| ktulu0605-15-06, 12:22 PM | Ok. I'm pretty new to DnD, and i've got the basic v3.5 set, but i think there is a thing missing form the character creation pages. No matter how many times i look through it, I can't seem to find how to figure out AC. I jst need a basic equation from anyone who wants to help out a noob. Ta! |
| geekling05-15-06, 12:31 PM | Armor Class Your Armor Class (AC) represents how hard it is for opponents to land a solid, damaging blow on you. It’s the attack roll result that an opponent needs to achieve to hit you. Your AC is equal to the following: 10 + armor bonus + shield bonus + Dexterity modifier + size modifier Note that armor limits your Dexterity bonus, so if you’re wearing armor, you might not be able to apply your whole Dexterity bonus to your AC. Read more (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/combatStatistics.htm#armorClass) Also note that Flat footed AC is your AC without the DEX, and touch your AC with no armour or shield bonuses. |
| atog_eater05-15-06, 12:31 PM | read the caracter sheet at the back of the book. medium size mod is zero, small is +1, large is -1, keep changing by one for each size catagory. |
| ktulu0605-15-06, 12:43 PM | Yeah I don't have the proper player's handbook, just the Advanced rulebook from the basic game so ther isnt the proper character sheet, just a simplified version. Thanks alot guys. But just one thing. my friend rolled up a drow fighter with 20 dex which makes the AC 20 ( chain shirt + heavy shield ). Is this useable? It just seems a bit high and almost indestructable at lvl 1. Any Thoughts? |
| hmmmm05-15-06, 12:53 PM | Yes it is useable as long as it is within the rules. |
| Salty_Boy05-15-06, 12:54 PM | Any Thoughts? He's one wealthy Son of a Spider Queen if he can afford both a chain shirt and a Heavy Shield at level 1. You might want to cross-reference the starting equipment against starting GP levels. |
| ktulu0605-15-06, 12:55 PM | Ok thanks for the help guys. |
| geekling05-15-06, 01:03 PM | But just one thing. my friend rolled up a drow fighter with 20 dex which makes the AC 20 ( chain shirt + heavy shield ). 20 DEX = +5 Chainshirt = +4, max dex +4 Heavy shield = +2 10 +4 + 4 + 2 = AC 20 That's correct assuming that he hasn't fudged anything, as Salty_boy points out regarding starting gold. |
| darkness ninja of light05-15-06, 01:05 PM | I don't know HOW your friend got to play a drow, but indeed your friend's drow is not according to the rules. Of course, I don't know what the new basic 3.5 game is like (I had the old 3.0 one though) so I'm not sure which rules were simplified. 1. Drow are a "level adjustment" (LA) race. They have LA +2. This means that the race itself is so powerful that a level 1 drow fighter would be equivalent to a (let's say) level 3 human fighter. You can't play them at level 1 unless you take many of their racial abilities away. 2. I don't think Drow have a +2 Dex so perhaps he is just using an elf saying its a drow. A 20 in Dex is very powerful at first level, but if your friend rolled an 18 and put it into dex, then indeed it would be according to the rules. 3. A chain shirt is 100gp, right? It's possible to get those at level 1 too, but it wouldn't leave much gold for anything else (depending on the class the drow is, of course). Make sure your friend is using the proper amount of gold. 4. It's still a high AC, but he can still get hit while flat footed (rogues attack!) and when hit by touch spells as well as by some lucky melee/ranged shots. |
| ktulu0605-15-06, 01:07 PM | That looks right, The natural 18 is the thing in question though, because I wasn't there when he "rolled it up" ;) Edit: See, I knew something was up when he told me that he was gonna play as a drow, this is what he's like, he reads things, and the things he doesn't understand he'll ignore, obviously he ignored the LA |
| geekling05-15-06, 01:12 PM | Mind you if it's a campain starting at level one.... What about the LA +2 for drow? You are aware that he's basically starting with a level 3 character while the rest of you are level one? Edit: doh! darkness ninja of light already brought up the LA. :) Just ignore this reply. |
| stargate52505-15-06, 01:33 PM | Also note that Flat footed AC is your AC without the DEX, and touch your AC with no armour or shield bonuses. Touch is also without any natural armor bonuses. (handy for dragons and such.) |
| hmmmm05-15-06, 01:35 PM | I don't think that I would let him play that as it is unfair to the other players. |
| geekling05-15-06, 01:49 PM | Touch is also without any natural armor bonuses. (handy for dragons and such.) True but that rearely comes up with low level PCs. |
| Trill_the_Ranger05-16-06, 01:29 AM | something to consider when playing an odd race as your character is that it is harder for them to leve up is it not?....say the drow is the same power as a 3rd lvl human fighter....doesn't that mean to get to lvl 2 he needs to get XP = to the amount it is need for lvl 4?.......thats how my interpretation of the LA goes...maybe im wrong though? |

Guess what? Your Right! Yay! He would need level 4 XP, which is yet another disadvantage to a LA. Tell him to use a different elf, like sky or high elf. there are more in The SRD. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/elf.htm) Enjoy! |
| General_Ridley05-16-06, 08:39 PM | the drow ability bonuses listed in the MM are in addition to the -2 con and +2 Dex of the High elf. so yes, drow have +2 Dex |
| darkness ninja of light05-17-06, 08:28 AM | the drow ability bonuses listed in the MM are in addition to the -2 con and +2 Dex of the High elf. so yes, drow have +2 Dex Ah that's right. I forgot about that. |
