| Voldar_Mecorthio07-08-06, 08:01 PM | I am starting a new game, DM says anything goes. Any splatbook, any race, any class. I want to play a monkey ninja. That's right, a monkey ninja. Ninja from Complete Adventurer, monkey from the monster manuel*. According to my story, a druid found me and cast Awaken on me, thus giving me intelegence. I tried to live in a city, but was chased out. I got into a dojo, and thus am a ninja. *It would be a modified monkey. Small size, only a -2 to strength and +2 to dexterity. If you dont want to look up monkey, has a 30ft climb speed, a +4 (reduced from normal +8) to climb and balance, and have low light vision. Aside from the sheer humor of a monkey shooting poisened arrows from a composite longbow, is this a good idea? Is an Awakened monkey a good ninja? If the monkey ninja doesn't work, I will play an Ape Barbarian. Gorilla warfare. Is this a good idea? This isn't exactly the most serious game, we goof off a lot, so I was planning on doing something funny with my character. Hence the monkey/ape. The humor is definitly successful, but is this a good character idea? |
| crow0407-08-06, 08:49 PM | go with the monkey ninja. however, you are here by required to posien a bannana |
| TheChilliGod07-08-06, 08:51 PM | Racial stats for an awakened monkey: -8 str, +4 dex, +2 wis, -6+1d3 cha 2 (Or 3, I don't really know which) racial hit dice. Climb speed. Most likely no LA With a -8 to strength, you will almost never be able to use any sort of Composite Longbow, so screw the 'composite' part. (Don't expect to deal any sort of physical damage with a tiny creature anyway; a longbow for them would likely deal somewhat like 1d4-4 damage) +4 dex and +2 wis go a long way towards improving a ninja's AC, which would then actually be somewhat decent (what, with the added size bonus). A monkey ninja wouldn't, mechanically, be all that bad, once you get around the evilness of racial Hit Dice. However, I would be kind enough to suggest looking at the back few pages of Savage Species, where there are stats for anthropomorphic animals such as monkeys (Ie- human-like animals). The anthropomorphic monkey is a little more evened-out in the stat line, but at the possible cost of looking less cool (It's only half-monkey, after all! :D ). |
| Shaggy_Shaggs07-08-06, 09:01 PM | That reminds me, I need to find a DM ready to put up with Furious George, NE awakened baboon rogue/barbarian/ troublemaker/sociopath/general malcontent. :smirk: |
| Voldar_Mecorthio07-08-06, 09:16 PM | My DM is okay with modifing the monkey, making it small size instead of tiny and reducing the strength penalty from -8 to -2, the dexterity bonus from +4 to +2, lowering the racial bonus on climb and balance checks, and eliminating the racial hit dice, thus creating a character race on par with the halfling, but with a climb speed and less skill bonuses. The monkey idea is mostly flavor. Like I said, this is NOT a serious game, and it would just be hilarous to have a monkey doing ninja stuff. |
| FeceMan07-08-06, 09:44 PM | The pun makes this thread worthwhile. I came in here expecting to post stats on a dire ape, and, lo and behold, the OP knows the difference between 'gorilla' and 'guerrilla'. |
| Rolof07-08-06, 10:01 PM | Well...if your DM is allowing it, "go ape, man". *chuckle* |
| Piggyfreak607-08-06, 10:10 PM | they have animal races in the Savage Species book, if you can find a copy of it. |
| Analysis07-08-06, 10:11 PM | That reminds me, I need to find a DM ready to put up with Furious George, NE awakened baboon rogue/barbarian/ troublemaker/sociopath/general malcontent. For that you deserve an eight-foot bunch of bananas, all spiked with PCP. :D |
| Zillah07-09-06, 12:54 AM | dude be the ape. monkey will get you killed too quickly |
| Lily_Knight07-09-06, 03:41 AM | What are you gonna call your monkey? |
| InterSilva07-09-06, 05:35 AM | I might have to use Furious George as an animal companion's name sometime. That's ingenius. Familiars and ACs are a lot cooler when you use puns for their names. I had a Greyrender cohort once nicknamed "The Incredible Bulk." |
| draco111907-09-06, 05:39 AM | Go with the monkey, but use eithewr a Shortbow or a Blowgun... :D |
