I would like to recommend the Heroes Craftsman Competitions that have been hosted on these boards. As both past winner and current judge, I have seen some excellent material, both in terms of character builds and character backstories. I shall try and post links to some of my favorites later.

I played this character recently:

The Fletcher

The Fletcher comes down in legend as an immortal lone archer for hire.

The true fletcher existed 400 years ago. Believed to be a
hermaphrodite, the fletcher wandered the lands as a warrior for hire
or an independent agent for various conflicts. As the generations
progress, The Fletcher would take an apprentice, train them in the
skills the Fletcher. When the master died, the apprentice take over
and keep the legend alive. The apprentice would sew a patch of their
cloak into the Fletcher master's cloak and take on the identity of the
master. The current Fletcher wears a patchwork cloak worn by every
previous fletcher (the patches help keep it together)

Both men and women have taken the mantle disguising their true sex.
Other cannot discern the sex. The Fletcher gives no clue to that sex.
He or she dresses uniquely and performs tasks and functions as either
a man or female. In appearance the Fletcher is thin and bald with no
facial hair or body hair. The skin is tanned from the outdoors and the
clothes are unkept due to constant traveling. They are are a mix match
of found items custom tailored to the Fletchers strange sense of
style.

The Fletcher is at one with nature but sides in conflicts on either side as he is paid. It isnot uncommon to overhear the Fletcher talking to himself and referring to itself in the third person in the present, future and past( "The
Fletcher need wanting kills all Chaos as is done in Great War".) The
Fletcher can have very confusing conversations. Fortunately he/she has
few words.

In areas where the Fletcher legends are common, the Fletcher's
reputation and can help and hinder the character. In situations where
the Fletcher had appeared as a hero the character gains the
benefits of that belief. In places where the Fletcher is feared or
hated their is a negative reaction. Skills in Bluff,
Intimidate and disguise are crucial to to keep up the guise. As
Fletcher increases in experience those skills are improved and he is
able to take advantage of those situations. At the same token, the
guise also attracts negative reactions from those that the Fletcher
opposes.

**** The ideal class of the Fletcher would be a Ranger specializing in
bow. The skills used by the fetcher are the standard of the ranger
with a few Cross class definitions:

Craft-Bowmaking: The Fletcher makes his/her own bows and arrows. All
other items are found including armor and melee weapons. The fletcher
rarely buys anything-and if her or she does so usually takes it apart
and repairs it to their own liking. The Fletcher would bypass any bow
that may be superior to his own.

Craft-Armor making-to repair and make his/her armor. This includes the
cloak. The Fletcher will usually take armor pieces from slain victim.
The Fletcher is indifferent to life or property.

Intimidate/ Bluff/ Disguise: Used in situations where the Fletcher
reputation is known and he/she uses it . The Fletcher is not known for
Diplomacy.

Knowledge: Local History The Fletcher is Familiar with the many places
his predecessors had traveled-all kept in a journal he or she keeps
up. The Journal is written in cryptic writing and is useless to anyone
else.

Gather Information: By use of the Fletchers contacts (created by
previous incarnations) the Fletcher can gather information from
people. A successful roll indicates that a known agent or descendant
of an agent is available to provide information. This is simply for
effect and does not hinder or add to the gather information check.

Profession: Bow and armor maker. The Fletcher can easily gain
employment a professional weapon or armorer if he/she chooses.
Usually on the rare occasion when funds are low(and their is no chaos
to hunt). Typically though, he/she is hired as a mercenary and
fulfills that duty but is very aloof from others.

I'm thinking of making a two handed weapon style ranger (from the book Wildscape) orc who hunts orcs (favored enemy max with orc). He believes that "If you truly want to epitomise your species, you want to defeat all of it."
Oh, I can't wait till my DM starts hating me.
It'll be fun.

while not a build here is a bit of back story to my favorite charecter in a buddys home brew explaining his disapearance during the chaos that happend after a massive battle with a red dragon at a mage tower also the adition of the half celestial template that he would have when the dm and i decided to bring him back.

THREE YEARS OF HELL

After Kael found out he was stuck in hell he started walking cursing under his breath about the death of his horse and wondering how his friends were.

Days passed with little activity and the landscape never changed stark and gloomy with a touch of lava for color as he trudged on he felt that he was being watched constantly so refused to sleep until on the fifth day when exhaustion overcame him and he collapsed to the ground and lost consciousness.

