Since the character I had in my group's gestalt game died from a brick (long story). I have to make a new one, so I wanted to come up with a cool assassin-type character.

I was wondering whether I should go with a spell caster and a rogue or maybe a warblade with the rogue.

Opinions?

Asassin/monk. It doesn't matter if they strip you of your knives and poisons if your fists are lethal weapons! Muahahaha!
Actually, that's a pretty good idea.

Anyways, an assassin/illusionst would do very well. You can use death attack in a solo fight, since you can use shadow conjuration to drop a few monsters to help you flank (or just use the actual summon monster spell if you don't restrict Conjuration). I would recommend looking at Complete Adventurer, it has a lot of neat spells for sneaky types, many of which are lower-level versions of spells that can be cast as a swift action for a duration of one round. Greater invisibility is also a tried-and-true tactic.

Swordblade (Specializing in Shadow Hand) and Rogue. Then Assassin, and if you have some levels left over, Shadow Sun Ninja.

A rogue//wizard or ninja//wizard would not only a good stealth fighter and spellcaster, but a good skill monkey to boot. The ninja//wizard gets the advantage of adding his Wis bonus to AC while unarmored. A swordsage//wizard still gets good skills, can get his Wis bonus to AC in twilighted light armor, and a whole bunch of mystical abilities. You wouldn't have Sneak Attack or even Sudden Strike, but you'd be a bit more durable in melee and could pick up a whole bunch of Shadow Hand maneuvers. I keep suggesting wizard because a high Int goes so well with a good skill selection, and becase arcane spellcasting is so versatile.

Cleric// Ninja. With the silent spell feat, you can cast silence on yourself, then ghost step. Making silenced Inflict Moderate Wounds touch attacks with your sudden strike bonus could be all sorts of fun. Both benefit from high wisdom, and with a focus on touch attacks for damage and no need for armor, you have no need to pump your strength. Death Knell would be useful for bonuses when killing someone in a larger battle. Shatter for the pesky tank waving a sword at you.

You could heal, dissapear, jump around and climb like a monkey, and cast spells to disable and confound your opponent. The cleric spell list doesn't have the same buffs as the wizards list, but it would work for an assassin. Obscuring Mist is on the list. A few scrolls of that would allow you to get away in a hurry when your Ghost Step abilities run out. Bulls Strength and Bears Endurance for buffs. Blindness to remove that Dex bonus to an opponent so you can sudden strike him. Best of all, you are no longer are useless against undead.

I personally like the idea of a Swordsage//Fighter (UA variant with Sneak Attack).

Full BAB
d10 HD
Simple and Martial Weapon Proficiency
6+ skill points/level
Martial maneuvers
Sneak Attack as a Rogue of equal level

With this combination you can be both a sneaky backstabber and a competent warrior.
Possible prestige classes could be Assassin, Ghost-Faced Killer, or Streetfighter, for example.

Oops. That's what I meant. Confused with my brother's very similar BladeSage Class.

I like this too.
