I am fairly new to D&D (on my first campaign and first character) I have a 5th level Sorcerer and I'm looking at which prestige classes I like, what 3rd and 4th level spells I want, what weapons I need to get etc.

Now my character has been nicknamed "louie the rune soldier" if that means anything to any of you. For you non-anime fanatics then it means I haven't killed anything bigger than a goblin or skeleton with my magic, however I have taken down a dire rat ogre in combat single handily...

No matter how much I try my magic just wont pull through for me. But when I hit things they just die... (which I'm not complaining about too much:rolleyes:)

What direction would you suggest my character goes for

I cant see any prestige classes I like (spell sword and rage mage have been suggested), can't really see any weapons that would improve much on my current MWK Heavy mace that is in a realistic price range.

(I'm in Ptolus if that helps)

Well giving a list of your current spells could help us understand your plight :D .
There are many good PrCs a sorcerer could qualify for, what books do you have available to you?

Spells really depend on your party, character concept, and books available.

As for weapons, don't waste money on any weapons for a sorcerer. Get the biggest cloak of charisma money can buy! That and several small stacking bonuses to AC of course.

If you can give me those lists I'd be more then happy to give my advice on the subject. If not I could offer general advice, but I think the former would be more helpful.

Like I said I'm in Ptolus, seeing as hitting things with spells like burning blade and mage amour work well, I would like to keep with the combat backed up with magic philosophy.

Spells of note (AKA ones I have actually found a practical use for) are:

Detect magic, Ray of frost & acid splash.

Magic Missile

Scorching ray & Burning blade.

I have many more spells but haven't really used any of them. I know I have Assess creature but haven't ever needed to use it.

The books I currently have are the 3.0 core books and the dragonomican.

I want to get a few more, mainly complete arcane or complete sorcerer.

Are you trying to be a Gish(Fighter/Mage)?

I use 3.5 but they are close enough for picking spells.

Off the top of my head 3.0 spells that were good, darkness and haste, each got nerfed in 3.5. Darkness is one you may or may not find useful depending on your party.

I understand detect magic and acid splash, but ray of frost?

Spells you might want to pick up: Enlarge person, grease,Protection from x, glitter dust, mirror image, invisibility, alter self, levitate, fireball(its a classic), protection from energy, hold person, displacement, blink, fly, greater magic weapon, slow,Dispel magic, dimension door, evards black tentacles, charm monster, wall of ice, invisibility greater, enervation, polymorph.

These spells are general enough for just about any sorcerer to take and all of them are pretty good. The thing with a sorcerer is you have the capacity to fill many different roles with even their limited spell selection. So if you take a very general spell list you should do fine. The important thing with a sorcerer is never specialize! They aren't wizards and don't have a big enough selection to make pure specialization work.

I agree that over specialization is a bad idea for a sorceror, but I would recomend dedicating several of your spell slots to illusions. Illusions are disturbingly versitile if you have a decent imagination. The rest of your slots should be utility and damage spells. As to your magical uselessness, is it a matter of low spell DCs?

I wasn't trying to be a Gish, but it seems to be working so I was thinking of going with it.

I sometimes just take level 0 spells that are useful for role playing, ray of frost came in handy when one of the party members decided that he would lick the construct (don't ask why)... It took him 25 minutes to unstick his tongue. :D Also good for chilling the party's drinks all at once (cause we are too cheap to go to a descent inn that serves cold drink), freezing metal to peoples skin and making people slip over in puddles when you freeze it under them etc.

I guess that illusions would be useful, never really thought about it before but they could be fun!

I only use 3.0 because there is little difference and I just cant afford 3 new books for 3.5 and all the other books I want.
