| Viperious06-19-06, 09:35 PM | Though most of time I've noticed players not hindering their characters so much as to negate one of their senses, what if one has been? I was contemplating running a character similar to Montolio from R. A. Salvatore's books. The problem with doing so is I can't find much to help lessen the penalties for being blind. Does anyone have any suggestions to help my character creation? |
| Nor'Morgwae06-19-06, 10:01 PM | I considered making a blind character too, some time ago. The best I have been able to find is blind fighting followed by 'Blindsight 5' radius' (Dieties and Demigods, Sword and Fist) 'Blindsight' (Masters of the Wild) 'Blindsense' (Complete Adventurer) Unfortunatly the Complete Adventurer feat is the only 3.5 one. I guess the others were considered over powered. I hacd considered useing Blindsight 5' radius for my character. But it has a prereq. of BAB +4 and a 19 wis requirement. Not an easy feat to qualify for at low level. That's about all the help I can offer. |
| BluEnigma06-19-06, 11:09 PM | In a game I DM'd, there was one experienced D&D player there, playing a psion, along with 4-5 new players. His character was pretty much going to kill everything- so I told him his character was blind. He actually seemed to enjoy the challenge- he found a psionic manifestation that allowed him to "feel" light, or something like that, along with some good listen skills. Of course, is was even more fun when he kept his character blinded: "You hear the sound of hooves coming from the road behind you." "ROBBERS!" *turns around and blasts a LG paladin, a NG cleric, and their horse* |

| SokenzanMarauder06-20-06, 01:53 AM | In the Arms and Equipment guide there was a headband you could wear that gives Blindsense 60ft. Costs like 30,000 gp. Very nice for this kind of character, I played a blind psion once as well, with the headband of course. -Gene |
| Viperious06-20-06, 01:59 AM | Only problem is another thing I want to use for the character. Basically the character is a blind, poor, hermit that in his solitude has unlocked powers of the body and mind. The character will use monk, psion, and ranger and the campaign is using gestalt rules. Since the campaign has already started (current character is fixing to die) the new character will be level 11. Also to take advantage of being poor I was going to make him either C/G or N/G and use Vow of Poverty. |

Basically you take a move action to sense the location of all creatures within 20 feet touching hte ground, though since you can't pinpoint thier location, you'd need to have Blindfight still. It's a start at least. If you can get one, take a Bat as a familiar. Your bat will have 60ft blindsense, and can convey limited information to you via your empathic link. It's not perfect, but if there an angry man sneaking up on you with a knife you'll at least get "Danger! Behind!" or something similar from your familiar. |
| Dag06-20-06, 08:41 AM | Awww geez. Not another 'I want a blind character' thread, where the blind character expects the DM to invent or pull from silly splat books cheese whizz feats or powers to compensate for your character's blindness. She's blind. Take blind fighting or go see a 5th level cleric and have the blindness removed. Why do these blind types always insist on abilities and special powers that give their blind dudes abilities that make them superior to people who can actually see? If it was supposed to work that way the entire campaign world would be ripping their eyes out so they could gain some silly blind sense as easily as they might gain some common feat. If you expect all this nonsense to make up for blindness don't expect it 'til later levels, so you'll have to suffer through the low levels as a blind and mostly useless member of the party before being able to sense a flying moth at 50 paces once you get at higher levels and start getting heaped with these silly abilities to more than make up for a lack of sight. Don't you people ever look through previous posts? This blind character thing seems to come up like once every two months like clockwork - maybe that's why my response is a bit sour. I hope WoC is paying attention to all this attention to blind characters - maybe they can come up with the complete Blind Adventurer's handbook, judging by these boards there are plenty who will shell out 30 bucks for it. Why not make it core? |
| Millennium06-20-06, 10:15 AM | There are no feats which completely negate blindness. You can of course take Blind-Fighting and such to help some, but they're not cure-alls, nor should they really be. In a world where so many things depend on sight, blindness is a handicap. It doesn't make most things truly impossible, but it does make a lot of things more difficult. If you want to play a blind character, then you need to be prepared to live with that, because, well, blind people live with that. |
| Balseraph06-20-06, 10:29 AM | Awww geez. Not another 'I want a blind character' thread, where the blind character expects the DM to invent or pull from silly splat books cheese whizz feats or powers to compensate for your character's blindness. Don't you people ever look through previous posts? This blind character thing seems to come up like once every two months like clockwork - maybe that's why my response is a bit sour. I apologize immediately if it might seem that I am quoting out of context by not quoting your entire post, Dag. I assure you that I'm drawing out only the parts that I intend to comment upon, and not to misrepresent your statement. First: I'd love to play a blind character at some time. I don't want special consideration or feats or powers or anything. If I wanted to compensate for the lack of vision, I'd play a psion who can get powers to alleviate the problem. I'd just like to roleplay a character with such an integral disability. (By the way, I'd also like to apologize to any blind people reading this, for any insensitivity ;) ) I can even imagine that I could play most of the session, if not all, with my eyes closed to get into the feel of the concept (and nod off to sleep when the DM is talking :P). Second: The above view does certainly seem to be a small minority. A lot of people seem to have the "I'm blind so I should be special" mindset. They're right of course. They are special, they are unable to see in a party of characters who likely all can see. The potential for interchanges between player characters alone is amazing! p.s. There's always advantage/disadvantage systems to play. "I'm blind, deaf, mute, am a brain in a jar, and have six months to live. Due to all that, I am of course the greatest psychic the world has ever seen." Hehehe. |
