I was considering making my next character a cleric of Cthulhu or maybe one of the other Lovecraftian creations, like maybe Yog-Sothoth or (if I play sociopathically, Hastur :D ). The problem I ran into was what domains would the deities of the Lovecraftian pantheon grant? Suggestions for any of them are welcome. Thanks for your help.

Madness, evil, slaughter and summoning. The final just because all followers of the elder gods should HAVE to take alienist...

In the Cthulhu Mythos, you don't cast spells....spells cast you (into the Outer Darkness where you are slowly consumed over the millenia by the seething forces of Chaos surrounding you as the uncaring god Azothoth chuckles cruelly at your presumptuousness). :coolcthul

You might check out Call of Cthulhu D20. It has a lot of CoC stuff converted over to D&D terms. I'm not sure off hand if it has domains for clerics of the various Great Old Ones, but it might. I'll try to remember to check tonight when I get home.

Try Lords of Madness, it mentions how you can change the name of some of the Aboleth gods (Elder Evils, they aren't really gods and don't grant spells, but meh) to make them Lovecraft gods (Cthulhu, Azathoth, etc.) But most importantly of all it has new domains for the crazy aberration gods which definitely fit. The new domains are Corruption, Hatred, Madness, Mind, and Vile Darkness.

For actual elder gods ?

None of them care about followers, save to hasten their summoning and rise, when the stars are right.

Cross off the spell section on the sheet, and add 3 derangements. Then realize that "summon Cthulhu" does not come with a "bind Cthulhu" included ;)

You don't need to be able to bind Cthulthu if you can summon him near something you want made dead and you can run reeeeealy fast.

Play a sorcerer who thinks he is a cleric. An actual humaniod "Cleric" of a Lovecraftian god would get no spells or abilities from said god. You are too pathetic to be noticed, let alone empowered.

You don't need to be able to bind Cthulthu if you can summon him near something you want made dead and you can run reeeeealy fast. This reminds me of something my Human Ranger once said after our Plate-Armored Dwarf Fighter decided it would be a good idea for our party to lure a Dragon from its lair by getting it to "chase" us ... then our Rogue could loot the place. When our Cleric protested that "We can't outrun a Dragon!" (she was right), my Ranger pointed out, "We don't have to outrun the Dragon, we just have to outrun the Dwarf."

If you're serious about this, I'd follow Nyat's advice.

Okay, recently I had to do some quick design for a very Cthulu-like entity endemic to Greyhawk (no, it was not Tharizdun: he's got stats aplenty for HIS priesthood). So here's my advice on domains (and, in a way, RP.)

Law. Not because It is necessarily lawful, but because It can be constrained to act on mortal behalf only through ritual and order (imposing a form on the Formless). With a lax DM you might even be able to get his permission to take this domain without being yourself Lawful.

Summoning. Not a 3.0 domain - to my sorrow - but a good one for such gods. Rather than apply the pseudonatural template, simply stick with the most freakish and disturbing critters you can summon. With your DM's permission, you could use the CRs you find in summon monster and summon nature's ally to create a unique summon unspeakable things set of tables.

Healing. Not good, shiny, sun-in-the-sky happy-kittens healing: no, we're talking the seeping tumorous unnatural life which lives on long after it should die. For flavor, I'd go either with spells that have the odd side effect of leaving "skin grafts" that don't look appropriate to your species... or healing spells that restore hp without causing the closure of any wounds or the disappearance of any injuries. ("My God! How can he still be alive??")

Death. Well, duh.