| Shaggy_Shaggs07-09-06, 05:57 AM | I wish I could take credit for coming up with the name myself, but the idea actually came from Furious George And the Cross-Country Crime Spree (http://furious-george.net/) (an utterly pointless waste of time, but an amusing way to kill half an hour or so). Careful you don't get addicted. |
| Voldar_Mecorthio07-09-06, 11:43 AM | I changed my mind about the modified monkey, I'll go with straight up monkey, except only -6 to strength rather than -8. I'll be using a shortbow, and since I'm buying a 12 for strength, I'll end up with a 6, -4 penalty. My damage will be 1d3-4, so all my damage will come from sudden strike and one of the elemental damaging magic upgrades. Which isn't too bad I must say. My stratigy for combat will be hide or invisiblize, shoot arrows at people who don't know that I'm there, and later when I can turn etheral I'll get a short sword and cut the heads of people from the etheral plane. Very sneaky. I'll be taking a 1 level dip into shadowdancer for the hide in plain sight ability, and will get a lanturn of darkness so I can make my own shadows to hide in. And if I ever play a ranger or druid, I'm naming the animal companion Furious George. |
| tharivol26607-09-06, 11:56 AM | a 6 is only a -2 modifier and bows don't apply str mod. to damage, good or bad, otherwise it sounds fun. you have to take weapon focus (fecal matter) though. with a sudden strike how great would that be? random NPC witness: "well a piece of #### came flying out of no where and killed him. I've never seen anything like it before." |
| Shaggy_Shaggs07-09-06, 12:00 PM | bows don't apply str mod. to damage, good or bad, otherwise it sounds fun. Incorrect. Shortbow: You need at least two hands to use a bow, regardless of its size. You can use a shortbow while mounted. If you have a penalty for low Strength, apply it to damage rolls when you use a shortbow. If you have a bonus for high Strength, you can apply it to damage rolls when you use a composite shortbow (see below) but not a regular shortbow. |

| bekeleven07-09-06, 05:50 PM | Savage species stats for anthropormorphic monkey (doesn't make sense, but they did all animals, so it had to be included): Small size 1D8 racial die OR can be swapped for class level. LA: +0 Starting ECL: 1 Abilities: Str -4; Dex +2; Wis +4; Cha -2 Natural armor: 0 Favored Class: Druid Speed: 30 The following applies to all anthropomorphic animals: * Monstrous humanoid * Bipedal * Same natural attacks, adjusted for size * Darkvision 60 * Keeps weapon finesse if already had There's more, but the other stuff isn't for monkeys. Enjoy! -BK |
| Voldar_Mecorthio07-09-06, 07:22 PM | Hmm, that savage species monkey looks good. I think I'll use that. Thanks! (and I'll use the name Furious George for my monkey ninja.) |
| nhs_boy07-09-06, 07:24 PM | I wish I could take credit for coming up with the name myself, but the idea actually came from Furious George And the Cross-Country Crime Spree (http://furious-george.net/) (an utterly pointless waste of time, but an amusing way to kill half an hour or so). So. Many. Primate. Jokes. |
| Voldar_Mecorthio07-09-06, 07:31 PM | What exactly are the stats for a blowgun? I don't have Complete Adventurer, I copied the information for the ninja from Amazon's look-at-a-page. |
| Exquisite_Flopilidopilies07-10-06, 12:24 AM | Savage species stats for anthropormorphic monkey (doesn't make sense, but they did all animals, so it had to be included): An anthropomorphic monkey makes perfect sense--get your hands off me, you damn dirty ape! |

So. Many. Primate. Jokes. You gotta respect any card game that puts the card "Fast As Lightning" in with... Hell, you gotta respect a card game that has a card called "Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting"! |
| Azezel07-10-06, 05:03 AM | Steve Jackson Games makes an RPG called 'Monkey, Ninja, Pirate, Robot'. Perhapse you should look into this? |
| Sulaco07-10-06, 10:45 AM | I might have to use Furious George as an animal companion's name sometime. That's ingenius. Almost as ingenious as when Mr. Burns said it on The Simpsons six years ago. |
| Voldar_Mecorthio07-10-06, 10:49 AM | Whatever the origins of Furious George, it's funny and I'll be using it with my monkey ninja. |
| Zaku07-10-06, 05:57 PM | Just have to say....its Guerilla from spanish meaning "little war" Zaku would like to point out that he just understood the joke and apologizes for not being able to delete posts..... |
