| Palomides08-11-06, 03:57 PM | Last night I rolled 12 one out of 20-22 rolls. We're playing with a fumble table. Nothing happen from my fumbles but one of our player is a monk and fumble while hitting with a paralyzing attack and hit me and I fail my save. I almost die from a coup de grace if it was not from our barbarian on is AoO. It was ridiculous to see all that badluck. Anyone with play session like that ? |

Once or twice, but the really amusing times is when it happens to the enemies =P Our fumble system is a bit different though. Natural 1s count as a -10 (before modifiers). It is only a fumble/critical-failure if the total is in the negatives (so if you have +5 bab, +4 from STR, and then +1 from a masterwork weapon, thats 0 and thus no fumble). |
| Stumm_Dolch08-11-06, 04:01 PM | I had a friend who on his 2nd ever game of any pen and paper RPG did not roll over 5 on D20s for an entire 6 hour session. I'm not exaggerating. He really thought he was "bad" at the game. I just laughed and told him that while I'd never seen anything like that, it had nothing to do with him. Next session he crit'd my BBEG on the first round of combat with a Longsword... in back to back rounds. |
| DM_Greatness08-11-06, 04:05 PM | The Psi Warrior have a game like that during our last session. He was fighting against a Gith, which has a psionic bubble effect granting the 20% miss chance. My player missed FIVE TIMES IN A ROW, not because he couldn't land a hit, just because he couldn't roll higher than 20%! If was evil, but I couldn't quit laughing, and continued to shread his armor and flesh into pieces. He got so mad on the 5th one that he got up, and left the table to go outside and yell! It was so funny, and everyone was laughing so hard, the entire game had to go on pause. There is a thing called the 'Gamble Edict' or something like that. And it go something like "It doesn't matter what you rolled before, because it has no bearing on the roll you are about to make" .... so, if you flipped a coin 9 times and got tails every time, and you go to flip that coin again, the chances are a soild 50/50 of you getting heads or tails. All the flips before that don't mean anything. |
| Drodain08-11-06, 04:25 PM | ya i have games like this all the time, i've been playing about 2-3 years, and i have critted once, i rarely get into the upper tens, and usually below 10. i can roll a 20 on any unimportant skill check i want, but when it matters i'm usually horrible....although when we need it most i roll a 20 skill check, never a 20 attack...ever |
| aotrscommander08-11-06, 04:54 PM | Our current party's rogue/assassin has a dagger that potentially petrifies on a threat. There are three party members (two more are just coming in). So far score in ration of members of party petrified to monsters petrified is 2:2. The first instance as when the rogue got mentally controlled and stabbed the cleric. Who failed his save. Naturally HE had the scroll of Break Enchantment I had instisted we buy to that express purpose. We were miles from civiliastion in some mountains, so my Psychic Warrior had to trek back o the nearest city with the semi-concious rogue strapped to the donkey, periodically smacking him in the head with a hammer to keep him unconcious to get a mage and another scroll to free the cleric. The second time the rogue fumbled and perrified himself, requiring a trip back to the city with a stone rogue on the cart we had bought for this sort of eventuality. But then our groups have got collective incompetance down to a fine art. I have seen numerous occasions where the entire party has been unable to roll in double digits. On one specutacular occasion, the entire party were climbing a 500' high cliff, roped together and we had a chain failure of climb rolls leaving us to fall off one after another (the only reason we survived was becasue the wizard teleported back up to the top to hold the rope!) And there was the legendary 'Battle of the Fumbles' in the last Rolemaster campaign. I have never seen so many dire rolls and idiocy by both PCs and NPCs in engagement. |
