for xp. |
| Dracomortis02-06-07, 07:16 PM | Voila. A playable race that can transform into a mini-cube. Gelume Gelume, 1st-Level Warrior Medium Humanoid (gelume, shapechanger) Hit Dice: 1d8+5 (9 hp) Initiative: –1 Speed: 30 ft. (6 squares) Armor Class: 10 (–1 Dex, +1 padded armor), touch 9, flat-footed 10 Base Attack/Grapple: +1/+2 Attack: Slam +2 melee (1d6+1) or short sword +2 melee (1d6+1) Full Attack: 2 slams +2 melee (1d6+1) or short sword +2 melee (1d6+1) Space/Reach: 5 ft./5 ft. Special Attacks: Engulf Special Qualities: Darkvision 60 ft., gelatinous cube form, low-light vision, transparent body Saves: Fort +4, Ref –1, Will –1 Abilities: Str 13, Dex 9, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 9, Cha 8 Skills: Climb +3, Hide +7, Listen +1 Feats: Toughness Environment: Any land and underground Organization: Solitary, pair, gel (3–4), slime (4–8), or mass (12–18) Challenge Rating: 1 Treasure: Standard Alignment: Always true neutral Advancement: By character class Level Adjustment: +0 This strange, see-through creature is vaguely humanoid in shape but seems to be made of some sort of liquid-like substance. Gelumes are alien creatures in the extreme. Their bodies, although roughly humanoid in size and shape, are covered in a tough, transparent blue membrane covered in a thick slime that lingers on anything they happen to come into contact with. This slime helps to insulate their bodies from the outside temperature and prevent moisture from leaving their skin. Inside this translucent flesh, bizarre organs and tissues of deep violet and crimson can be seen slowly floating in the gel that makes up their innards. Although not true oozes, gelumes share many of their unusual traits and can even assume the form of a gelatinous cube. It is thought that this serves as a defense mechanism, as it has been gathered from various sources that gelume cities, in whatever strange world they exist in, are constantly threatened by the creatures. Although the mucous covering their bodies feels unpleasant to most other creatures, it is not acidic like that of true oozes and is actually quite nutritious if ingested, albeit a little hard to stomach. Their organs, while different looking from those of more common races, serve a very similar function and are found in more or less the same locations as those of a human, with one exception: their central nervous system is a large purple nucleus about six inches in diameter that rests within their chest, rather than their head, which is reserved solely for the gelume’s highly developed sensory organs. Gelume society remains an enigma to outsiders. Although most gelumes are sociable enough creatures, they rarely talk about their pasts and never reveal anything about what they are or where they come from. Because gelumes seem impervious to negative emotions like greed, despair, anger, or jealousy, some scholars speculate that the gelumes live in utopian societies far more advanced than those of the so-called “civilized” races like humans or elves. While gelumes do seem to have a noticeably better understanding of emotions than other races, it is difficult to gauge the full extent of their knowledge, as they offer it only when needed and rarely allow others to know their own feelings. Combat Gelumes don’t relish combat, but neither do they shy away from it. They prefer manufactured weapons in their humanoid form, but usually shift to their cube form and use their engulf ability if faced with small creatures or if they are outnumbered. Engulf (Ex): While in cube form, a gelume can engulf Small or smaller creatures as a standard action. It cannot make a slam attack during a round in which it engulfs. The gelume merely has to move over the opponents, affecting as many as it can cover. Opponents can make attacks of opportunity against the gelume, but if they do so they are not entitled to a saving throw. Those who do not attempt attacks of opportunity must succeed on a DC 11 Reflex save or be engulfed; on a successful save, they are pushed back or aside (opponent’s choice) as the gelume moves forward. Engulfed creatures are considered to be grappled and trapped within its body. The save DC is Strength-based. Gelatinous Cube Form (Ex): As a full-round action, a gelume can reform its body into a perfect 5-foot cube, resembling nothing so much as a Medium gelatinous cube. While in cube form, a gelume loses its ability to wield weapons or wear armor, which are dropped during the transformation, but gains the use of an engulf attack (see above). It can remain in this form indefinitely, returning to its standard form at any time as a full-round action. Transparent Body (Ex): Gelumes are slightly transparent and hard to see even under ideal conditions, granting them a +4 racial bonus on Hide checks. In addition, a gelume always treats Hide as a class skill. Gelumes as Characters Most gelumes are monks. Calm, collected, and disciplined, gelumes make perfect candidates for the rigorous training necessary to become a master of the martial arts. Fighters are also fairly common. Gelumes of any other class are virtually unheard of, although there is the occasional wizard, rogue, or sorcerer among them. Gelume religion, if it exists, is extremely obscure and has no known deity, leaving little need for clerics. Druids, rangers, bards, and paladins are likewise foreign concepts to the gelumes, and although the barbarian possesses great strength, gelumes are far too reserved to lose themselves to mindless rage. Gelume characters possess the following racial traits. — –2 Dex, +2 Con. A gelume’s morphic body grants it superior endurance, but slightly hinders its movements and reduces its flexibility. —Medium size. —A gelume’s base land speed is 30 feet. —Darkvision out to 60 feet. —Special Attacks (see above): Engulf. —Special Qualities (see above): Gelatinous cube form, transparent body. —Automatic Languages: Common. Bonus Languages: Any. —Favored Class: Monk. —Level Adjustment: +0. The gelume warrior presented here had the following ability scores before racial adjustments: Str 13, Dex 11, Con 12, Int 10, Wis 9, Cha 8. |
