+X Twilight Mithral Chain Shirt

It'll run you a good couple thousand GP, but for that you'll have armor with 5 (or more) AC, and zero arcane spell failure.

Twilight, by the way, is available in the BoED. I just reduces ASF by 10% for a +1 equivalent modifier.

If you want eve more AC, you can snatch up a +X Mithral Twilight Large Shield too. 3 (or more) shield AC, and again, zero ASF.

An amulet of health or belt of dwarvenkind. A tan bag of tricks (sounds silly, but they can be very useful). A cloak of charisma. A handy haversack.

Greater Mage Armor is better than that Chain Shirt. When it comes to shields, a simple Mithral Buckler (no magic) gives the same +3 shield bonus to AC when enhanced by a cleric. Also, don't forget the awesomeness of Alter Self into a Troglodyte. +6 natural armor bonus to AC. Thats AC 25 right there, and if someone's using Haste every battle (like someone should be) then thats an easy 26 before your Dex kicks in. Other items to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to AC are here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/tt/20050321a). Just ignore the enhancement entries on the table, since your Armor and Shield are taken care of.
