For my next play session, there will be 5 pc's and I want to pick a class that would complement the other players. I don't care what kind of class it is because I would like to try them all.

There will be a cleric, maybe a rogue, maybe a monk, and I don't know what the other player is going to be (or if he'll even play)

I was thinking maybe an arcane caster if the other guy will pick a fighter-type or something.

If that's the case, would a warmage be a good one to start playing as or would wizard or sorcerer be a better choice?

Thanks for any replies.

Wizard over Warmage.
Sorcerer over Warmage.

And the reason for that is, Warmages are far more limited then either of the two core classes. Do Warmages do more pure damage? Yes. Do they get the comfort of wearing armor? Sure do.

But, Wizards and Sorcerers have countless spells chock-full of variety in dozens sourcebooks available to them, while the Warmage's spell list is condemned to the relatively few listed in Complete Arcane. And once you're posed with a problem that can't be solved by throwing d6s at it, you'll realize how limited the Warmage can be.

Now, as for Wizard vs. Sorcerer, that's a trickier question and the answer depends completely on your personal play style.

Sorcerers require little maintenance or preparation thanks to spontaneous spells, and can last considerably longer without running out of juice. On the downside, they are always a little behind Wizards and are less adaptable since they can't change what spells they know each day. Plus, Sorcerers have access to Heritage Feats, if you're into that sort of thing. If you like the freewheeling, repository of blasting power that the Warmage has but wwant far more spellcasting options available, pick this one.

Wizards advance in the levels of spells available to them faster then Sorcerers, and also get bonus feats every 5 levels. Their main asset is their use of a spellbook - the only limits to how many spells a Wizard can know are simply gold to scribe, availability of new spells and pages in your spellbook. A well-prepared and researched Wizard can have a spell for ready every situation. On the negative side, Wizards, while having greater potential variety of spells then a sorcerer, can cast them less times per day. They require lots of effort devoted to prep since they must prepare all their spells in advance unlike a Sorcerer, and a Wizard's spellbook can be lost somehow, rendering him helpless.

Okay I'll try a wizard first then. Thanks for the response.

No, go Sorcerer the best counter spell class over all mages because (if spell is chosen) the spells are easily ready. Know the Shadow Spells they will generate almost any spell on the list. The Wizard may change spells every day, but you have to prepare a limited 4 spell slots. You can leave them open, but in the middle of a fight you can't fill those slots.
