our group recently started Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil, with a slight alteration due to a previous attempt's TPK at the start.

The DM switched out the moat house entrance white(?) dragon for a Dire lion. And (before we knew this) I had decided to try a druid so:

Me (Getting initiative) : Can I use wild empathy to stop it jumping us?
(Discussion & rules check ensues) : No, it takes a minute per attempt. You'll have been eaten by then.
*Flash of insight & double checks my prepared spells* : Ok, can I use charm animal?
*Again, a brief rule check due to lack of experience* Yes.
*Lion fails save*
Can I improve my disposition with it normally so when the spell expires it stays my friend?
DM : Yes, as it's not going to understand it's been charmed.
Me : (several successful WE checks later gave me "helpful" (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/diplomacy.htm)) Can I keep it?
DM : O.O .... No. It won't attack you later, but no. (we got xp for overcoming the encounter - on pretty much round 1, initiative 1)

Which almost led to an interesting situation with the hidden wizard later :P

(Darn, would have made a good friend for my black bear :( )

Any one else got any funny anecdotes to share?

When I ran RttToEE, the PC hobbit wizard managed to accidentally off himself with a bead of force.

The entire party decided it would be really cool to give him one of those viking funerals where you put the corpse on a boat with all his stuff, set it on fire and push it out to sea (in this case, the moat pond).
So, they describe everything they're doing, and what they're saying, and then, "we pour some oil over him, set him alight, and push him into the water."
I say:
"Okay, he sizzles, extinguishes, and sinks to the bottom."

They had completely forgotten the "boat" part.

We had a similar experience in one of our games. A friend of the DM was only going to be in town for a few days, so he created a Ranger/Druid one-shot character. We had to take a boat through a swamp to get somewhere, and when we turned to go back to town, a snake of some sort had taken up residence in our boat. One Wild Empathy check later, we had our boat back and the snake was on its way to find someplace else to coil up.
