| Gavinfoxx06-29-06, 12:33 PM | Hi, I'm running a Romanesque game using 3.5 rules where one of the earlier things the party will probably go up against is a bunch of...something in a working copper mine that has been killing the miners. Now, the thing is, I dont want this to really be Kobolds or Undead, and I need some ideas for what would be appropriate for this (level 3) party to go up against that would be interesting and able to kill miners without being really identified... Any suggestions? Its okay if you reference some creature that is written up online or something, I don't need to stay within the books as written. Thanks! -Gavinfoxx |

Also, you could try page 77 in the DMG, it has a few pages on dungeon ecology, which you might want to base the mine on, make a few changes to your liking, might want to look into that. Hope it helps! |

They frequent mines often and are a dark, stealthy goblin race who worship a goddess of murder and assassins, so it would be quite their M.O. to slay a miner or two without being identified or even seen. Perhaps the assassination of miners are some sort of sacrifice to their goddess. The Coal goblins are 2 HD and advance by character class favoring rogue. They have stone cunning like dwarves, 120 ft. darkvision. They also receive a +6 racial bonus to hide and move silently. Let me know if you want more info. They can be found in the Revised Creature Collection for Scarred Lands. If you're interested let me know. |
| anarco_rata06-29-06, 05:36 PM | A druid! You could place a druid that thinks the miners are damaging the nature, so he attacks them in order to prevent it. Add a couple of dire bats, mounstrous Centipede and spiders or bat swarms for fun and encounters adn you got yourself a dungeon. |
| Shaggy_Shaggs06-29-06, 05:53 PM | Anything big, mean, and burrowing. Possibly purple worms in reverse-advanced larval forms, since a full grown one almost certainly be a TPK. Think the Tremors movie series. Giant underground predatory worms are neat. |
| Stormbrand07-02-06, 05:19 AM | Oozes, slimes, jellies. Maybe a medusa if you can think of a reason, gives them a chance to rescue petrified miners. Dretches or small fiends, slight corruption on the miners... |
| Vaelan07-02-06, 09:45 AM | Kobolds or Gnomes with the Create Trap spell from Races of the Dragon. What more do you need? |
| draco111907-02-06, 09:51 AM | I like Cloakers. Easy and deadly... |
| Missing Minds07-03-06, 08:28 AM | Stirges also. Someone already mentioned the slimes/oozes/oochers bit. Gelatiounus Cube is also a good one. But at low level... you could also just make it "human error' you know shoddy work when shoring up the mines so they don't crumble and everyone thinks it is something else causing all of the problems when instead is just a lazy worker who doesn't have any common sence. Maybe as swarm of huge rats? Termiites? Spiders are always a good and freaky one. |
