| legolizard11-16-04, 06:57 PM | Im playing a githyanki wizard and want her to live past level 16. So what are peoples suggestions for hideing/fighting/destroying from the lichqueen. For those who don't know, All Githyanki are drained of there lifeforce at level 17 by the lichqueen that rules the race. those who run are hunted by eight seventeen level githyanki, killed and then soul bind is cast on them to gather the essence. It's nasty  Help! |
| malykoth11-16-04, 07:12 PM | There are a couple of ways you could go, depending on the direction the DM wants to take, but none of them are very simple. 1) Try to find some location out on the planes that is somehow warded against Vlaakith's divinations. Maybe a huge antimagic zone? Of course, you'd be trapped there, as no magical way to leave the plane would work. 2) Try to find an artifact level item to ward against detection. Getting your hands on such an item may be as difficult as...option 3. 3) Take on Vlaakith and bring that beeyyoch down! Good luck! |
| BloodGod11-16-04, 08:13 PM | You can try that jazz that malykoth said, but I don't think you'll win. Even if your group helped you fight them and you killed the eight, wouldn't another batch of 8 or more come for you? No matter what, you should've planned this out and been ready for it early on. You should've faced facts that at level 17 you may have to make a new character. Anyway. Good luck. -BG |
| malykoth11-16-04, 08:20 PM | Even if your group helped you fight them and you killed the eight, wouldn't another batch of 8 or more come for you? Well, there is a slim chance. After all, if they succeeded at actually subduing the first batch of assassins, they're sure to gain quite a bit of xp. Also, the next batch might not arrive immediately, so they could gain more xp through adventuring. Vlaakith might not catch on for a while...long enough for the players to gain enough xp, treasure and allies to finally take her out. Dragon #309 and Dungeon #100 are all about doing just such an adventure. I admit, the odds of survival are very small, but better to go out fighting. Also, since he's a wizard, he can burn off xp by making magic items, scrolls, etc. to stay below 17th, giving them to his allies (the other players) while they gain power (raise in levels)...the ultimate goal to take her out. It may be unsatisfying for the gith at first, but to finally have a hand in the destruction of the Lich Queen herself may be worth the sacrifice. |
| MortalPlague11-16-04, 08:52 PM | Another thought... you could use your wizard abilities to construct powerful magic items, serving two purposes; you would stay below the L17 marker, and you would become more powerful for when the time comes. Good luck. :) |

It's nasty  Help! As wizard you can get powerful without the need to level up. Hopefully you have some Item creation feat besides "Scribe scroll", or at least some powerful metamagics to use with scribe scroll. If so, then you can use your xp to make items crafted specially to protect you from the things you will have to face when you decide to reach level 17. Other thing you can do is to use various applications of permanency, not only on yourself but also on other party members. This will be very useful, and will cost only xp, of which you can spare as you wish. |
| strontium11-16-04, 09:16 PM | Depending on just how 'good' aligned you really are, you might consider creating a clone or some such, infused with stolen life force (possibly from of one of the assasins sent to get you) and set up a fake attack in which you are seen to be caught, killed and soul drained. Dont know that much about the litchqueen but it might work. If she thinks your dead, she may just cross you off the 'list' as it were. :D |
| malykoth11-16-04, 09:30 PM | Also, it's safe to assume Vlaakith has lots of enemies who might be appealed to to provide some sort of aid. Not that anyone's gonna invade the home of the Lich Queen because you ask nice, but they might be able to provide some other assistance or information to help you. Work with the DM...a high level campaign centered around the destruction of the Lich Queen could be very interesting, indeed. |
| feartheinvinceblehamster11-16-04, 09:41 PM | hide in sigil, if the lich queen comes the lady of pain will kill her. something like this would happen githyanki assasins: HIYA you have become to powerful! for the good of the githyanki take THIS! (swings silver sword) *several rounds of combat ensue* then... githyanki:who is that *cold stony silence* githyanki: holy cru... *slice! dice! rip! tear! ETC. ! you: oooooo! you just got served, LOL lich queen comes slice dice murder! etc. you: wow, the lady of pain just beat the crud out of a ton of githyanki, well there's only one thing to do, and thats *destroy lich-queens phylactery*, *take lich-queen's stuff* and thats become the: NOT LICH KING yeah |
