Help me convince my DM to let me play a Drow [Archive] - Wizards Community

Well, new campaign, experienced DM, experienced players. So the DM says he's gonna open it up and let us play pretty much anything we want.

The thing is, we get to start at 2nd level. I want to play a Drow, but they have a +2 ECL shift. So even if my character's class level is 1st, he would still be effetively a 3rd level character cuz of the shift due to race, putting me higher than the DM says I can start at.

Ideas on convincing the DM to let me pay a drow anyway? I thought about disabling the Drow's SA's and spell resistence until I gain another level, then he would be 1st level and get all his innate abilities back.

Thoughts?

Either delaying the SA and Spell Resistance, or delaying the +2 to INT & CHA. But beware, you will be a 1 HD character while the other ones will be 3 HD, and with your -2 to CON, you won't have too much HP. You're perhaps better to start with a normal race, wait a few levels, have this character retire from adventuring and start a new character as a drow.

Yeah. Play an elf. Done.

Seriously, your DM put restrictions on what was allowed - and not even too many restrictions, I might add. In fact, it seems like the *only* restriction (at least, from what you've described), and it seems like you're bound and determined to countermand it.

I would suggest coming up with a character concept that doesn't start with "I'm a drow!" and going from there.

1) Convince the DM to raise the starting level 3.
2) Convince him to let you play one of the variants out of the back of "Player's Guide to Faerun", which lists a variant of Drow with no LA an a kind of reverse level adjustment system. Pages 190 and 191.

If the DM still says no, you're stuck.

Oh, and the best thing you can do to let him let you play a drow: don't be chaotic stupid alignment, and don't be a Drizzt clone.

Will you be dual-wielding, chaotic good, and taking the ranger class to boot?

Or wait, lemme guess...a coldhearted rogue/wizard/fighter/cleric that has nothing to lose, and will kill anyone for a price.

Drow are so hackneyed as PCs these days it's not even funny, and you're breaking your DM's guidelines anyway.

Play something else, as so plainly stated above.

Drow are so hackneyed as PCs these days it's not even funny, and you're breaking your DM's guidelines anyway.Check out my sig, yo. I'm playing the unofficial stereotype of a drow! Except...um...I'm not actually the stereotype myself (wrong gender, age, weight, and marital status). And I altered the character a bit (but not much). So really I just kinda based it off of the stereotype. And...uh....but yeah. It counts anyway, right? :P

While hackneyed/stereotypical characters are boring, I've found that if you add a good twist to them, they can become quite refreshing. Who here is sick of the pyromaniac spellcaster? You know how their backstory goes: "blah blah blah fire, I love fire, fire is awesome, yay for fire, blah blah, I talk to fire, it's my friend, and I once burned down a bunch of things with fire but I was somehow unhurt, fire, fire, fire, whee!" It makes me twitch.

Now, play a pyromage with an elemental savant-type twist...and maybe someone who was not unhurt by the ravages of fire, but nearly died to it...spent months recovering, probably still has scars or a marked up face from it...maybe even treats fire as some sort of patron demigod that s/he reveres and start tossing in creatures with the fire subtype as favoured summons, could go for the mystical aspect...or kind of an Ancient Greek natural scientist feel...and now you've got something a little more unique and interesting.

I suggest asking to play an elf with black skin and white hair. Offer to take a light sensitivity penalty (like -1 to rolls in daylight) in exchange for upping the low light vision to dark vision. There, you are a Drow that will not be a pain in the DMs hindquarters...

Or play a Half-Drow. Just like a normal half elf with a much darker complexion. You might even be able to work out a deal for 30' darkvison, if it's really that important.

This does of course assume you want to RP a drow, not just get all the bonuses the race offers. :waits:

Hey, just for the record, I for one don't have any particular prejudice against drow, per se...just that the OP found the *one* restriction that the DM put on the campaign, and decided to break it.

That's anti-social and quite annoying to a DM. That's my issue. :)

There you have it. Perfect solution.

