| Disposablehero01-07-08, 05:25 PM | I am in a greyhawk campaign, and I am playing the cleric. I've played straight up good characters in shining armor, but I am trying to play a bit different this time. I still want to be a 'good' priest, but something a bit darker. Is there any dieties that are orriented around death, without being evil. The idea of my priest dealt with the reverence of death. Guiding spirits on to the next life, and protecting spirits as they pass on. This would also deal with vanquishing undeath. The dead should pass on, not dwell on our plane beyond their time. Any ideas of a diety that might go with this concept? |

Though she is a relatively benign death goddess, she has no problem with undead being created - as long as they are not reanimated against their will, and their remains are procured in a lawful manner. Wee Jas is unconcerned with questions of morality; if it can be done within the confines of the law, she will allow it. Wee Jas is especially popular with Suel wizards and sorcerers. As a death goddess, more people look to her for safe passage into the afterlife than harsher deities like Nerull. She is also honored by those involved with upholding and interpreting laws (judges, magistrates, justiciars, etc.), and is sometimes even revered as a love goddess. |
| Disposablehero01-07-08, 05:32 PM | The thing is, Wee Jas leans towards Lawful Evil. How would a Good cleric work with that? |
| Mindolin01-07-08, 06:09 PM | Wee Jas is Lawful Neutral, meaning that she can have Lawful Good worshippers, and what you are describing is more a particular cleric's path than one mandated by their god. Perhaps have that as the ideal of a cult within the church of Wee Jas. |
| Endarrion01-07-08, 06:34 PM | Osiris is Lawful Good and grants the Repose domain which is almost exactly like the Death domain and even has the same granted power, but is for clerics who can't (or might not want to) cast evil spells. Osiris is in the Deities and Demigods book. |
| The_Shaman01-07-08, 06:48 PM | Osiris would probably be the natural choice - the Repose domain is practically the death domain without some of the "evil" spells. Apart from that, I don't know... Sehanine Moonbow is kind of like the elven death goddess, but she iirc doesn't have repose/death as her domain. |
| Kouk01-07-08, 06:53 PM | I don't know that much about Greyhawk specifically, but if there are still racial pantheons, you might look into Elven, Halfling, Dwarven or other pantheons to find a god/goddess which fits. In the Forgotten Realms, the god Kelemvor is the Human god in charge of death, but he hates Undead and encourages his followers to destroy them (they go against "natural" death or somesuch). Otherwise you certainly could be a follower of Wee Jas if she is LN, even though she is pretty much OK with creating Undead, you may be a part of a sect of her worshipers who believe that she is actually opposed to Undead and you seek to perform "her wishes" by destroying them. I doubt she would try to stop such a rogue sect anyway -- worshipers are worshipers... |
| The_Shaman01-07-08, 07:10 PM | I doubt she would try to stop such a rogue sect anyway -- worshipers are worshipers... Yeah, but some of her worshippers tend to be, well, undead - liches and the like - and these tend to be among the more powerful worshippers. |
| Kouk01-07-08, 11:37 PM | Yeah, but some of her worshippers tend to be, well, undead - liches and the like - and these tend to be among the more powerful worshippers. Yes... All the better reason for the DM to allow it... |
| kuonji01-08-08, 02:06 AM | I too would recommend Wee Jas. |
| Avatar of Kokusho01-08-08, 10:29 AM | I recommend Kelemvor, from Forgotten Realms. He is the god of the dead, yet hates undead...he offers the Repose domain, which is almost identical to the Death domain except for name. I believe the granted power is the same, as well. |