| Palomides08-11-06, 04:55 PM | Myself, I almost always miss my save. I have a wizard who died twice in a situation where if you miss 2 saving throws you die like phantasmal killer, the other was turn to stone by a basilisk and failed the fortitude check on the stone to flesh. It's a running gag. Particularly if it's a charm person. It's sure I will miss, even if I miss only on a 1. And that is not only on a pc I play, it's on all my pcs. |
| PiedmonSama08-12-06, 02:26 AM | God, I have the worst luck on dice. I don't know what it is, but when I roll a d20, I definitely get <10 way more times than I get >10. It's gotten to the point where no matter what class I play I'm always looking to do as much as I can to get myself the best modifier possible. Scrambling for high ground, concealment, flank bonuses.... I try to never leave things to chance, because chance always screws me. I know I sound superstitious.... well, I kind of am. If a dice of mine goes on a "hot streak" I ride it out until the dice gets "exhausted" (gets one bad roll) and then I switch to another dice. I don't know why, but I swear it's never "good roll, bad roll, good roll, bad roll." It's always a string of good rolls and then a string of bad rolls. Invariably. Crazy stuff. |
| ZaPPZion08-12-06, 04:52 AM | lol, i think everyone remembers just their worst scenarios, but you throw so often that basicly you will throw just like normal (like 3.5 on a d6). but.. to join the club... my character (wizard) has terrible hp's :( (lvl 1 4hp(standard), lvl 2 1hp, lvl 3 1hp, lvl 4 2!hp, lvl 5 1hp) so i think it's pretty screwed, but since i'm going to learn polymorph when i'm able to, it should be fine ;) |
| Shaggy_Shaggs08-12-06, 05:12 AM | *wince* You want to talk about bad luck? I once loosed something like 20 arrows at enemies with AC 14 (and my attack bonus was +8 for each of those) and hit once. That's actually the luckier archer of mine, though. Back in 2E I had an elven archer (fighter) named Cerentil. On paper he was an amazing shooter, but in practice his attacks were steady string of natural 1s. It got to where we'd require double confirmation on threatened critical failures and he'd still blow it. The running gag with that group was he was the inventer of the new spell, Cerentil's Boomeranging Nerf Arrow. It was ridiculous. Any time he took a shot and it mattered, after the end of the chaos the monster was laughing, the arrow was in about five pieces somewhere behind him, and everything was wrecked except the monster and the party, neither of which had been touched. We eventually just explained it as Cerentil had some kind of genetic defect due to inbreeding. He was part of a noble family that believed in keeping bloodlines "pure". |
| Endarrion08-12-06, 09:05 PM | In a campaign I DMed a while ago I had one of the players roll three saving throws in this order: Ref, Fort, and Will and he rolled a 2 on EVERY SINGLE ROLL!!!! It was crazy. We were all lauging so hard. Especially considering what the saving throws were for (something I cannot mention here for fear of moderator retribution). We still poke fun at him for it to this day. He laughs about it to, although I'm sure the joke is starting to get old (even though I don't think so ;) ). |
| Salla08-12-06, 09:15 PM | I refuse to play in games that use critical fumbles. Missing is failure enough, and fights are hard enough without having to worry about Bubba the Barbarian, seasoned veteran of a hundred bloody wars, decapitating himself. |
| Pangeon08-12-06, 10:47 PM | In an evil campaign, my Gnome bard and another player's gnome rogue snuck into a merchant's house and robbed him blind. He was awake, too, and the DM told us all of his rolls. 1, 1, 2, 3, 1... The DM made at least 10 Listen / Spot checks for the poor guy, and he never rolled above a 5. The one time either of our characters rolled below a 10 was when my friend rolled a 3 on his move silently check... to which the merchant rolled a 1. Sadness. In the same campaign the party's fighter has rolled 1, 1, and 3 for his hit points. Also in the same campaign, due to luck of the dice our party has decimated foes/groups of foes up to 4 CRs above us. (He likes big battles.) In another campaign the party's Sorcerer / Wild mage has missed 4 out of the 5 Scorching ray attacks he's ever made... all ranged touch attacks against an AC of 10. (He's 7th level... more sadness.) |
