12-17-03, 12:34 AM I am new to the 3.5 rules and have several questions regarding character creation and prestige classes

Okay, I have a human fighter and gain enough experience to earn 6th level. I take a prestige class and advance to 10th level in that. When I earn enough experience to advance to 17th character level do I advance to 7th level fighter or do I take 11th level in my prestige class per Epic level hand book?

12-17-03, 01:10 AM Fighter. A PrC can't go past 10th level unless it's taking you over level 20. So you can be PrC11/<Other>10, but not PrC11/<Other><less than 10>.

12-18-03, 09:25 AM Think of prestige classes as any other class. They have a few differences: requirements, level limits, and no XP penalty, but other than that you treat them as any other class.

So to answer your question, when you hit level 17, you will have maxed out your prestige class and now must find three more levels of which ever class(es) you want. When you hit level 21, you can go back to your prestige class and take epic levels in it if there are any.

Remember that when you hit epic levels you cannot take epic levels in a class until you have taken all the non-epic levels of that class. So you will be able to take epic prestige class but not epic fighter until you have taken 20 levels of fighter. This may be important as you plan your character's advancement.

one more question can you switch back and forth between prestige class and your original class or take another class unless other wise specified within the prestige class?

12-18-03, 09:48 AM Unless otherwise specified (like in monk's or paladin's description), you can take any class you want each level.

So you can go for example:

Ftr, Ftr, Ftr, Ftr, Ftr, Ftr, Blk, Ftr, Blk, Blk, Rog, Ftr, Blk, Blk, Rog, Ftr, Blk ...
