| Rhuell04-15-06, 02:30 AM | In this campaign I'm in we have some oddballs and some strange beings. Our DM is throwing us up against creatures with a CR of 4+ our current level in an attempt to even things out. In our party we have a half orc barbarian/frenzied berserker, a janni (that's me) and a wild elf sorceress/dragon disciple. I can fly and avoid a great deal of the danger coming our way or planeshift and escape if necessary (hey! I AM Neutral. ;) ), but the rest of our group can't. However, though my PC thinks of himself first and foremost he's not stupid and realizes he will not accomplish his goals alone. I want to hear some tactics that could be used against the monsters we are gonna end up fighting. We are level 7 going on 8th. I have used my fly ability to it's best advantage staying 10' in the air and striking downward with my glaive. However I need to be able to organize us so that I can save the rest of my party from certain doom. Any and all tactics would be helpful, even if they aren't specific to the character types I've listed above. Thanks for the help, -Rhuell |
| guru789204-15-06, 03:00 AM | 2 words: LEEEEEERRROOOYY JJJENNNNNKKINNNS!! seriously though, if you have only one target, the best thing to do for is use spells like slow or glitterdust or other spells that can make a creature more vulnerable, and then add 'buff spells' to your barbarain. alternatively casters can use summons to flank opponants (persuing a necromatic path is also a good idea) also take levels in ranger, paliden, druid, or cleric. you have no divine people for turning undead or healing, and that is most likley hurting your party. I would advise going paliden, secondly cleric or druid, and ranger ONLY if you would start using a bow. Paliden would fit your current path, but has a lot of restictions. cleric or druid are good if you want to be a divine (wis based) caster, I'd take cleric over(turning), druid, but druids are very versitile(spells and shifting). the barbarian, keep slicing and dicing! |
| Rhuell04-15-06, 03:19 AM | Thanks for replying. I like the idea of summon spells to allow for flanking, but we don't really have a way to do that....guess we'll have to buy some items that do that for us. Great idea. thanks. as for going Paladin....there's no way any one in this party could become one. I am True Neutral and more than a little greedy. I tend to be more FORCED to aid my party when it becomes necessary than actually WANTING to help them, it's just how Etherim is. as for the barbarian....self explanatory and the elf ...well...she's too much a free spirit, she's good aligned.....the only one in the party I might add, but she's very chaotic. I DO use a bow occasionally, but more often I rely on my immense STR (currently a 20 will be a 22 once i reach level 11 as a Janni) to whack my enemies from above with a glaive (10ft. reach). I use my enlarge person power on myself to increase my STR to 22 and my reach to 15 ft. It keeps me out of harm's way while ensuring I can slice and dice whatever is below me. Cleric would be interesting, but we actually have potions and items that allow us to deal with undead, but we haven't really come across any, just a lot of dire animals and crazed bandits. Druid would be an interesting choice as well, but being a genie with no magical enhancements to my ability scores would actually lose out playing a druid as my racial bonuses would not translate over into a wild shaped form. Only my INT, WIS, and CHA would stay the same. My STR, DEX, and CON are all higher than almost any of the animals I could change into. I will take the advice on the spells you suggested and tell our sorceress/dragon disciple how they can benefit her and subsequently the rest of us. -Rhuell |
| taradusis04-15-06, 01:15 PM | Have you considered adding another warm body to the party? Most DND games do best with at least 4 pc's :) Nothing wrong with changing the odds against the DM ,is there? You could consider a wall of force scroll or buy a cube of force, something to hedge out animals and physical threats while you recuperate?Just a few random thoughts,no offence meant :) |
| Edymnion04-15-06, 01:27 PM | Our DM is throwing us up against creatures with a CR of 4+ our current level in an attempt to even things out. In our party we have a half orc barbarian/frenzied berserker, a janni (that's me) and a wild elf sorceress/dragon disciple.Would I get yelled at if I said "Retire your character and make a new one, because its obviously your character the DM is having trouble with, and the other players are being punished by these high level monsters just because the DM is trying to keep your character in line. You are being a disruption, and the polite thing to do would be to drop the character and make a more normal one instead." ? |
