I need some help with this one PC that I'm playing with. On an adventure into this castle, he comes across, among other things, a set of magic earrings, which I eventually ID as Earrings of Intellect +2. Initially, I paid the 2 guys that found it 25gp each, at their request, to which I heartily agreed. Just as the session was ending though, the guy was saying how he would very likely steal the earrings back while I'm sleep.

I want to know how to foil his attempts. Intelligence is important to me, as I'm playing a Psion, while he is playing an Artificer, which I believe "casts" off of Charisma. So because of that, I feel he is doing it mainly to screw over me, or my character. I'm not really sure which, or even if it's only one of us he's screwing.

Remember that grudges can take a long time to fulfill. If he steals the item, remember it. When the time is right exact your revenge(I normally allow the player to die, by inaction on my part, depends on what alignment I play though)

Artificers cast off of Intelligence, but their most often used class skill, Use Magic Device, uses Charisma.

What's he gonna do? Paint them a different color and hope you never use detect magic near him ever again? And I sure hope he's chaotic neutral, neutral evil, or chaotic evil if he's thinking about stealing from you.

Actually, I believe almost all of the party is Chaotic Neutral, with myself being Chaotic Good, and one of the beatsticks of the party is either Lawful Good or Lawful Neutral. As for the grudge, the guy just better watch out when I start DM'ing again. He is a recent addition to the group, and has not been a part of the group when I was DM'ing. As they say, 'payback is a *****'.

Whatever you do don't take it out on him when you're DMing. That's a general no no.
Take it out on him now.

Those of you who are irritated by messages in all capital letters should skip this post.

NEVER EVER ALLOW IN CHARACTER CONFLICT TO BECOME OUT OF CHARACTER CONFLICT OR VICE VERSA

It's immature, solves nothing, and only serves to **** everyone off (including you).

Wear cheap fake ones to sleep, and get the party to blame him when they break in his hands. xD

Talk to the player and request that he not have his character steal them. Players need to actively work to ensure that there is not only harmony (even if it is less than perfect) between characters but also harmony between players. By actively stealing from another character he is potentially ruining the harmony of both groups. Two things to consider are whether or not this thief would really be adventuring with people or to consider whether or not your character would be adventuring with such a thief.

Now, in game, do you have access to healing on a daily basis? If so, you could cut open your arm or leg or wherever at night, put earrings in cut, and then heal the wound. Then, repeat the process in the morning when you wake up. Or, and this may qualify as a mature topic, wrap them in an oiled cloth and stick them in a lower region orifice. I don't think there is a thief alive who would want to go there, and if so and if they were able to get them, then they would definitely have earned the right to steal the items in question. Another option is to tie a string around them, tie the other end of the string around a tooth in your mouth, and swallow the earrings. Then, in the morning, with a little bit of gaggin, pull them back out, rinse them off, and put them back on.

But, I think my first bit of advice is the way to go.

If he can easily steal them why you sleep shouldn't you be more worried about him killing you in your sleep?
Seriously, how do you guys work together if you can't trust each other? Maybe you should bring the other PC's address the issue-after all if he steals from one PC he might steal from all the others! Now with the group on your side and against him he better behave! ;)

For one thing, you could refrain from screwing him.

"Hi Joe The Thief. You know those earrings you sold me? We agreed that 25gp was a fair price, but my identify spell has revealed they're Earrings of Intellect +2, and that we could sell them for around 2000 gold. So how about I make up for it by giving you the other 1975gp when we find enough treasure?"

QFT.
This would be obvious in-game, but tends to get ignored out-of-game.

Treat him fairly. You will have less worries.

Perhaps you should consider dividing all the treasure up at the end next time, after identification and asseying. (The cost for which can be taken out of the total before division).

Well, as far as treasure has gone so far in this camp, I've been totally shafted. I'm playing a Psion, and all my treasure has been consumable, and most of THAT were scrolls that I can't use. Also, the artificer snagged 2 pricey bits from the first dungeon crawl, and when I got the earrings, snagged another different peace too. I think it has to do with his man RPG experience coming from WOW.

As for the 1950gp profit ( I payed 25gp to TWO characters), I consider that fair, given I had to pay for them in the first place.

Cut the earing in half and then you can each have a fair share.

(This joke is going to be far to obscure probably... oh well. Hopefully someone finds it funny.)

Whatever you do, don't metagame when he steals them. Play it out, discover things, hell...if it's in Eberron, hire a Master Inquisitive to come and search the premises and help you find the blackguard. Point is, don't let him get off easy. As they say--

"Yesss...use your aggressive nature boy! Strike without mercy, do not hesitate, and your transformation to the dark side will be COMPLETE." =P Seriously...own him. Or, just stop making things for him. You're the artificer...what's he gonna do?

He's the psion. The would be thief is the artificer. Which begs the question: Why doesn't he just craft a pair for himself?

How does your psion know he's going to steal them? Did your character catch his character scheming about it, or did you hear him scheming about it?

If it's the latter, you're metagaming, and the appropriate action is to do nothing, since your character has no knowledge of the plan, and unless he has reason to believe this man is untrustworthy, has no reason not to trust him.

And if he does have reason to believe this guy is untrustworthy, it calls into question: Why is your psion adventuring with someone that he does not trust?

Also, I agree with reversefigure4. Stop screwing people over.

For that matter, he's an artificer ... how the **** did he not know what they were in the first place? :)

Well, I'm gonna be retiring said Psion, because that characters alignment is clashing with the party. I am the only one even attempting to maintain a good alignment, whilst everyone else is either evil, or on their way their. Heck, with how this last session went, everyone is on their way to Chaotic Stupid.

I'll likely roll up a chaotic evil crusader, unless of course my DM nerfs ToB material, in which case, I'll play a clone of Riddick.

One if you have a room in the castle it should have a lock on it, try that and chair under the handle or something heavy in front of it.

Two if you don't have a room to your self have one of your party mate take watch. Act like you are in the field and when this thief come deal with him then.

Just ind him first kill him and get rid of the body.

You'd be surprised how many people stare at me blankly when I quote something out of the bible.

Every player should bear these words of wisdom in mind: "…however little we may like or trust each other, we're on the same crew. Got the same troubles, same enemies and more than enough of both. Now we could circle each other and growl, both sleep with one eye open but that thought wearies me. I don't care what you've done. I don't know what you're planning on doing, but I'm trusting you. I think you should do the same, cause I don't see this working any other way."

Rule -1 (precedes rule 0): The PCs don't need to like each other, but they need to find a way to function as a party.

Inter-party conflict is fine, inner=party conflict that negatively affects the enjoyment of the game is not.

Ok, just let him steal them. They're just little +2 intel earings, and if he does steal them it will give your character "motivation".

Besides, you're a psion, when they go missing just "Mind Scan" (I can't remember names of powers that let you do this) the entire party to see who did it. When you find out it was him don't tell anyone, don't let anyone know you're doing this.

When he is sleeping a week later, just telepathically move people's gear into his tent, and than wait for the fun to start in the morning (I suggest not using a tent, and not telling him where you are going to sleep (Hide off somewhere) or he might try to frame you framing him.

In the morning watch the chaotic-neutral self-centered people go, "you took my gear? Ok now I know I have a fireball spell for you......"

Er, you guys count consumables against your share of the loot? Um, why??? The only time consumables should count as part of your share is when theyre used strictly for your own benefit, say on a side job forinstance. If theyre used for party benefit then they should cost you nothing.
