| pukunui11-01-06, 09:30 PM | Hi all, I got myself all muddled up in my other thread (Sneaky Character Build (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=10528920)), so I'm starting over ... I hope someone can help. Basically, this is what I've got to work with: CN female halfling rogue 2 STR 10 DEX 15 CON 10 INT 14 WIS 11 CHA 12 1st level Feat: Two-Weapon Fighting Flavor: based somewhat on Lidda - flamboyant (calls herself a "halfling extraordinaire"), carefree, possibly even a bit reckless, but also sneaky. I'm wanting to multiclass her as an "arcane rogue", but I'd rather go with sorceror than wizard despite the low CHA ... it fits better with her personality - I don't think she'd have the patience for wizard training. (I'd also prefer not to have to prepare spells - and there aren't really any spells above 4th level that I want anyway, so I'd only have to add 2 points to CHA. The rest can go into DEX.) Also, TWF won't be a total waste if I aim for Double Wand Wielder later on. The rub: My character has just attained level 3. I'm most likely going to give her another rogue level now, but I don't know what feat to take. (This is kind of urgent because the next session is tonight and I've got about 4 hours left to decide.) I had considered taking a level of swashbuckler to get Weapon Finesse for free, but now I'm not going to do that. I'd still like to, but I think the low STR and CON and Small Size damage are too inhibiting. So should I take Weapon Finesse for my 3rd level feat anyway? Or should I take something else? Other feats I'm considering are: Acrobatic, Iron Will, Improved Initiative, and Rapid Reload. What would be the best build to make with what I've already got? Would rogue 4/sorceror 6/arcane trickster 10 be the best? Or is there something better out there? The real problem is my stats. They're not that great (I rolled 10 11 12 12 13 14 - can you believe it? If I hadn't gotten that one 14 I could have rerolled ...). Someone on the other thread suggested I kill this character off and get a new one, but because my DM insists that we use the default 4d6 rolling method, there's no guarantee my new PC will have better stats. Any and all advice is welcome. I'm not really looking to optimize. I just don't want my PC to be absolute rubbish either. Thanks in advance. - pukunui p.s. please let me know if you need any more info - and feel free to look at the other thread to see what's already been said (and if you've already posted suggestions there, don't feel the need to repeat yourself here, but you're certainly welcome to do so ...). |
| wizarddog11-01-06, 10:15 PM | I would have suggested the weapon finess to increase your Attack. Another option would be to take a level in fighter which will give you a +1 ATT and an extra combat feat. Take the combat expertise and the improve Feint. Then when you sucessfully feint you can add your sneak attack damage on that attack. If you have PHB 2 you might consider the Tumbling Feint. if you have 4+ranks in tumbling. If you move into a square while tumbling (make a DC save) you can on Feint on your standard or next round with a +5 to your bluff. Wizarddog |

Must be one of your first posts! I like Weapon Finesse and I do think it would help. I might end up taking it after all. As for a level in fighter - I thought about it. I'd prefer swashbuckler to get Weapon Finesse for free, but either way, if I'm going rogue/sorceror, then I'll be paying an XP penalty for that level of fighter or swashbuckler ... |
| pukunui11-01-06, 11:29 PM | How about rogue 4/sorceror 6/invisible blade 5/arcane trickster 5? On the other thread I said I didn't want invisible blade because I didn't like the idea of the daggers that much, but I've had a rethink, and it might not be such a bad idea. By 20th level, I'd have SA +4d6 or +7d6 with a dagger, an Impromptu Sneak Attack 1/day, Uncanny Feint as a free action (meaning I'd more than likely be able to sneak attack more than once or twice during any given combat encounter), Feint Mastery (meaning I can take 10 on feinting in combat), and BAB +13/+8/+3 (which is only 18th level rogue BAB but way better than 20th level sorceror BAB). I'd also be at CL 11 for sorceror spells (5th level max). |
