Soooo... Are they saying that you should just kill someone for no reason once in a while?
Seriously, I would need more information as to how an "evil world" works. What is expected of the average person? Is everyone trying to kill or rob everyone else? This isn't a society in any sense of the word, it's the jungle, the strong survive, and you four have the advantage since you can work as a team.
How does the world work?

If I'm reading this right, essentially all the bad guys have taken over the world and 'good' is illegal and evil is allowed.

Just make the characters Neutral on the Good-Evil axis, 'cause that's where you're liable to wind up anyway just from your inability to take action against evil in a lot of cases.

BTW, congratulations to your group for nobody being insane enough to try a Paladin in this world.

If your Cleric is a cleric of a good deity, he's going to radiate a good aura, though. That's going to be a problem.

Just avoid temples of Hextor/Nerull/whoever, and the larger cities. Try building a refuge for yourselves out in the wilderness, and only venture into civilization when you want to buy supplies/magic items. Maybe once you're high enough level, you can found some good-aligned communities. (I assume the average person in this setting isn't evil, just the ones in power.)

Well depending on how the world works your style of play will vary. If every person on the plane from Lord High PooBah to Gutter Wretch is evil there's really not much your party can do. Attempting to convert an entire plane is foolhardy with only four and frankly you'd be better off letting the wizard study in peace for a few years until he can open a portal to a nice and sunny plane with long beaches and coconut drinks with little umbrellas and let you all retire from this adventuring lark.

If on the other hand only the Lord High PooBah is evil you've got a setting for some serious heroics. Start off small, find a little community somewhere isolated being stepped on by someone you can handle. Kick his teeth in, bask in gratitude and bam, instant starting point. Then you can slowly move up the foodchain and by the time you're high level, who knows, you could have established a "Kingdom of Good" in that place. Just make sure you don't bite off more than you can chew. If you're going to kick the local tyrant out make sure he doesn't have a hotline to someone bigger and meaner. The trick will be never seeming enough of a threat to force the evils around you to band together. Instead you want them to keep squabbling and betraying each other until you've built up enough strength to take another step up the ladder and hold onto it.

dei, and shalla have the right idea on how the world works.
we have been told theta all the good gods have been killed or dissappeared, tilting the balence to evil. the rulers are all eveil, the populace is generally nuetral. soem areas are chaotic others are lawfull.
one of our thoughts has been to set up a strong hold , another has been a alter egos approach.

these have been helpfull thanks.

Sounds like Dark Sun, Ravenloft, Midnight, or similar campaign.
Stealth is the key to survival, I guess.

With some areas lawful and some areas chaotic, you've got some possibilities.

First off, in the chaotic areas, most people are probably surviving by force alone, and nobody is likely working together who aren't being forced to work together by someone more powerful. Your group could make for themselves a small island of good, drawing neutrals into your benevolent circle, with chaotic evils, unable to play nice together, generally crashing against you as the sea against the mighty rock.

Or you could go the lawful route: play the lawful-evil's game against them. Do your best to live within the letter of the law, while constantly mocking the (evil) spirit of the law. (1984 (http://www.online-literature.com/orwell/1984/) might provide ideas, I'm thinking, though I haven't gotten far in it yet.) So long as there is no "if you radiate a good aura, you're dead" law, you should be fine. If not, run away to chaos-land.

well...funny story...

This actually happened to me, I was a Ranger/Cleric/Radiant Servant of Pelor, in a world literally infested with undead. Needless to say, the majority of our adventures were spent in the wild and we never really got the ball rolling until 10th level.

if your playing a set up the kingdom, you might want to wait before you start doing so. level five is a nice time to start, level 6 is the prerequisite for leadership, which is very nice. Go read the forum in Redgars Repository on making low level npc's hard, and then do it...

Go to the other worlds boards, and then enter the ravenloft page. Ask there, because they probably have more insite. Just a suggestion, i'm not mad at you for posting on here, because it is a good question, but I'm just saying you might get more posts on the Ravenloft Board.