The dream started off good enough: Kael was working steel in Diasas in the Calvary barracks he felt the heat of the forge and the beautifull sound of hammer striking steel in steady succession but soon the dream took a darker tone. Outside the barracks he could here the sound of the alarm bells ringing and could hear the shouts of the officers calling there men together, Kael quickly swaps hammer for sword and ran to the street and stopped dead as he took in the scene. Everyone was dead, not just dead but brutally hacked up and where there should be blood there was only a black slime that he recognized all to well. He ran through the streets trying to find the enemy with a scream of sheer rage and frustration escaping his lips that never seemed to end, street after street building after building the screams of the dieing just out of reach no matter how fast he moved he never made it in time to save anyone.

His scream of rage and frustration carried on even as he woke up swinging his sword in a wild arc.

His swing was true and cleaved the head from a creature that he had never seen before, he stopped the swing and looked around he was surrounded by more of these creatures all of which snarled at him and started to move forward. Kael smiled grimly there were easily 15 of these things but his pride would not let him give up with a quick step he closed the gap between him and his foes and started swinging.

"STOP!" a females voice bellowed. Kael stopped in midswing his arm frozen in place. Teeth grinded and muscles flexed but no mater how hard he tried he could not move an inch, the group parted to let their leader approach.

She was the most beautiful thing that Kael had ever seen until he noticed the bat like wings protruding from her back. Her walk showed a confidence that let him know that she was used to getting what she wanted.

" Well what do we have here?" the demon said as she ran a finger down the side of his face and looked Kael over. As she circled around him she undid his sword belt dropping his weapons to the ground and proceeded to disarm him..

"What is your name?" she asked.

"Kael" was all he said.

"My name is Staraille, but you can call me master." with that the demon laughed.

With a grim look of hatred on his face Kael spat in her face.

Quicker than he would have given her credit for the demon's hand struck forward like a viper attacking, Kael roared in pain and stared down at the demons hand were his left eye was held between 2 fingers.

Kael tried to lash out and strike the demon but still found himself unable move.

"Now that wasn't very nice, a slave should have better manners than that, but you will learn soon enough."

With a wave of her hand the succubus’s servants closed in and beat Kael unconscious.

Kael’s sleep was tainted by the same nightmare and when he awoke he was in a small cell barely big enough for him to lie down in. Staraille was standing in front of his cage smiling, "So you finally woke up. Are you going to behave this time Kael?” Kael scowled at his tormenter and lunged at the bars.

With a wink of her eye Kael’s actions were not his own he had been charmed yet again the thing that he hated most was now his master and he was nothing but a puppet.

During the time that followed Kael was slowly broke mentally and physically and he found that he had lost his will to disobey his new master, between the constant torture and her insidious magic charm the fighter found that no mater how hard he tried he always ended up following her orders. At first he was sent on simple errands collecting things for his master other times he would lead small groups of demons to attack her enemy’s and after 2 years of this she cautiously decided to send him out to do some real damage. He was sent back to the material plane and felt from the first moment he was being watch but orders are orders and he had a job to do. He crept into the city of Ara under the cover of night and his orders were to kill the high priest named Salom and he would complete his mission. There was little resistance at the church a few younger priests who studied late into the night that had to be silenced but this was Childs play and the burly warrior climbed the stairs that he knew led to his goal. With hardly a sound Kael crept into to high priests chambers and raised his sword the high priest woke with a start and had enough time for a brief prayer in a language Kael did not understand, he stuck down at the priest sword rising and falling and rising and falling until there was nothing but a destroyed bed and a bloody mess.

There was a voice from behind him " Do you enjoy being a puppet human?" the voice was strange and as he spun he took in the appearance of the speaker. A tall and broad dwarf stood in full plate and a cudgel in his hand and spoke again "Well do you Kael?” Kael’s answer was quick and simple as always "NO!" he shouted and stepped forward. "Do not be so quick to strike my friend that was the answer I was looking for and I have a proposition for you... and in your heart I already know that you cant refuse but it should wait for the right time. We will meet again." and the figure vanished.

