| Saurenda11-11-04, 04:21 PM | Before I start I will mention that there is no other way for me to play alive DnD game regularly, and that I am not looking for answers in terms of "Just leave the group, thats the best option." I have currently found a gaming group. Not the best mind you, and not the best players. But the DM is great. We Play in our campaign setting just fine. No need to mention which. The problem is the players. they have a difficult time staying focused and staying in game. They often pull out other character sheets and drift off with dreams of illegeal characters, as well as Sit there doing nothing. We have a half orc with all max stats. He is played by a retarded young man who does nothing in the group. I myself was against letting people pick thier own stats, but the DM insisted they play characters they loved. Everyone it seems expect for me has 18 charisma. I play a favored soul str 14 con 15 dex 14 wis 13 int 11 cha 16 I also came up with a total backstory and a reason for my character to adventure. I as well am often justifying my Charisma by interacting witht eh PCs and NPCS. I a personw ith lower charisma convinced a 6th level wizard to join me , a level 3 favored soul. It took two whole session of subquesting and convincing but I worked hard for her. The others sit there and literally do nothing. It's gotten annoying to wher eI and the NPCs are advancing the plot. Teh DM refuses to take action. He is goading me into takign action because he lacks a job and in entertained by how the PCs interact, and the game twice a week is all the entertainment he has. He wants me to explode at them from the general feeling I've gotten, or he merely wants to remain neutral and let us handle our own problems. We have a half drow ranger, and she with her 18 charisma never talks to anyone who doesn't talk to her first; which is fine. But she doesn't even play a ranger well. She never scouts, I have to suggest it to her. A cleric who wants to fight and never actually earn experience in terms of finding amble challanges. He wants to randomly wander and fight monsters. Without cause. A Fighter who thinks he is a secret agent and never tells the group what he is doing. The group excluded me fromt eh main plot of the game. so I in my actiosn isntead of getting angry befriended a level 6 wizard they also shunned and made good friends with people by being open and honest with the NPCs. They didn't seem to get any hints and thier continued ignorance annoys me. I am currently going to speak to them tomorrow. There is literally nothign good to say. All the work of the campgin is falling to me. Everyone else is level 5 , yet I am level 3. I've also noticed the general lack of degrees and intelligence in the area. They do not seem to fond of the fact I had introduced myself as a college guy, in the master program of my chosen major. They seem more interested in rolepalying characters that do nothing. What smore our fighter thinsk he is a good leader and has gotten us nearly killed 3 time sin one session if not for me and my wizard NPC friend. Please, can anyone tell me what I can try to tell them? I tried reaosning before, but no one seems to want to listen. =( I enjoy this character so much and it seems I'm the one who is slow in terms of the settings trather than they simply because they've played for a months worth of time. I'm confused, and worried. Why do they not improve? |
| Avalongod11-11-04, 04:41 PM | How is it that you are still level 3 and they are level 5 if you have done all the work. Sounds like some of the problem might be with the DM. Sounds like this group might be a bad match for you. Hang in there, but keep looking for a new one, as frustrating as it can be. |
| Magnus02911-11-04, 08:30 PM | "Just leave the group, thats the best option." This is the best option. I have currently found a gaming group. Not the best mind you, and not the best players. But the DM is great. We Play in our campaign setting just fine. No need to mention which. The problem is the players. The Problem is both the players and the DM. The DM may know how to tell a story but from this instance here, can't run a game. they have a difficult time staying focused and staying in game. They often pull out other character sheets and drift off with dreams of illegeal characters, as well as Sit there doing nothing. There is no such thing as an illegal character. That said I feel your pain on the not staying focused and looking over old character sheets, the players in my group do they same. I'm confused, and worried. Why do they not improve? Truth be told some people play the game others play the numbers and the dice. I play the game for better or worse. When it comes to groups the one I have is way less than perfect but they have there not to bad days. I would look for another group or consider email, online chat or post games. As I mentioned in the beginning I think the credit you give the DM is premature, He is more of a problem than you think. |
| Seradec11-12-04, 11:30 AM | [QUOTE=Saurenda] We have a half orc with all max stats. QUOTE] I hate limiting how high stats something can have, limitation is the complete opposite of what the designers of the game aimed to achieve |