| malykoth11-16-04, 09:50 PM | hide in sigil, if the lich queen comes the lady of pain will kill her. Yes, this might work...but the Lady might kill both of you...Vlaakith for invading, and you for causing her to invade...she's a b*tch like that! Of course, she'll more likely imprison you both for all time...not that that's much better. |
| legolizard11-16-04, 11:00 PM | that fake your own death stuff is a pretty good idea. thanks. By the way, I am a male but my character is female. I just realy wanted to test my roleplaying skills. Also, my character just take her down and become the new queen. Not lich, but probably turn herself into a half-fragon. |
| ShadowDragon868511-16-04, 11:25 PM | You need specific sort of allies. The kind of ally who's name is in the name of the game. Think "Great Wyrm Gold Dragon." Dump XP into magic items to stay under level 17, while simultainiously twinking your party out like Red Mage. Make EVERYTHING you possibly can. Hell, make +4 ammies of natural armor and go hand them to starting adventurers, if you have to. :) Just stay under level 17, while at the same time tagging along with your party to get allies. Powerful allies. The kind of allies who will owe you enough favors that they'll help you hunt the litch-queen down. And can then lay into her with about 8 4d8 Claw attacks per round. Or Rebuking Breath attacks. (Draconomicon, I love it. :) ) |
| Melpomene11-16-04, 11:33 PM | Well, the githyanki have access to many, many large numbers of red dragons. Your best bet is to hide. So, come and visit lovely Limbo. It's very, very hard to find anything in Limbo, and, if they send anyone, a group of angry, bigotted monks can oppose them. You just have to hope you can BS your way into a monistary. I don't recomend doing what the other suggest and blow xp on magic items. Train in limbo if you want to fight the litch queen. |
| Melpomene11-16-04, 11:36 PM | Oh! Another option. Savage Species has rules for changing your race entierly. If you want to go back, it'll also give some time to train up before you have to fight her. |
| malykoth11-16-04, 11:47 PM | Oh! Another option. Savage Species has rules for changing your race entierly. If you want to go back, it'll also give some time to train up before you have to fight her. You could also get yourself killed, and have a friendly druid cast reincarnate on you. You'd be brought back as something other than a githyanki. Later, after you're epic, you could always use a wish spell to return yourself to your former race...if you wanted to. |
| Lord_Anthrax11-17-04, 07:23 AM | 1)Avoid the Astral Plane like it was filled with plague. 2)Go kiss some Celestial butt and make friends with Good Outsiders, begging their protection for the fate of your very soul. Offer to do all kinds of noble heroic stuff if they'll help protect you from the assassins. Hopefully they'll eat it up like candy. |
| Callista11-17-04, 07:39 AM | How close is your character to her god? If even marginally so, she could get a cleric to cast Miracle for her; either to keep her from being detected by the lich queen, or to turn her into a different race. Be aware that going to a different race may not get you out of the lich queen's clutches, though. She may just include "former githyanki" on her list as well. Frankly, your character is in a pretty bad situation. She hasn't got much of a chance to get out of it, but there is a chance. Have your character and her allies plan for the eventual time when she is powerful enough to attract the lich-queen's attention. Stay with at least three allies at all times. Nondetection spells are good. You'll want to just lay low until you know you can survive a final showdown. If you're caught, though... the most you can hope for is to die in the ensuing battle and be resurrected. To ensure this: Considering that your character is Good and probably opposes the lich queen, she may want to keep a dagger or vial of poison on her (sleight-of-hand) at all times, to use on herself if she is in danger of being captured. Why? --It's kind of hard to drain someone who's dead, after all. If by chance those sent to capture her don't prevent resurrection somehow, your character may even "survive" to be resurrected. If not, the DM has a plot hook to recover her trapped soul. --Good alignment. Your character may realize she would rather die than add to the power of the lich queen. She would, of course, only use such drastic measures if she were actually about to be captured and drained. It's an option even a Neutral character might take, since the afterlife is presumably a lot nicer than being some demented undead's power source. --Contingency Spell Is Your Friend. If your character actually plans for such things, you may try a bit more elaborate tactics: Set a death spell, targeted on you, to go off if you are captured by the lich queen or her lackies. You can, of course, choose to fail your save. Imagine the look on the lich-queen's face when she realizes the soul of the powerful githyanki she wanted to use to add to her own power is now out of her reach! |
