| BruteForce10-27-04, 02:14 AM | I'm playing in an Eberron game. We just finished the first "leg" of the campaign and received a fairly cool reward (considering the party is only 7th level at the moment): each of use ended up with a ring containing one wish. The really cool thing is that the DM actually wants this to be a reward; in other words, he's not perverting the meaning or otherwise attempting to screw us with it. He's modifying the spell slightly for these purposes, though (we can't wish for anything more powerful/expensive than a +3 weapon, boosting an ability score will raise it by 2 points instead of 1, and we can wish to spontaneously gain a feat or spell-like ability if we want). He's also willing to entertain more... creative uses if we can come up with anything. So far, I've come up with a few ways to use it: I could use it to, to steal a term from City of Heroes (of which the DM is thankfully an avid player, or he probably wouldn't allow this), "re-spec" my character. That is, re-build him from the ground up, making sure it's obviously the same character. Basically, to revise him a bit. The character is currently a Ranger 4/Psion (Nomad) 1/Extreme Explorer 2 (my plan is to advance Extreme Explorer through 4th level, then switch over to Elocator from XPH). That basically means his fourth ranger level is just sitting there useless. His one measly spell per day hasn't even come up once, and his weak little animal companion has been a non-factor as well. So maybe I'll switch that over to another Psion level. I could also re-distribute ability scores and skill points with a little more focus. (When I created the character, I had no intention of adding psi-powers, but later I found Elocator and it fit so perfectly with my character concept that I just had to try to work it in there.) I could take a feat. The way I see it, there are two decent choices here: First, since the group is without a cleric (and the druid is getting really sick of being the party's healer), I could take Leadership and get me a cleric cohort to act as the group's field medic. Second, since we kinda screwed over one of the major merchant houses during the first part of the campaign, I imagine that when we get back to Sharn, they'll be pretty upset with us (what can I say? The Church of the Silver Flame came to us with a better offer). But I could offset a lot of this by wishing for the Favored in House feat. Problem solved! Of course, since it's stored in a ring, there's nothing forcing me to use this wish right now. I could always just save it for an emergency. But I'm not really that type of person. |

I have one player I DM to that switches his feats every time we get together to play. Like, literally, he'll "decide" that weapon focus in the waraxe wasn't a good idea since he found a greataxe with a higher enchantment after gaining the level, so he'll just switch them. I don't like the idea of it, and I try to avoid letting him do it, but he's one of those *beachy* players that will just pout if it isn't allowed. However, the idea of using a valuable resource like this is an awesome showing of how cool you are as a player more than anything else! I also like that idea of taking the favored of house feat to eliminate your vandettas. Very classy. I wouldn't worry about the "field medic" yet though. Talk to your DM one on one, tell him which ones you're considering, and when he sees you spent your wish to add to the roleplaying dynamic with your rivals, he might just throw ya an NPC cleric as a bonus for making the game advance a step. At least I would. Good luck with it, and congrats on getting a wish spell that isn't going to bite you on the other end. |

Of course, you could save it; I myself have planted such items specifically for future use (Tarrasque?) on more than one occasion (with different groups, so no one has caught on to any trend). The DM may have plans for that Wish. Of course, a pure spellcaster would probably have the spell itself (or Miracle) by the time you actually need it. |

There has been some controversial debate over on the psionic sections of the boards about the power's ballance, but I'm thinking that it is a good basis for your intended use of wish.Psychic Reformation Telepathy [Mind-Affecting] Level: Psion/wilder 4 Display: Auditory, mental, and visual Manifesting Time: 10 minutes Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Target: One creature Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: None Power Resistance: No Power Points: 7, XP; see text When this power is manifested, the subject can choose to spend its most recently gained skill points differently (picking new skills and abandoning old ones if it chooses) and to choose a different feat from the one it selected when advancing from its previous level to its current level. The subject can also choose to forget powers it acquired when advancing to its current level, replacing them with new ones. The subject can undo decisions of these sorts that were made at lower levels, if both the subject and the manifester agree to pay the necessary XP before this power is manifested (see below). The subject must abide by the standard rules for selecting skills and feats, and so it cannot take feats for which it doesn’t qualify or take crossclass skills as class skills. XP Cost: This power costs 50 XP to manifest to reformat choices made when the character reached her current level. For each additional previous level into which the revision reaches, the power costs an additional 50 XP. The manifester and subject split all XP costs evenly. Now, Psychic Reformation won't let you exchange classes, but it is a start. It's also only a 4th level power and wish is a 9th level spell that costs considerably more XP. (Okay, you're character isn't going to pay this, but the principle is the same.) |

| ck2001wendt10-27-04, 03:32 PM | The FEAT! Take the FEAT! Feats are the most precious commodity in D&D. You get 20 Character Levels Pre-Epic and hundreds of skill points, but I don't think you can get 20 feats (or it's a REALLY specific build...like a Fighter/Psychic Warrior). Leadership is an acceptable use of that feat...it's essentially getting a whole extra character...who will have a lot of extra feats. |

| Aluroon10-27-04, 05:16 PM | Wish for the Spellfire ability from FR. Just alittle Min/max here are we? Personally I would wish for something more in line with what the character wants, not something based on what I thing is best for my character's stats... Aluroon |
| Shard of Suzail10-27-04, 09:54 PM | Wish spell, such a powerful and amazing spell, but when we get it, we dont know what to do with it. Wish is such a troublesome spell, it promises a lot but does it deliver? Well, remaking your character is an interesting idea and not one that i would have thought of. If he`ll let you do that, then its probably worth going for. Feats, hmm, feats can be good. I would tend to go for something more unusual. The "get out of jail free" wish is a good option. By that i mean wishing for something like "I wish that, when next i would lose my life, that I be spared". Or perhaps "I wish that, when i am next in dire peril, fortune will smile upon me". Having a generic wish like that running, a bit like a contingency spell, is very handy. More handy than having a plus 3 sword, i would say. You never know when you are next likely to get mangled by a trap, lost, drowned, or pushed off a cliff. |
| kliate10-27-04, 10:16 PM | Save it! One thing my finance courses have taught me, options have value. Very rarely does any resource provide so many options as a Wish spell - so keep your wish until you either need it, or it can be used to benefit from an even greater opportunity. Or, you could just burn the wish and hope that by the time you need one, you'll have a replacement  |