| Thoronmir11-12-04, 12:05 PM | If you’re not having fun, the best option is to leave. Even if it means not playing for a while. I’d rather spend that time working on my next campaign or developing interesting back-stories for future characters than wallow along with the group you described. I understand completely your point about the “burden” of the campaign falling on you. If you’re the only player who remains focused during play, whether the group lives or dies and succeeds or fails will rest on your decisions. Unfortunately, it sounds like the DM doesn’t reward you for that effort. There are as many opinions about how to play D&D as there are players. It may be that the rest of your group (including the DM) are playing exactly how they think the game ought to be played. If so, this isn’t the group for you. |
| Xarian11-12-04, 02:03 PM | If they're all having fun and you're the one having the problem - who's driving who crazy? Honestly it sounds like you're making the trouble for yourself. Quit the group if you don't like it - yelling at them isn't going to do anything other than make them dislike you more. It sounds like you're a little full of yourself anyway. You apparently know how to play all of their characters better than they do... |
| danielinthewolvesden11-12-04, 02:29 PM | First of all, please do us a favor- use the edit button and fix your post, please. Lead by example. Talk to the DM, and say that if likes your playing perhaps a few "bonus xps" would galvanize the rest into playing better. I am going to guess that you are level 3 since the DM started you a couple levels behind the group which had been playing for awhile? |
| Lincoln Hills11-12-04, 05:59 PM | From what I'm hearing, the root of this problem is actually the DM. This 'unemployed' (what does that have to do with the issue?) gent seems utterly indifferent to anything that happens in his campaign. Doesn't care waht stats are used, doesn't care what any of the characters do. Why is he sitting at the head of the table if he doesn't have anything in mind? Fine. Tell 'em that you want to run a single adventure as DM, and exploit your superior knowledge to make that adventure challenging. Design pre-fab characters (tell them, "You can't bring your regular characters - you wouldn't like the 'editing' necessary to make 'em fit." This is true, cos these guys have been spoiled rotten - if you reduce one of their 18s to a 17, they will unleash the Whine of the Gamer.) Make sure the adventure is easier if they interact with certain NPCs rather than simply blasting: and make sure the adventure cannot succeed without the use of each character's skills - another advantage of pre-fab characters. If their rogue doesn't check for traps, their ranger doesn't try tracking, their mage doesn't try a well-timed dispel magic in spite of the scroll you included in his starting equipment... look, the point is, it might shake up some of the behavior that seems to be troubling you. |
| October_Darkness11-13-04, 03:50 AM | I find it hard to believe that someone working for their masters degree would have such bad spelling. Whatever, you continue to stick around players you dislike. I think it's pretty obvious that there's a consensus among the other people here...... you need to go. If you don't like the people you hang out with, that's your choice by what actions you take. If you absolutely must tell them how you feel, at least do it in a professional way. People easily become defensive when it comes to constructive criticism. If you have already done this after my post, disregard. -Steve |
| hopoate!!!11-13-04, 10:37 AM | Just for my own curiosity, what is the average age of the players? |
| Shard of Suzail11-13-04, 06:54 PM | The group cant be fixed with issues like that going on. The magic answer you seek does not exist. Move on to pastures new and find a superior group. |
| a18ffe11-15-04, 11:26 AM | You need to start up your own campaign. Seriously. Invite the few good apples from the tree and leave. Xarian is right. Nobody is going to care about your rant. Trust me. I've played in many groups. The non-conformist usually leaves, and it's probably for the best. Either that or loosen up. It seem that you are the heavy rp type, but most people are there to hang out and have fun. IMO, that is more important. |
| Avalongod11-15-04, 11:56 AM | I find it hard to believe that someone working for their masters degree would have such bad spelling. In the era of MS Word, good speling is know longer a requament of gradooate degreas. I have a Ph.D. and still kant spell too good. Gramma is a problim two. |

Heh :) Actually I talked to the Dm and I am now getting bonus exp after the game when everyone else is busy packing up. And yes I did started a new campagin, and I invited all these people to play. It's interesting seeing them on the other side of the table. One character asked to do over her scene with the party catching her red handed stealing something. I just laughed at her. It certainly does get my in good spirits to see the things they do in a different point of view, now the former DM is having the same troubles. BTW thank you all who responded, and those who judged on the spelling matter, I was quite upset when I wrote it, and no I will not go back and edit it. As for beign full of myself I am. I am not going to a game once a week to sit there and do other people's work for them, I do something I want something for it. Yes good decent people of the boards, I am an experience *****. :D |