| Lincoln Hills11-17-04, 05:14 PM | I don't know whether Vlaakith has genuine divine abilities or is just a jumped-up mortal caster of epic levels, but I think I should point out that mind blank - an 8th-level spell which I heartily recommend - will render your character immune to any divination of mortal scope. Even if Vlaakith is able to override such power, her huntsmen will have no such benefit - couple it with a hat of disguise and you've bought yourself some time. "If they catch you, they will kill you. But first, they must catch you!" - Frith, Watership Down |
| Lord Schpungus11-18-04, 01:24 AM | Disbelieve her. Write her out of the campaign setting. Treat her like the Lady and pretend she never existed. you'll be happy, your character will be happy, and we can all just forget about 2e and Planescape. |
| Uber Goblin11-18-04, 01:55 AM | I played a Wizards/Ur-priest Divine thearge once ( the dm allowed it though it's questionable) and he had to keep out of the view of any god. I had him construct a golem out of Urdarkium. If I remember correctly every pound gives a +2 to the scry check or something. SO a 2,000 pound golem made it RRREEEAAALLLL hard for anything other then an Overdiety to find me... damnable lady of pain... I was just gonna "borrow" that tablet of fate... :P |
| Shemeska the Marauder11-18-04, 02:56 AM | Disbelieve her. Write her out of the campaign setting. Treat her like the Lady and pretend she never existed. you'll be happy, your character will be happy, and we can all just forget about 2e and Planescape. *pat on the head* I could say something horribly demeaning, but I'll just leave it at that. You're certainly welcome to your opinion, even if it's shared by remarkably few people. At least w/ regards to Planescape, I won't speculate on 2e in general. |
| Shemeska the Marauder11-18-04, 03:09 AM | hide in sigil, if the lich queen comes the lady of pain will kill her. something like this would happen The Lady of Pain won't care about the situation unless it threatens Sigil. Vlaakith may in fact be barred from entering Sigil as well being how she's probably close to Demigod status, though not quite divine. Still, Vlaakith's very presence in Sigil would be a sufficient disruption to the status quo that she simply wouldn't be able to enter Sigil by its portals, much like archfiends/archcelestials are similarly blocked from entering the City of Doors. However, that said, you could always take refuge in the githyanki racial enclave in Sigil, Git’Riban / Githariban, in the Guildhall Ward that is rumored to be full of githyanki renegades who either are on run from Vlaakith, or simply wish to have part of their culture on the Astral at large. Of course other rumors hold that the enclave's leaders are in secret betraying errant githyanki who seek shelter there and turning certain of them over to the Lich Queen. Sigil also has enough powerful persons and powerful planespanning groups that falling into league with them is likely to forestall or remove the attentions of the Lich Queen so long as you don't intend to challange her or remain a very public thorn in her side after getting beyond level 17. |
| Shemeska the Marauder11-18-04, 03:10 AM | Another thought... you could use your wizard abilities to construct powerful magic items, serving two purposes; you would stay below the L17 marker, and you would become more powerful for when the time comes. Good luck. :) Actually that's a very popular occupation for githyanki wizards, they gain the benefits of having the items and the wealth and prestige they can bring, but by expending enough of their essence in the making of them they continually stay underneath what the Lich Queen considers to be an appropriate level of power. :D |
| NateNate11-18-04, 05:53 PM | If you're a level 17 Wizard you should have Wish. Use it to make yourself always detect as a level 1 character. Or just use it to keep your level down so they won't come kill you. Wish-up a few Pearls of Power (9th) until you can use Wish five times per day. Then everyone can have +5 to all stats, and you won't be hunted. |

Then everyone can have +5 to all stats, and you won't be hunted. While making items to keep your level down is a good idea (just make sure you have the money to keep doing it for a while,) the Wish idea won't work. You can't spend so much XP on a spell that you lose a level. I'm not too sure if that applies to magic items though, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. |
