Greataxe Question [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-01-05, 09:40 AM Is there a way to "sheath" a greataxe. I know you cant really sheathe a greataxe but is there a way you could attach it to your body/gear, so that it could be drawn like a normal weapon, or is it one of those weapons you just have to carry everywhere?

01-01-05, 10:36 AM There were covers for the axes in history, so I see no reason for there not being a Sheath for a great axe, though they were much more cumbersome to remove than a sheath was from a sword.

01-01-05, 10:56 AM Well, you don't have snaps or velcro to work with. I always assumed that the character had a sort of harness w/ loose leather loops over his back that the haft went thru for carrying when he did not expect trouble, and if he had reason to anticipate combat, he'd just carry it in hand.

01-01-05, 07:05 PM that's a good question. I also thought that you would just pt it through leather straps, but wouldn't that start cutting yo up if you hit the ground or something similar? I am also wondering if there is any way to store the more extic weapons such as the spiked chain or double weapons?

01-01-05, 07:13 PM Great Axes (sofar as I'v ever used them) are held in specially made sheiths carried on the back. The charicter reaches over thier shoulder to pull it out, usaully.

01-01-05, 07:15 PM I agree with Melpomene. Same rule for all two-handed weapons, actually- generally speaking they're too heavy/large to carry at your side, so you hoist the weight over your back.

As for taking damage when you land on them... well, yeah, probably. But that would be symbolic of a critically failed tumble check or something.

A loop of leather on the end that loops around a protusion. Another protrusion father down cradles the axe head to keep it from swinging, much like a lance cradle.

01-01-05, 07:37 PM Of course, I also had an oriantal monk BBEG with a ring-staff and a big chunk of metal on his back. It was only later when he swung the staff over his back, into the metal, and came out with a greatax. Good times. ^_^

01-01-05, 07:42 PM Get some leather and attach it to the back of your clothes or armor so that the opening is facing up. Then place the hilt in the leather cubby so that you can pull it out from over your shoulder.

01-01-05, 07:53 PM Watch Lord of the Rings, and look at Gimli's back for the axe. See how great it is. It is truly, a Great Axe. That's typically how they're carried, and it's an easy thing for pretty much anyone to look at and see.
