i thought about just adding to the best one-liners thread, but i'm being more general.

i just wanna hear some great gaming stories, in general.

this is one i relate very often when i meat new gamers. (it's pretty long, but cronicles the better part of the life of one of my favorite characters ever)

---------------
I had Danath IronForge, a dwarven monk. my DM didn't grant experience, instead he threw really hard encounters at us, and if we managed to survive long enough, we generally gain a level. of course, dying happened alot.

without specifics at first, i was a dwarven monk, i died, reincarnated as a satyr (whom the DM thought it was funny to force to make will saves or be.. "distracted" by nearby goats). anyway, another death, reincarnated to human, another death true resurrected as a dwarf.

now the best part, we'd been asked to accompany a paladin to take care of the lich. apparently the lich had discovered something which he believed could bestow godhood upon him, except he had to become mortal again. we were to stop this from happening.

we get to the tower, from the entry hall we can go up a long set of spiralling stairs, or into a side-room. we go into the side room. inside the side room is a large pit of sand with arcane runes wriitten in it. on one side of the room are 3 chests. i was feeling particularly fool-hardy that day, so i openned all 3 chests (one at a time) and summarily barely survived 3 traps, which incidentally destroyed any treasure they had contained. well, danath got a little flustered at all that, so he decided surely a big pit of sand with arcane writings must hide something important. so i tell the DM i want to dig around in the sand for a while. he asks if i'm sure. well, of course, i'm sure. me and all the other players for a spectacular (and probably deadly) event to occur. strangely, nothing happens and i just succeed in stirring up the sand and making myself dirty.

there's also a small tunnel that leads from this room farther down, but we decide to go check out the top of the tower. at the top we find some sort of portal, and danath throws something in, after which a couple angry balors pop out (my DM loved balors for some reason). keep in mind, we were fairly low level, i only had slow fall of 50 feet at the time. we were powerful for our level, but a couple balors is still pretty challenging, but we survived.

ok, so go back down and check out the tunnel. at the bottom we find another sand pit, but in this sand pit is a very large group of mhorgs, and the lich is on the far side of the chamber. he says something appropriate for the situation and commences to complete a spell which turns the mhorgs into one giant mhorg. well, that's what was supposed to happen. instead, after the arcane energies fade, we see this huge conglomeration of undead parts. multiple limbs, multiple heads, malformed bits, etc etc. Apparently the completion of the spell hinged on the existence of certain arcane writings etched in an identical sand pit on an upper floor. the DM told me that he NEVER expected ANYONE to try what i did, he assumed we'd all be too afraid of the magical writings to mess with it. HA

ok, so now we have an angry lich. the first thing my monk sees is the lich grasping a green apple. my monk wasn't terribly intelligent, but he'd been informed of a phylactary, so at this point he assumes the apple to be the phylactary, and using his monk speed (and i think something else that enhanced my speed), he runs across the chamber and grabs the apple away from the lich, and proceeds to squish it. at this point the DM informs me that the juices of the apple have a distince divine feel to them, most unlike normal apples. then it dawns on Danath what we came here for in the first place, because the lich had found a means to become a god. right.

well, then the lich grabs a small sack with something inside with a distinct apple-like shape, he casts time stop, and in a blink of an eye, he's gone. well, he must have went up! so danath springs out and up to the top of the tower only to find the lich preparing to hand the sack to a balor. so i do the only reasonable thing: 1) tumble between lich & balor, 2) grab bag, 3) tumble off 200 foot tall tower. i succeeded all successive rolls.

so, while i'm falling down the tower, slowing myself as best i can, i engorge myself on the apple, and pull out a potion of spider climb. as divine energy is flowing through my body (although not fully absorbed yet), the lich appears next to me floating in mid-air, looking quite angry, so he casts polymorph other on me, and i find myself being a badger, he then casts teleport on me, and i find myself in a random forest.

on the upside, i now have a divine rank of 0. and, because my DM had a sense of humor, and we all wanted to see what my character would do from this point, after some wandering in the forest, a small party passes by where my badger is standing. one party member is a drow sorcerer (therefore, having a somewhat twisted sense of humor), who decides that a badger polymorphed into a human would be really funny. this is more funny, because that particular adventuring group were PC's of ours that we were playing in different campaign the same DM was running.

so, to recape. Danath the Dwarven Monk: dwarf, satyr, human, dwarf, badger, human.

At this point danath develops a slight obsession with divinity and began seeking any divine knowledge or power he could obtain.

my eventual goal (which i didnt get to achieve, because the group has disbanded) was to become a true deity. my portfolio? shapechangers, and adapting to changes.

oh, it should be noted, that within the lich's tower, there were enough apples and other forms of the same magic to obtain a divine rank of 4, but i ended up being the only one to get anything, because the rest of the party bickered over the remaining bits.

------
long, like i said, but danath will always hold a soft spot in my gaming history, i hope to bring him back out again some day.