As a DM, when a player want to play an overpowered race (overpowered compared to the other players), I ask them if it's for the power or for role-playing purpose. almost 95% of the time, the players say it's not at all for power, but for RP" Fine, say I, you have the racial modifier of a PHB race, but look exactly like a member of your chosen race (you ARE a member of said race). Strangely, not all players agree with this... Wonder why.

That's annoying. I dislike it when players do that. However, I kind of veered off the point a little just in case it was one of those "knee jerk, stereotypical character" reactions. The OP has since said all he really wants is the SR. Aren't there other races, even PrCs in 3.5 that grant that? I know there's a freaking spell for it too, so he could be a wizard or UMD-rogue/bard and maybe go that route. I'm fairly sure there's a cloak/mantle/robe of SR too (not just the archmagi). Of course, anything at low level will be "lesser" SR -- like 4 or 5 plus char level. So it's not as useful.

Then your pretty much out of luck...or play a githyanki/zerai...they have SR 5+CL. SR is also not all that anymore since ALL conjuration bypasses this and your still toast. No sane wizard in 3.5 would load up on evocation blasty when conjuration blasty works sooo much better.

You really shouldn't focus on SR unless you DM is going to send mages after you constantly. At this low a level, that hit die or two you would be missing would make you about as frail as glass. You should just find a race that would work with the type of character you want to be. Besides, being a drow just askes for either weird RP moments or cliche RP moments. And you don't want those.

Yeah, I agree. As a DM I allow quite a few things that I know from reading these boards would never fly in someone else's game, and also don't allow some things that others do - every game is different. What I do know though is that the only thing IMHO player's are garaunteed is the PHB stuff. Look at it this way: Already the DM is doing you a huge favor by allowing what he is - don't thank him for that by trying to squeeze "just a little more" passed that. That sort of thing eventually leads to jaded and mean DM's that don't allow anything.

If the DM is actually enforcing the daylight penalties and folk's fear and hatred of Drow they're not really worth playing anyway. If I were the DM I'd say: Sure - wait, don't get those dice out. Your Drow character wanders into town on a lovely summer day. Suddenly, a strong wind blows your hood back and dozens of townsfolk see you for what you are. They promptly mob you. You try to fight them off, but are practically blind in the bright sunlight and are eventually overwhelmed by the crowd. The beat you to death with shovels, hoes, and pitchforks. So, what do you want to play for your next character?

Then you want to play a drow for the wrong reason. Find something else that fits in with the only restriction your DM has placed on the campaign, and use one of the myriad other ways to get spell resistance.

How old are you, anyway? Also, is whining your typical method for "getting what you want"?

striderDude, go easy on the personal attacks. It's Saturday now, time to chill out on the weekend. He's been given a couple other options and opinions already...

As for SR and how I feel about it: it's handy if your DM is a mage-fiend. Otherwise it's not likely to come in too useful. My drow character hasn't had to make a save against a single spell or spell-like ability in four sessions running. However, my feeling is that when you need SR, you need it bad.

Don't listen to people telling you you shouldn't want to play a race for one of their racial abilities. How are we ever supposed to become familiar with the mechanics if we don't play with them? I personally have no interest in playing a "normal" person. We're heroes. In a fantasy game. Roleplaying. You know? And there is nothing wrong with simply wanting to mess about with the rules system to see what's most effective.

If I'm not mistaken, the one, sole, only reason you can't play a drow is because the LA is too high for your starting ECL. In that case, I'd come up with a different idea right now, play that character, and when/if he eventually dies (and don't engineer his suicide please), if the resulting starting ECL is high enough, play a drow. You can also, as has been stated, find another race or even get items that will give you SR.

Oh, and on_the_wings_of_TPK has a note on mechanics: "When playing a drow at low level the lack of hit dice will severely hurt you. AT higher levels the lack of abilities that the two levels would've gotten you will hurt you even more. Thus, drow are flashy, but suck."