| therimorethegreat71611-02-06, 10:49 AM | If you have a high level Rogue then get a ring of blinking and put ghost touch on your weapon. Alway have sneak attack/concealment/and can attack ghost normally. Such a cool little item :D |
| Zherog11-02-06, 11:17 AM | There's really only two feats you ought to consider right now: Weapon Finesse or Improved Initiaitve. Weapon Finesse Will play into your strengths - especially if you go the Invisible Blade route and use daggers. (very cool class, by the way - my wife played one in an Eberron game). Taking Weapon Finesse would increase your attacks from +2 (what you would have as a level 3 rogue) to +4 (your BAB plus your Dex mod). The more often you hit, the more often you have a chance to apply the sneak attack damage. The more often you apply sneak attack damage, the faster the combat ends. Speaking of applying Sneak Attack damage, Improved Initiative will do that for you. Taking it significantly increases your chances of going first in a combat. Anybody who has not acted yet in combat is flat footed, and therefore a valid target for your sneak attack. *** Some other stuff to consider: Rather than taking levels in sorcerer, have you considered ranks in Use Magic Device instead? It won't allow you to take Arcane Trickster (which is also a cool class), but it will allow you to use wands, scrolls, etc - both arcane and divine. For you, a level or two of swashbuckler is probably better than a level or two of fighter. Yes, a fighter gets to pick their bonus feat - but you'd be selecting Weapon Finesse anyway, so you may as well get a class that gives you that and has better skills. You could go with a build something like rogue 3/sorcerer 6/Swashbuckler 5/Invisible Blade 5/Arcane Trickster 1. I don't have my books around, but you could possibly reduce IB by a level or two to get more levels in AT pre-epic. If you're willing to forego Arcane Trickster and just want a few levels of sorcerer to toss a handful of spells around, you could instead go rogue 8/sorcerer 4/swashbuckler 3/invisible blade 5. As I said, though, I would consider ditching the sorcerer idea and instead grab ranks in Use Magic Device. I think the levels in sorcerer will hurt things like your BAB too much to make it a worthwhile choice. |
| pukunui11-02-06, 02:14 PM | Thanks for that constructive response, Zherog. The problem is ... I want to do both! That is, both the whole rogue/swashbuckler route and the whole rogue/sorceror route. However, I think the former would work better if I had decent STR and CON scores and if I wasn't a halfling, whereas the latter seems more conducive to my strengths. Plus, I worked it out and with rogue 4/sorceror 6/invisible blade 5/arcane trickster 5 I'd have the BAB of an 18th level rogue at 20th level. That's not too bad, right? It's certainly way better than a 20th level sorceror's BAB, and in the end I'll be more of a sorceror than a rogue anyway ... Maybe this character would've been better as a gestalt character (but the DM is new and so there's no way that would happen ...) I ended up just going with rogue 3 and taking Weapon Finesse as my 3rd level feat for last night's session. Who knows, maybe in a few weeks' time I'll ditch this stuff altogether and just stick with 20 levels of rogue or something. I change my mind a lot (especially when there are too many options ... :P) |
| pukunui11-02-06, 02:41 PM | I change my mind a lot (especially when there are too many options ... )In fact, I've changed my mind already! Puca suggested on my other thread that I go with either warmage, beguiler, or duskblade. I initially told him no, but now I'm thinking that both beguiler and duskblade could work ... I could do something like rogue 5/beguiler 8/duskblade 7. I'd only end up with +3d6 Sneak Attack dmg, but I'd be able to spontaneously cast such useful spells as mage armor, spider climb, freedom of movement, and greater invisibility as a beguiler (plus use their Surprise Casting ability to enable Sneak Attacks); swift expeditious retreat, swift fly, swift invisibility and a host of nice touch attack spells as a duskblade ... plus the duskblade's full BAB. What do people think of that build? Is that doable as a halfling with my current stats? I wouldn't have to raise my INT at all, so I could focus on pouring my extra points either into DEX or maybe even STR and CON (although it would probably be better to try to get magic boosters for those stats, eh?). EDIT: The only problem I can see with it is that in order not to incur any XP penalty, I pretty much have to switch back and forth between beguiler and duskblade as I level up, meaning I wouldn't get to 8 levels of beguiler (and thus 4th level spells with greater invisibility) until 19th level! Any thoughts? |
