In the campaign I'm currently playing in, me and another party member got seperated from the group when we, um, died. :embarrass So the DM played a mini-adventure with me and this party member. We go over to his house and discover some interesting changes on our character sheets. We've turned undead!

Mechanically what this means is that we now have extra strength and dexterity, reduced intelligence, and no constitution score. We've also got +2 natural armour, 5 extra natural attacks (four claws, two hand and two foot, which do 1d4 damage, and a bite that does 1d6 and 1d2 con), and all the undead features. Oh, and +2 LA.

In-game, this creates some rather worrying issues. He's a crusader (kind of a paladin / ranger) and I'm a priest (cleric), and we're both good. And in order to survive, we now have to eat a certain amount of flesh every day. A relatively high will save means we can stave the hunger off, but otherwise we're driven mad by it and run off to eat the nearest bleeding thing.

My question is, what would you do in this situation? We've tried to think of a tactic that allows us to stay alive without killing too many people, but all we can think of is eating suicidal/old/lonely people. Any other ideas?

Do you have to eat PEOPLE, or can you just hunt animals? If you can, then you're just an Undead carnivore, which isn't as bad... well, being Undead is probably an issue, but still, you get the idea.

Our DM's ruled that in order to survive on animals in the wild, we need Survival checks, which we're not very good at. Any more inventive ideas? :P

Perhaps you could quest to find rings of sustnance. I'm not quite sure if those would help stave off your hunger, but it might.

Buy lots of cows, chickens, dogs, etc.

Or, if you can't afford it, pillage the local livestock. Yeah, that's not nice, but would you rather eat the farmers or the farmers' livestock? You're gonna have to make a choice somewhere.

And, at least you know the BBEG's corpse won't go to waste. >:)

Oo, good point. I hadn't thought about buying lots of animals. Would I have to get feed for them, too?

"Goat. The Other Trail Ration."

As for rings of sustenance, that's another interesting idea- I'll have to clear that one with my DM.

Well, I imagine you'd want to get feed for them, but
a) animal feed is fairly cheap, if a bit of a pain in the ass to haul very far if you have any significant amount of it;
b) you're not exactly going to keep them long, are you? You only have to feed them long enough for you to eat them...

So I imagine that the feed issue is only one if you're planning on keeping the animals for any extended period of time (like if you're stocking up for a long journey, or if you're planning on retiring to a farmstead to live out your unlife raising livestock...)

Since you are a Cleric; Create Food and Water.
The spell that should save you.

Find the highest ranking priest of Pelor you can, and explain everything to him.

Then ask him to please turn you. This will effectively solve the problem.

If you are both "good" then this is the only solution.

If the DM turned my char into a Zombie I would crack people's heads open and eat their brains. When in Rome....

Or, while you're at it, Hero's Feast. Who said it couldn't be an entire smorgasbord of BBQ? :)

You think you have problems? My Paladin's been Polymorphed into a rat. At least a zombie has combat ability.

Though, admittedly, it's been amusing jumping off of walls at people's faces in a blinding fury of gnashy teethiness.

I know this has nothing to do with the thread itself, but I wanted to point out that it could be worse.

Hmm... undead that are starving to death. That's something you don't see every day! :D

Far as i can see, you have two options. If you still insist on trying to play 'good' characters, the do the honerable thing and end your undeath quickly and cleanly, ending your blasphemy and protecting those you might otherwise harm.

If living is more important that being good, the turn evil, and have some fun!

Wait a minute-
Zombies are mindless. Therefore you have no choice as to your actions. My solution would be to convince the DM to create a magic item that can turn undead into normal people. Then have your characters' twin siblings (statistically your characters before they died but with different names) go on a quest to FIND that magic item, and restore your characters to normal.

If you have trouble convincing your DM, wait until the DM takes a bathroom break. Grab every hardcover book in sight. Then hold them all directly over your DM's head. That should persuade him.

If that doesn't work, inform the DM that undead are now always evil. Convince him to let you become deathless instead. The deathless type is as follows (Source: Book of Exalted Deeds)

Like undead except:
Affected by energy drain
healed by positive energy and harmed by negative energy
Resurrection and true resurrection can return you to life
Evil clerics can turn you
Good clerics can rebuke (and command) you
Reverse negative/positive energy and good/evil effects on undead for deathless
Unaffected by spells and effects that have greater effect against undead, such as chill touch, sunbeam, disruption weapons
Do not breathe, eat, or sleep

Note: deathless are usually good

This could be an interesting game. Suggest a game in which your characters face off against vampire/lich clerics. Remember, they can turn you and you can turn them!

Evil Cleric: Turn Deathless!
Deathless Cleric: Turn Undead!

Have fun

If you want to roleplay a zombie, you really should be eating whatever comes by, preferebly their brains. Your character died, and you are merely the unholy husk that hungers for the flesh of the living.

I guess you are more of a George Romero always hungry zombie than a D&D zombie that can go for centuries without eating a thing, but never mind that.

For an experiment, I suggest biting a villager in a non-fatal fasion and see what happens to them. If you are a "Night of the living dead" type they will become a zombie in short order.

Undead doesnt mean mindless zombie. ie Mummies or Vampires :) and unless your DM actually rules that all undead are evil, your characters will probably strive to retain their humanity. Or embrace, but sounds like the striving is more you.

Form a cult based around you 2 designed solely on keeping you alive. Doesnt HAVE to be evil, but zealous servants are always nice to have. Surrounding yourself with poisonos creature is deffinatly secure since you will be unharmed.

Ooo, you could become the next BBEG, unitentionally initially, since it would be for survival. And you could, in the beginning, help your loyal followers. But transgressers will have to be punished, to protect yourself and your followers. And of course, human flesh tastes so much better. Best to make a show so others wont double cross you.

Oh boy, I love this kind of stuff. The good turned to evil due to uncontrolable circumstances is so much fun. Of course, this depends on your campaigns timeframe.

Cause remember, if your undead, you cant die. (by old age at least)
