I was thinkin about makin a monk half iron golem. with his lower arms being the replaced parts starting at 10 level only unfortunately. I was uncertain if the monk speed boosts would be lost because of the template I was also considering changing it from iron to admantium however I'd like some feed back would I lose the monk speed and what would the changes be for admantium also any story ideas I'm horrible at them

I think you are trolling, but I'll bite.

If your monk looses his arms, there are better ways to go than with the iron gollem bit. Wholeness of self for one, regenerate spells for another. Iron hands are a pain in the but to deal with; no nerve endings means no way to control your grip or feel objects. Plus solid iron forearms would be too heavy to carry, your shoulders would pop out of their sockets and if you are really unlucky, they would fall to the ground.

Golems are not alive and therefor can not gain experience levels. They are magical constructs, not a character race. How would your character be created? A human mating with an iron pot?

It is a template in the back of the monster manual II

"Half-golems are the results of good intentioned actions taken too far. While the application of a poultice infused with curative herbs or the casting of a spell can save the life on an injured or diseased person, only powerful magic can replace a missing limb. Such magic is often beyond the reach of the ordinary person working in a quarry or a mill, or scything a field ....."

You get the picture. it is on page 209

To answer the question: your speed boosts would be there, but a half-golem cannot run anyway

Just because it's in the MM2 doesn't mean it is a player character option. Now if he wanted some gnome to build him replacement hands, I don't have a problem with that.

He is obviously playing in a campaign that allows it.

Some people play half dragons. By the rules of the template he is trying to figure out how to create one.

However, in the back of the MM2 you also find this quote (meaning it could be a valid character)

"Half-Golem Characters". Same page. I agree it is mostly for NPCs, but some campaigns have hobgoblin players, etc, or those who want to play something other than core races.

For the original question-A monk (and barbarian, for that matter) would retain speed bonuses. I'd say even with adamantium, since the character would probably have figured out how to cope with the weight of the legs, and the increased strength score helps too.

As for the ethics of a half-golem, I wouldn't allow a half-golem character myself. It has no listed LA. Even so, templates are generally far too dangerous.
However, the leniency varies with the DM. A friend of mine would accept a half-golem, providing that there be a made-up LA of 6-9 or so (whatever seems appropriate) to balance the party.

Finally, story. Whoo boy.
Okay, the half-golem could have once belonged to a militaristic-style monastery, that guarded the city it belonged to from any miscellaneous invasions. Such as one particularly nasty... urm... kobold invasion. That time, the character was on guard duty when a lightning spell hit him square. The particular lightning bolt struck both of the character's legs, rendering them permanently paralyzed. After a medic visit (after the kobolds were defeated soundly), it was determined that only a risky 'operation' would ensure he ever would walk again. This operation involved the amputation of both legs, and the replacement of metal ones. The new procedure took hours of work, to make sure there was no bleeding, that pain was not felt (hard without anesthetic) and that the metal would be fused to the leg properly, and subsequently magically enhanced as a golem normally. The surgery turned out to be a complete success, and the monk was given honorable status for his bravery in that kobold assault.
A little while afterwards, the character left the monastery to wander, with the monastery's blessing, of course. He has since learned to walk better with his new legs, even though the bulkiness of them tends to make him slightly off-balance at times.

That's not a bad story!

My DM has decided the template would make a monk to powerful with the bonuses and such. I don't think there would be a high level adjustment (or even one) however more of a permanent item effect since it has a cost to become one removing buying bracers of ogre str etc I remember there was a write up in a dragon mag on Dorn the half golem in The RITE a forgoten realms book I'l have to find that mag I know it had some feats he used written in it however I don't know if it had a write up on his level

What I don't get is how do would know the LA? IIRC no LA is given.