| pukunui11-02-06, 08:56 PM | Another combo I like the look of, although I'd have to rely on UMD to get any spell power: rogue 11/fighter 2/shadowdancer 2/thief-acrobat 5 The two levels of fighter are for the BAB and the bonus feats, which will help to qualify for Shadowdancer. Other feats I'll take will be Combat Expertise and Improved Feint. By level 20 I'd have a BAB equal to a 19th level rogue, which ain't too bad. Plus I'd have Sneak Attack +6d6 and a whole bunch of cool things to help with tumbling, feinting, and not getting hit in combat. |
| RobbyPants11-03-06, 03:39 PM | Looking at your Str and Con, I'd avoid any melee based build (and thus would say avoid Weapon Finesse). As for feats, I'd strongly endorse Point Blank Shot, not so much for what it give you, but more for the feats it will open up for you later. This will even be useful if going the arcane trickster route (ray spells). You'll just have to be sure to hit hard early, and get out before you get clobbered! It's hard to avoid a feat that's already locked in ... although I have asked my DM if I can swap out TWF for Point Blank Shot as my 1st level feat (either simply by swapping them or by using the "retraining" rules from the PHB2). I'd like to keep Weapon Finesse so that I do get a better chance of hitting something if/when I am in melee ... Also, another build I'm thinking of is rogue 8/duskblade 7/thief-acrobat 5. I'd be willing to consider only taking the first level of thief-acrobat as Fast Acrobatics, Kip Up, and Steady Stance seem to be the most useful features of that PrC and they're all given out at first level. That would mean putting more levels into either rogue, duskblade, or both. Having 7 levels of duskblade would give me some interesting ray spells (which I can use with SA, right?), as well as some great utility spells like spider climb, swift expeditious retreat, swift fly, and swift invisibility. I know the duskblade is designed as a melee class and the fluff says to have a high STR, but I could see it working to the advantage of an acrobatic, hard-to-hit rogue who jumps into melee, delivers some hits, and then gets out. Besides, if I want to feint (and therefore get more SA opportunities), I have to be in melee anyway, so the duskblade's full BAB and such will help with that (as will having Weapon Finesse). With that concept in mind, TWF is totally useless as I can only use it as a full-round action anyway, which would slow me down and make me more likely to get hit. That's why I've asked if I can swap it out for Point Blank Shot (so I can get the +1 to atk/dmg when doing a ranged sneak attack, and so I can qualify for Precise Shot sooner so I can fire into melee without penalty). |
| On_the_wings_of_TPK11-03-06, 05:15 PM | Well seeing as how it looks like Swasbuckler has fallen to the way side, lets look at the Trickster again. How about rogue 3/ Scorerer 6/ Trickser 10/ X 1 It would give 7d6 sneak attack and 8th level spells. Witch means that if you thrown all your ability boosts form HD in Cha, you'll only have to worry about finding +1 inherent bonus before 19th level. Shouldn't too hard. I would then recomend going down the dual wand route, or using buffs like bears endurance, and fist of stone, to make for bad melee skills. Actually see my first post in your sneaky rogue thread. When i looked at the Buigler, and duskblade, i wasn't impressed. But thats just me, I tend to prefer the core classes. |
| pukunui11-03-06, 05:42 PM | I'm not all that interested in the beguiler, but I do really like the duskblade. I think I could make it work with my current PC. I may never find out though ... I've been playing this character since June, and she's only just reached 3rd level (I only get to play her every other week, and then only for 2.5-3 hours a session). The campaign will probably end when the DM goes back to school in Feb, too, and we may just get our characters to 4th level by then! LOL. So this is probably all just dreaming on my part. Oh well, I can always try stuff out in my own campaign ... |
