Getting rid of the Taint? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I play in a campaign where we switch DM's after every quest/adventure. The current DM is a fan of the Oriental setting and as such we've been encountering samurai's, monks and all sorts of nice oriental monsters. While this is rather fun, because for once we don't recognize every monster on sight, it has also brought something new into the game.

After fighter a group of Mamono (sort of doppelganger creature) my character (the priest) failed a fort save and is now infected with the taint. My taint score was raised by 1, so now it's 1, effectively lowering my constitution and wisdom by 1, though it appears our DM isn't using this because he never mentioned it to me (allowed me to keep hp hps and spells which should have both been less)

The big question is (and I hope someone has the Knowledge (Oriental) to answer it) how do I get rid of this taint. I've done some reading myself and spells like heal, remove dessease and remove curse don't work. Neither would wish or miracle (not that we can cast either of those).

The only thing I've found is a lvl 9 shugenja spell which would cost me 1 level. Seeing as we got thrown into this by the DM without any knowledge of the taint I find this rather harsh. Does anyone have other suggestions?

Thanks in advance

If he isn't enforcing penalties, then you can live with the taint a lot better than you can live with -1 level.

Not if the taint is anything like it was in the Original AEG source (Rokugan). Don't listen to posters ignorant of the setting.

You have taint, which whether the mechanical implications are enforced, you have to worry about the social implications.
Some of the Rokugani Society rules on taint
1) If you have taint you must report it to the authorities.
2) The Authorities can take the actions they deem appopriate to keep the taint from spreading. This includes asking you to commit Seppukku or ordering your execution if they have reason to believe you won't commit Seppukku when asked.
3) Hiding the taint in an automatic executable offense.

Even if you can somehow get Raised (not necessarily possible in Rokugan setting) you will still lose a level. A problem with the Taint is it is cumulative. Every time you gain taint it is more or less permanent, and eventually you will get hit with the negative aspects.

I'm pretty sure they're not actually _in_ Rokugan.

And making it so Wish and Miracle can't remove it was just silly of the game designers.

Taint is a Rokugani effect. Without the society OR any mechanical penalty for taint, it is senseless to include. The AEG dsigners made Wish/Miracle incapable of removing taint because in the original setting (Lo5R) NOTHING could be done about taint. Once your character got tainted, they were permanently tainted.

Wow. That's pretty darn harsh. Of course, Oriental mythology is like that I guess.

I'd guess a Diety could help you, but meeting one in the flesh (or whatever outsiders have) is rather hard. You probably can't afford Gate either.

Get someone to cast Plane Shift, to the Upper Planes. Go on a quest for a celestial paragon to get rid of it.

I could cast plane shift myself. I'm level 12 after all. I could probably also afford to have someone cast gate for me, but then I'm faced with finding someone who can cast it for me.

And indeed, we're not actually Rokugan. Just an asian based empire very similar to Rokugan in customs and traditions, but not lay-out of the land or NPC's.

Would be a shame to have to kill my own char though, I'm the only priest in the group and I've allready said that should I die, I won't be priest again.

Guess I'm stuck till next monday before I can do anything. Allready told the DM I'd be doing some research on the Mamono so it might result in my character actuall yknowing he's been tainted. Then it's a matter of visiting a shugenja (sp?) and seeing what he can tell me.

Thanks for the help so far.

If you need to have it removed, then try a quest for some high-level shugenja or whoever can remove it. It sounds like a great plot hook for your DM to use.

*"Current DM" enters discussion* :fight!:

I didn't know you took skill-focus "jumping to conclusions" for your next level...
;)

ge of the taint I find this rather harsh.

In-game you don't even know what's wrong with you.
You know it is the taint because of what i said after the playing-session.
So you haven't had any chance to do any in-game research.
You are not from the oriental region so why should you have knowledge of the taint?
(We are not playing Rokugan, i just use some of it)

I must say this thread brought a big smile to my face :D

Ack, busted by my own DM. The PAIN!
True I've not had an in-game chance to investigate, but I thought it would be nice to do some OOC investigations. Though they have proven rather fruitless, beside some advice to either "go with the (tainted) flow" and become evil or take the chance to roleplay a slightly evil, insane priest who would lose his exhalted feats :(

Guess tonights game will tell me what it is to be.

Well, yesterday I finally got rid of the taint, though it a somewhat extreme way: My char left the group to figth for the survival of the gods.

He even took upon him the taint from 3 other PCs (and grew horns!) but thanks to spells like remove disease/curse and heal he'll be able to keep his taint score low.

True, he's still not rid of the taint, but we don't have to worry about it anymore. Which is especially handy seeing as we rotate DMs and yesterday the current DM rounded up his adventure and next week a new DM will start his (very non OA-)campaign.

But thank you all for the advice and everything.
