hey. ive been doing some work on my "good guy w/ daemonic disposition" and decided to use a sort of lycanthropy approach.

as far as race goes, his father was a Maenad, and his mother was an Elf. as such, he is very passionate about his views. he acts very stand-offish and cold, but he cannot tolerate seeing another in pain. his first real bout with his inner raging came when he saw a very close friend of his, a human girl, about to be raped by a rogue from a neighboring village. though the deed was never accomplished, Crow (my character) saw the very intent of such a degredation against someone he loved as warranting death. no holds barred, he threw the rogue off his friend and, before he was aware of it, he had ripped the culprit's throat out.

later, it became apparent that he did not simply have the amplified rage of inherent in his father's race. born with black, rave-like wings, Crow was somehow even more unique...capable of great good, as well as great evil, all depending on the choices that he makes...

Crow can become either a half-fiend of a half-celestial following the rules of lycanthropy with a few exceptions:

Rage Check: Crow may take a Full-Round action in order to make a Rage check with a DC of 20 for 1st level class level in Half-Fiend/Celestial, 25 for 2nd, 30 for 3rd, and 40 for 4th. this check is Charisma based and has a modifier equal to the amount of damage that has been dealt to the party thus far. On a successful rage check, Crow may become a Half Fiend of Half Celestial the an amount of rounds equal to the amount that the check was passed by. Afterward, Crow is fatigued for 1d4 rounds. The death of a friend aoutomatically causes him to assume a 4th level Half-Fiend of Celestial for an amount of rounds equal to the class level of creature he is actually capable of manifesting. afterward, he becomes fatigued for 4 rounds.

Crow begins play capable of manifesting as a 1st Level Half Fiend as shown in the Savage Progressions article. this form can only be used through testing for Rage. if the form is mastered, it can be treated as natural lycanthropy for all intents and purposes for whatever class levels he has control of. in order to gain control of a level as a half fiend/celestial, Crow must spend an amount of weeks equal to the desired class level of the form and spend 200 XP per week. at the end, he must make a Wisdom based check with a DC of 15 to control a 1st level form, 20 for 2nd level, 25 for 3rd level, and 35 for 4th level. Crow can only gain control of one level as EITHER a half-fiend or celestial at any given time and must have manifested as the form naturally before attempting to gain control. he is capable of naturally manfesting any level of 1 higher than he has developed control over in either allignment.

after attaining control of all 4 levels of Half-Fiend and Half-Celestial, Crow may take 5 weeks at 200XP per week to earn the right to make a Wisdom based check at DC 40. the roll is modified by his Wisdom modifier, as well as a +8 circumstance bonus for controlling his other forms if he has had the chance to gain at least 1 level while possessing complete control and it has been over 6 months. a successful check means that he has learned to control his emotions and channel then into a form that replicates the emotions of his soul at any given time. this ability functions exactly like the Shapechange spell, except that he has a limited amount of forms that can be taken. he may have one Good form and one Evil form to represent the emotions of Anger, Grief, a Good form to represent Justice and one for Loyalty, and an Evil form to represent Hatred and one for Revenge. he may also have a Good for simply representing Good, and an Evil for representing Evil. the DM decides the circumstances for which form will be released, but Crow can only ever effectively have 10 forms. these may be replaced by others of similar natures, either stronger versions of the original, the same creature with greater HD, or something completely new (as the DM deems appropriate) as he levels up. any time that Crow manifests an Evil form, he always becomes Fatigued afterward for as many rounds as he was in that form, since, though he has a dark nature, it is contradictory to his personal allignment (Chaotic Good), and he is constantly battling his Evil side. the DM declares what an appropriate form would be based on the circumstances of Crow's mood and recent actions when he undergoes the change.

Once Crow has obtained the Shapechanger ability, he may still use his full mastery over his other forms of Half-Fiend and Half-Celestial as well.

so here's my current idea. been through the wash a few times, but i really like what it's come down to here. let me know what you think.

You've obviously put a lot of effort into this character concept. What does your DM think?

he greatly favors it over the last idea i had which i wont repost for reference cause it was huge...i still need to set a sort of levelling thing up to where he can only attempt to gain control of a certain emotion or manifestation once he's strong enough so that it'll be mroe balanced when he gets to the point of using a 9th level spell. there're 8 prerequisites, sure, but i think there should be a threshold. ive been trying to figure it out....
actually, just looking at the templates, this could work. ok, in his lycan form, he'd get the (Sp) abilities of a half-fiend/celestial depending on the form. well, on the template it sort of divides up the spell listings into prerequisited forms. so here's an idea:

Control Level 1 - Character Level 1st
Control Level 2 - Character Level 3rd
Control Level 3 - Character Level 9th
Control Level 4 - Character Level 11th

by my pay out, he'd need to be at least Character Level 12 before getting a shot at being able to manifest as something greater.

so, with that added in, what do people think of the overall mechanics?
