Here's a character concept i came up with a few hours ago with help from my friend Dragon magazine.

A wizard who specializes in going into old ruins and recovering old artifacts (not the magic items) and magic items and spells/arcaen lore, think indiana jones, but a wizard.

For PrCs i figure fatespinner would be a decent choice and geomancer. Both make sense with the fluff

a level in rogue or bard (or a similar skill based class) could help, but i am unsure what would be best.

unfortunatly for spells and feats i'm limited to core, PrCs are most likley ok, i've access to complete arcane, adventurer and warrior, MH, PGtF, FRCS, races and magic of FR, and underdark, the SRD and ToM (maybe)

Loremaster seemed appropos at first glance, but i'm looking for less of a "sit in a library and research old archives" chracter and more of a brash, impatient, flashy chracter, which makes me think loremaster wouldn't quite fit.

Can anyone help?

The Extreme Explorer from the Eberron Campaign Setting is PERFECT for that.

Alternately, if you can tweak the concept to make an Illumian, the Loredelver from Races of Destiny is another fine fit, though it's a bit of a bear to qualify for.

With what you've got, perhaps the Dungeon Delver from Complete Adventurer?

Personally, a simple fluff change on the Arcane Trickster would make something that, mechanically, is exactly what you're after without too severely damaging your casting ability.

Most of the trap disabling, appraising, and treasure finding of the rogue, but with a decent wizard casting selection.

Bard actually works well for this kind of concept too - they have the skills for all the Knowledge you need unless you have an uber-Int score. Even 1 level of bard (the 1st) is handy for this. Plus do not underestimate Bardic Knowledge ... and for a perform skill, take Oratory. It was actually quite commonly taught at universities up until the 20th century as an essential for delivering lectures.

An adventurous Archiver (Heroes of Horror, I believe) might fit the bill. ;)
Sure, they cast Divine spells (not Arcane), but they cast them from tomes/books, etc... in a manner very similar to a Wizard... and they have nifty splashes akin to Loremaster built right in. :)

Furthermore, your standard Articifer (Eberron Campaign book) could work quite well for this concept.

Neither of those options sacrifice their casting progression (which is handy).

I agree, Arcane Trickster - with a little change to the "fluff" description - would fit well... as would Bard (for that mixed feel of arcane casting and skill use).

Extreme Explorer, though totally the Indiana Jones type, only really works in campaigns such as Eberron, that utilize action points. ...in a game without action points, they're pretty worthless.

Dungeon Delver fits the flavor, but you'd lose out on a fair bit of casting progression... but that's your call. :)

Exactly what I wanted to say. Archivist is pretty cool. It's indeed from HoH, a pretty good book, so you might think about buying or borrowing it for it has some nice rules and advice for horror-flavoured encounters and campaigns as well as some cool crunch. And no, unfortunately I don't get money for telling you this.
