hey been workin with an idea for a halfling who is unbearably strong, smart and all around badass any ideas on what classes will make him a melee force to be reckoned with.

I was thinkin fighter or another melee class like swashbuckler because i'll most likely be lightly armored

Fighter will give you feats aplenty, however Barbarian will give you extra speed, the ability to rage, and the size bonus to AC, and it fits with your light armour too.

Personally I'd be more tempted to go Ranger, but that's more about the bad-ass attitude as a character, assuming he's independent, not a lover of conversation, and skillful.

A mounted halfling can actually be seriously mean because their mounts are medium creatures and therefore can fit in dungeon crawls and things. There's nothing like a halfling mounted on an armoured St Bernard barreling down a corridor at you with a lance to make dungeon denizens think "I should've stayed in bed this morning." Get a fighter, take the mounted combat feat and then take ride-by-attack, spirited charge and trample and go nuts. If you get a pony you could also get it horseshoes of speed and become a really dangerous shock-trooper.

Then once you've got those you can grab combat expertise and start taking the improved trip and improved disarm feats, they can really, really annoy DMs, especially if you pick up a reach weapon like a Spiked Chain.

I'd go Barbarian.. It's just too cool to see a little halfling just standing there one moment.. and seeing him rip your stomach open with foam from the mouth the second.. It increases the badass effect and is just so cool (I love Talenta Plains halflings.. w00t :P)

In the Eberron campaign setting the Talenta halflings are known as savages and most of their warriors are barbarians.. a saying my NPC's use a lot in my campaign is "kicking a halfling" which is used mostly when something goes wrong when you didn't expect it to. Kinda like when you kick a halfling for fun and he suddenly turns out to be a frenzied berserker :P

In your face fighter - go barbarian, every time.

Mounted fighter? Ranger with a riding dog as your animal companion will do nicely, or a Paladin Halfling would make people sit up and take nottice.

Flanking damage-disher? Rogue/Ranger with TWF and a pair of daggers will do oodles of damage.

Swashbuckler could also work nicely and make the most of your dex.

Scout actually works well as a fighting concept, and again gives you a movement boost.

Psychic Warrior would be fun ... a mere halfling (uses Enlarge on self) ... not any more!

I would suggest Improved Grapple as you're going to need to hedge your bet against the "Large Creature Grapple Small Creature: Game Over" situations.

Nothing more humiliating then being Halfling-napped by an Owlbear.

If the CW is open to you get close quarters combat, then gut anything that tries to hug you

I personally would go with Swordsage, or at least grab the Martial Study feat a few times to pick up some Setting Sun Maneuvers, like the throws. Then pick up the stance that lets you act as if you are one size bigger and you should be able to throw anything up to Large size. Big Bad Orge walks up and WOOPS goes flying through the air:D very fun indeed

Personally, I'd go barbarian. Especially if you wanted to be lightly armoured. A Dragon mag I have (sorry, can't remember issue#, I'll see if I can find it) Had some halfling barbarian substitution levels. There's some good bonuses to indimidate, and one of them makes you considered medium size for tripping and grappling. That's one scary halfling!:D

If your DM allows you to take the Improved Natural Attack from the Monster Manual, then I say halfling monk (just to be different than what's above). If you go this route, I also suggest Weapon Finesse.