| elcid139011-19-04, 06:35 AM | One word: Clone Dozens of clones of yourself, hidden throughout the multiverse. Pull a Duncan Idaho and keep coming back ad nauseum (though I can't think of a single Dune reader who got sick of "The D"). Plus, depending on how comfortable your DM is with this sort of thing, you could always try making various "upgrades" to the clone. I'm thinking specifically of Alias (sp?) of the Azure Bonds of Forgotten Realms fame. For those unfamiliar with her, she was (if memory serves) a necromantic construct who, due to a set of magical tattoos on her arms, was immune to magical detection. Each clone costs 500 gold pieces for equipment. You hide these labs in the basements of various houses throughout the planes, protected by the standard array of non-detection spells. For 50,000 GPs, you could have a hundred clones of yourself. You see where this is going. You could die, lose a level or two, and come back ready and able to continuing participating in the campaing, all while not violating it's internal consistency. This also ensures that, if you don't want to, you dont' have to kill and (presumably) assume the mantle of the Lich-Queen. As an aside, as a DM (which is what I usually do) I'd probably be OK with something like this since it seems stupid to make a player waste all the time and effort it takes to raise a character to level 17. I mean, it breaks the suspension of disbelief to just arbitrarily say, "Well, the Lich-Queen just ignores you". But to throw away all of the history you (presumably) have established with your party is just wasteful. If you want to ask your DM for those sorts of refinements, I would bring this up. Even if your DM won't allow any after-market modification to your soul's future means of conveyance, it's still a valid plan because, as long as you gain at least two levels between each death, you're still moving forward, albeit slowly. You could also have all kinds of awesome role-playing oppurtunities involving finding your former party members after waking up in a new body far away from them, getting your stuff back, etc. (for a cool take on this sort of "character journey" rent "Payback" or read "The Hunter"). FYI, nothing messes with an someone more than a foe who A) acknowledges and accepts the death of him/herself at the hands of his foe and B) makes plans to accomodate this. That's some "I'll have my revenge, even from beyond the grave" stuff, which is always intimidating. It's a tactic generally reserved for either A) hella-evil and powerful necromancers/liches or B) Jesus. And neither of those are people you want to mess with. Hope that was helpful. |
| 75RD Drum Clip11-19-04, 11:13 PM | Consider this. Since the Githyanki in question is Good, perhaps he can level up. The consequence is that he will most certainly be hunted by his Evil Kin to be brough back to the Lich Queen to be slain for being Good as much as for being higher than 16th. As I remember, a Githyanki does not just die upon passing 16th level. |
| Melpomene11-20-04, 12:39 AM | If the litch queen did not exist, it would probably be necessary to create her. The Githyanki are a race who live, by and large, in a timeless plane of existance. They can live forever without knowing age. They also reproduce normally, and have many offspring. If thier numbers were left unchecked, the universe could easily be overrun with god-like ancient githyanki. Maruts, to name but one interested group, would certainly find a need to generate some type of check against it. |

True, on the other hand, the Prime Material Plane is infinitely large (and if you're playing Planescape, there are infinitely many Primes, aren't there?). This means there are infinitely many humans and members of other humanoid races. These races can also level to god-like power. Since Epic characters can extend their lifespans indefinitely, the universe ought to be overrun by them as well, shouldn't it? Presumably the limiting factor in both cases is that it's hard to earn the xp to level up that high. Sure, you reach 5 or 10 or 15, but then you just stop running into sufficient challenges, unless you deliberately seek them out. And if you deliberately seek out high level challenges, your long-term survival probably isn't that good, something will get you, sooner or later. |
| legolizard11-21-04, 02:05 AM | Well, techniguely a githyanki can live forever, if they don't leave the astral plane. Once someone leaves the astral plane ( which is not hard to do seeing that it's the travel hub of the whole multiverse) time catches up with them instantly. |
| MCCCXXXVII11-21-04, 02:23 AM | Perhaps you should do one of the following: 1) Aquire a template that raises ECL, making it take longer to advance to 17th level. Seeing you're a powerful mage, there should be numerous templates you can magically aquire. 2) Transform yourself into another creature (permanently). Hopefully the lich queen will loose interest. This could be done with the druid spell reincarnate or with the rituals of transformation in chapter 11 of Savage Species. |

Yes, an infinite number of prime material worlds within an infinite prime material plane. It's that way in Planescape, and it's still that way in 3e DnD in the MotP. |