| Rhuell04-17-06, 02:56 AM | Yes, you would get yelled at. Just kidding....sorta. I'll explain. My genie is no more powerful than any other character in the party. Remember I am leveling him using the progression listed in Savage Species. He only has 5HD at 7th level, three feats and a few of his genie powers. Our DM is not having trouble with me and I am not a disruption, she reviewed the level progression of a Janni in the Savage Species book before she allowed me to even create the character. I also roleplay my character as opposed to using his powers and abilities to simply create combat-god. He is a combat-god, because of the way I statted him, but I roleplay him differently than an idiot who loves combat and carnage. Our DM IS having trouble with setting us up against a party with only three members, however there are only three players available so adding another character would really put a damper on Roleplaying if one of us is forced to RP a second character. Hence why I am asking for tactics against ...well..basically BOSS-type monsters, those of party level+4 or more. I guess what it all means is that I'm looking for boss-tactics. -Rhuell |
| taradusis04-17-06, 11:37 AM | Something that gives you a breather like a sanctuary spell or wall of stone, this would allow you to heal, start a new rage, discuss tactics in the middle of a battle?Tangle foot bags and other alchemy items are useful, consider a few arrows of slaying....try to guess if the dm is going to throw aberrations ,undead, evil, etc. and choose a "six-pack" of arrows of slaying of the right type, sort of like a sandman from the logans run books, where they had sandman pistols with 6 types of ammo?Have you considered a ring of blinking,I think they're cheap, look for opponents who carry a good weapon you can use after you've defeated them...this may require consultibg a sage? |
| LivingShadow04-19-06, 01:53 PM | ever consider a composite longbow you could do just about the same damage from 100 or so feet up in the air allowing you to just avoid all melee also consider getting a few wings of flying so your companions can join you |
| Rhuell04-19-06, 03:08 PM | I DO have a composite longbow and I do make use of it every once in a while. However my glaive has a 10ft. reach so unless the enemy has a 10ft reach weapon. They can't hit me. If they DO have a 10ft. reach....then I use my Enlarge Person power on myself (since the Janni can do this) and now i have a 15ft. reach and can remain out of THEIR reach. I will tell my group about the wings of flying though. However I won't let our resident Barbarian/Frenzied Berserker have one. That would be disastrous. When he frenzies he would view the rest of the party, ie: the elf and myself as enemies, he has already injured the elf once to near-death. He can only end a frenzy with a will save, which he has been unable to pass recently until the second or third try consistently. If he gained the power to fly he would be a danger to everything including myself. Though my character, being Neutral, would escape via any means necessary.....in this case he would planeshift out of there. The problem with that, though, is that without the power to teleport when I planeshift BACK I will not be in the same place when I shifted out. Same Planet, yes, but not the same location. I would have to spend weeks, months or even years of game-time to find my party again. But if only the elf had a pair of Wings of Flying it would be more useful. Thanks. |
| LivingShadow04-20-06, 02:33 PM | Yes I overlooked that you have a frenzied bezerker the wings also have the bonus of getting the sorceress out of the way if she wants to avoid combat also maybe she should learn hold person to keep the berzerker in check (it requires a will save which he seems to fail a lot) |
| Rhuell04-21-06, 03:04 AM | heh...ironically it's ONLY the Will Save to stop frenzying that he fails a lot. Any Will Save that would potentially be helpful to US he tends to pass. So yeah...I'd rather not have to rely on him FAILING a save to keep us safe. I'm working out a tactic to deal him Intelligence damage to knock him out. His INT is only 7. So two apps of Touch of Idiocy via the Spectral Hand spell would have the best chance of stopping him. (effectively 2d6 points of ability damage to INT, WIS, and CHA.....no Save) Thanks again for the post. And watch your own back if you have a Frenzied Berserker in your group ;) |
| LivingShadow04-21-06, 01:36 PM | The worst I have is a half-giant barb I also have delt with a minotar barb/cleric so the best strat including one of those is to go long and let them tear up the enemy formation |
| JacksonCash04-21-06, 02:04 PM | Get him a wisdom boost medallion or something, help him with those saves! |