His job done Kael returned to his master with a strange feeling unsure how to take the meeting with the dwarf. Days passed into months and things stayed the same the torture continued but Kael felt different as if something had changed in side of him. One day his master came to him with a special request "I need you to do something for me, you will go out and kill your old friends as a sign of loyalty to me. When you are finished with her return to me immediately". Still not feeling well Kael decided that he could not say no and grabbed weapons and armor and returned to his masters chambers for the trip to the material plane.

with some quick hand gestures and some foriegn words the portal that would take him to were he must kill a girl he once saved opened and Kael jumped in sword in hand, but somthing was diferant when he came out the other side of the portal the strange dwarf stood before him and what should have been a castle courtyard was a military barracks. "When we spoke last I mentioned a proposition will you hear me out? or are you in a hurry to strike down your only friends like you did the old high priest?". Kael did not move and nodded to the dwarf to continue. "I see in you things that you can not begin to imagine, by giving into to that demon you have died inside and are nothing more than a fraction of the man you used to be. but inside that thick skull of yours burns a fire that consumes, your desire for revenge is the strongest I have seen in years."

the dwarf motioned for Kael to follow and he did and the dwarf led him into one of the barracks to show men sleeping that fitfull sleep the night before a big battle. "Once not long ago you longed for glory and showed no fear in the face of your ememys...how would you like to have that back and all the glory you can dream of? things are happening, things that could use somone like you and I offer you a chance to take your revenge on your master and those that move to do your land harm"

Kael silent still looked down at the sleeping soldiers and remembered what it was like, he remembered his friends and he remembered the thrill of battle when it was one he chose and kneeled before the dwarf looking him in the eye "Grant me the chance and I will show you revenge on a level not seen before." the dwarf smilled at Kael and reached out and touched his shoulder the black armor with his former masters crest disapeared and in its place was a shinning mithril shirt with the mark of St. Cuthbert god of vengeance. then the pain happend... pain as wings sprouted from his back and extended to there full size, wings with feathers the color of a ravens.

"Your weapon does not suit you any longer, try this one on for size" and with a nod a sword like no other apeared in the fighters hands long and heavy with the keenest edge Kael had ever felt. "Now go through that portal behind you and show me the revenge you spoke of" and with that the dwarf disapeared a beaming smile on his face. Kael spun about and leaped through the portal and back to his former masters domain to wreak bloody vengeance on her and all her minions.

The gate guards died quickly not even a chance to shout a warning as the vicious blade cleaved through them and Kael ran to the door not stopping to open it but instead smashed through letting his shoulder take the brunt of the blow. in the inner meeting hall no one was expecting this when they turned at the sound of the smashing door they witnessed vengeance personified before them stood Kael a massive sword in hand muscles bulging and wings outstreched as he bellowed a battle cry so loud and long that the defenders feared it would shake the very walls to the ground.

Kael moved forward his sword destroying all that dared to stand before him and made his way to his former masters chambers were he would soon show the demon ***** who she had messed with. the door was locked and Kael kicked it down with one mighty blow and leaped into the room, there his former master sat with a look of shock on her face the only things standing between Kael and her were 4 Yugoloths and he wasted no time closing the gap between them and the battle was on. It was brutal and deadly Kael found himself grappling, kicking, and hacking and then a portal openeded beneath the combatants and there was bright light and shouting but still he fought on screaming curse's at the demons in the foul language Infernal...

I had a few fun back stories for a few characters i have built:

1) rogue outcast. her mother died during childbirth and her farther took to drink soon after. The narrowminded villagers blamed her for the death and always predicted that she would follow in her father's footsteps. joined with a bunch of recent visitors in the town one stormy night to fend off some trogs. She later traveled with them until encountering a very well run thieve's guild at which point she left them to pursue her career in the thieve's guild (at which time she became an NPC and worked her way up to become the guild's top assassin).

2) gnome outcast. Fanny (the easy to pronounce version) grew up in a very magically inclined family. the only daughter out of 4 sons, she was very pampered. She loved any and all books dealing with noble knights and daring princess rescues. Her parents were dismayed to find that Fanny had no talent at all for magic. They finally let her train in swordmanship, though ashamed of her martial talent. Her teacher was so impressed with her skills that he recomended her to the top military accademy and convinced her parents that it was an honor for her to go, as nearly every head of the more important cities trained there. Her parents died during her last year of school, at which time she took up adventuring becuase she wanted to distance herself from the pain of thier loss. She eventually earned enough wealth and fame to return home and to live her dream of teaching other more martially-inclined gnomes the ways of fighting. (yes, Fanny was a Fullplate, Towershield wielding gnome fighter, and a damned fun one to play :P)

however, now that i DM, i find that 90% of the NPCs i have created have even more complex backgrounds, even the ones that my players have yet to meet or met only once (like a bard who, along with his brother, run a shop where rich people can commision works of music from him. he wanders the countryside searching for that perfect hero or heroic party for the right epic that would make him famous, and thats the sort version).