I'd just like to add that you can mitigate this a smidgen by seeing if the DM allows "buying off level adjustments" from the Unearthed Arcana. It won't help much, but you end up catching up to your companions a little quicker...
Cold Napalm

04-16-05, 04:27 PM
ANd if your a caster...may god have mercy on your character's soul since those 2 LA is gonna hurt any caster class. Levl buy off is the ONLY way I will ever play a drow. They are pretty damn weak for a +2 LA. Finally if you want SR because you DM is a mage fiend...forget it. Orb spells...no SR and 15d6 no save damage...also known as hey lets kill that guy who has LA since I can ignore the SR and he has no HP.

Hah! My insulting bone knows no days off! :)

Seriously, though, here is why I find the OP's reasoning distasteful:

1. The DM put *one* (to our knowledge) restriction on the game world - namely, start at 2nd Level. The OP decided he wanted to play a drow, which has a +2 LA, thus either being rather weak (no class levels), or breaking the one restriction the DM placed on the game world. Either way, it's a player seemingly wanting to do what he wants regardless of the rules placed on the campaign from the outset. This, I feel, is rather anti-social.

2. His reasoning for wanting the race had to do with a mechanic, not any degree of roleplaying reason. Presumably, the OP had no good backstory or any other reason to play the character, other than the desire to have SR. While I understand that others play the game differently than I do (and I defend their right to do so), that doesn't mean I have to like that particular style.

3. His post here, the "I reallllllly...." smacked of whining, which is annoying and immature, quite frankly. If a player pulled that on me as a DM...let's just say I'm not sure exactly what I'd do...but the player wouldn't like it.

As StriderII and I agree on is ROLE playing...I'll seriously consider an odd request if:

First, you prove to me you can ROLE play and it's not for abilities.
Second, you have an OUTSTANDING background for it.

I could see the OP wanting to play a drow, until he stated the "I reeallllly..." just for the SR...then I just shook my head. The DM was VERY generous, IMO...just be 2nd level.

There are possiblilities, like Mirikon stated...great idea! The OP can still get the SR, slower, but still get it!!

Nah...more along the lines of "oh crap, oh crap, oh crap...running, running, running". Drill sergeants are scary folks - until Basic's over, then they're like normal people. :)

Usually, I'll admit, I start with a concept too. However, that concept is usually drawn from "ooh, cool picture!", and so then I have to min-max the resulting character.

I do that, too...except for the min-max part. While I make a character that's good at what they do, every choice is defined by the character concept, even if it's not mechanically beneficial. If that's what you meant, I apologize for the incorrect conclusion I drew.

For some reason that sentence just made me chuckle out loud. I dunno, I tend to hope for the best, plan for the worst... As this is the intarw3b, communication is a little more difficult at times. And as Draco pointed out, anyone who seriously takes the opinion of people over the internet to heart needs to be checked by a psychologist. Not sure a smiting apparatus would induce the desired behaviour, but it'd be fun anyway.

Quite true.

Not much, actually, but it was more the lack of sleep preceding it. And again today. Here I come muffin and fruit juice! (You know. Semi-healthy stuff. But not really, cuz I'll have to buy it from the food court, which guarantees more preservatives, chemicals, and plastic than actual food.)

I am one with the lack of sleep, so don't worry there. (Want to know? Have a kid sometime, and wait until they're sick and wake up at 3 AM). :)

Dude. I would so love to spend time fiddling with computers. Except whenever I do, I have about a 50-50 chance of breaking them worse than they were before. My m4d 1337 sk1zz1llz have fallen. *sigh*

Yeah....my girlfriend is actually our Chapter's web person, even though she doesn't know how to code (she uses WYSIWYG stuff). I was trying to get something done on the site for her that she couldn't do via her method. Yet another reason hard-coding is better, dammit. :) All you need to write a page is Notepad - no fancy programs needed.

Nah...more along the lines of "oh crap, oh crap, oh crap...running, running, running". Drill sergeants are scary folks - until Basic's over, then they're like normal people. :)Drill sargeants are the reason I know I'd never make it in the army, air force, navy, what have you...I probably wouldn't be able to contain myself and at exactly the wrong moment I'd get in doodoo for doing something funny.

I do that, too...except for the min-max part. While I make a character that's good at what they do, every choice is defined by the character concept, even if it's not mechanically beneficial.Hm, well, I do try to build on the concept's strengths and eliminate its weaknesses...for instance, a drow bard really benefits from playing a masterwork lute.

Oh, and I gave her Kiai Shout just for fun. ^_^

If that's what you meant, I apologize for the incorrect conclusion I drew.I do a bit of both. I have to be able to "feel" my characters or they don't come alive and the game is less fun. For instance, TPK brewed me up this weird paladin/ranger/monk mix using those multiclassing feats in the Complete Series, and it's weird and unusual, but...a bit monstrous. o.O That, and I don't do LG characters too well. I'm more of a CG person. My little druid is getting boring, she's too much like a "normal" person...no spark of individuality, really. Unusual background and that's it. No personality quirks, no burning ambition to go save the world...hasn't really bonded with any of the other characters in the group.

The DM killed all but one other character last session, so I get to make a new one at level 2. I rolled 17, 17, 15, 15, 13, 11 for stats in front of him (4d6 reroll ones...and he still won't admit it's overpowered :D ). I don't know what to make. I think I want to focus on either a funky monk or a ranger, but I'm not sure. *sigh*

....Uh....</tangent>

I come at characters from a number of angles. I want to figure out how to make a mechanical concept strong with an interesting rp depth to it. I've been trying to figure out how to work a geometer for a while now. (I'd go back to playing a wizard in that other campaign, but the surviving character is one already. Bleh.)

I am one with the lack of sleep, so don't worry there. (Want to know? Have a kid sometime, and wait until they're sick and wake up at 3 AM). :)Hee, I feel like I still am a kid sometimes...right now my sleep schedule is thrown out the window as I combine work, school (now procrastinating "studying" for finals), and trying to spend time with fiance who gets off work at 12:30 at night and likes to stay up til 3-4am.

And I hate getting sick and being unable to breathe, so it keeps/wakes you up. Royal PITA. Thankfully so far the stress has kept my immune system afloat.

Oh, you beat me to it. Oh well. :allalone:

Since I get 2 levels to start with, I will be....

A Human Male from Halruaa (FR region)

first level will take Fighter, second level will be Wizard.
back story will be he is forced out of Halruaa due to political intrigue and settles in Sembia or Waterdeep where he attends wizard school, vowing to return home one day to take his revenge..

oh and he will be LE...

Trust me, there's no "right" moment. But, in hindsight, Basic was kind of fun. I mean, where else can I throw live grenades and shoot machineguns without being arrested for it?

Hm, well, I do try to build on the concept's strengths and eliminate its weaknesses...for instance, a drow bard really benefits from playing a masterwork lute.

Well, it's a bit tangental to the oft-hackneyed "roleplayers make weak characters" argument that you see pretty much anytime a roleplaying vs. powergaming thread comes along. But, basicaly, there's nothing wrong with picking skills, abilities, equipment, etc to make your character strong, or skilled with what fits his or her concept. It's the "okay, I want a lot of strength so I can 'win' the game...okay, I'll take this from the DMG, then this Feat from some obscure 3rd party book that I'm sure I can pressure my DM into letting me have, then I need this book...". I'm sure you get the idea.

And I hate getting sick and being unable to breathe, so it keeps/wakes you up. Royal PITA. Thankfully so far the stress has kept my immune system afloat.

Thankfully, I have a wonderful immune system. Last winter, I had the flu for a day and a half - kicked it without taking any medicine, and while going to work one of those days. My only weakness is seasonal allergies. My friends love to tease me about it: "Oh, look - the nature-loving pagan has *hay fever*!" Gotta love it. *sigh*

Gah! I stick by my motto: "Viva Los Notepad!"

Well, I love her to death, it's just that she lacks the ability to look at code, and translate that into what that code represents on the page. I'm trying to teach her, though.

Um...is that anything like the Real Slim Shady? "Will the real UR please stand up, please stand up". I quoted Eminem.....oh god...shoot me. :gah:

That's much better. Just please try not to do anything just on the basis of "because it's eeevvviiilll".
