| Greyhawk Bear07-30-06, 08:13 PM | If you were to use only Core Books (PH,DMG,MM) how would you most easily, efficiently, effectively (and cheaply!) raise your touch armor class? Create damage reduction? Gain spell resistance? This is a generaly question, but the two campaighns I'm in now I play a Rogue and a Cleric respectively. Thanks! |
| SokenzanMarauder07-30-06, 08:14 PM | High dexterity and I belive a dodge bonus to armor class will do wonders. -Gene |
| Greyhawk Bear07-30-06, 08:24 PM | The Rogue has that. But two weeks ago met a rather nasty death. Err.. undeath. Got touched twice by Dire Wraiths. Con damage totalling 19. He's down, wait! He's back up. As undead. |
| SokenzanMarauder07-30-06, 08:39 PM | Ouch, I've had that happen before (it was shadows though). Have you tried a cloak of displacement? You wouldn't belive how many times a 20% (if I remember correctly) miss chance can save your butt. -Gene |

Very, very few things raise Touch AC (one of the reasons Touch Attacks are fairly nasty). Among them are: Increasing DEX, anything which grants a Dodge Bonus to AC, Force Effects (like Bracers of Mage Armor). I think Deflection Bonus adds to Touch AC as well, but I can't cite a source for that. Creating damage reduction and gaining spell resistance can handily be done with various magics. |
| LCD2YOU07-30-06, 08:46 PM | 1: Don't go to the bar, put on the beer goggles and then hit on women who came in with other men. 2: When a gop pulls you over never say, "Aren't I keeping you from a donut". 3: Never, ever go up to a guy with "The Complete Psionist" and say, "Psionics sux". Hope those were helpful. |
| JezzTheLame07-30-06, 08:53 PM | you could play a monk. High Dex and Wis make for something a bit ridiculous ac-wise, even with core only. Flat-footed ac will be a little poor, however. monk grants spell resistance and damage reduction at higher levels. Preventing themselves from getting hurt is pretty well all that a monk can do. |
| fullmetal8011007-30-06, 09:50 PM | If all you are going into monk for is ac just buy the sash of the monk, you get wis+1 to ac. Than you need to fight defensively with alot of tumble. Honestly the best way to get touch ac is just bracers and rings of protection and other things like that.. Otherwise it becomes really expensive for the same thing. Now i know how to get ac into the 40s no items or anything by 5th level, you have to talk your gm into letting you use the book of exalted deeds, go sacred vow, vow of poverty, vow of non violence, vow of peace..they all give armor and they stack. Than believe it or not run barbarian (hp) and get a non mw axe and some leather armor, they will actually own. |
| Tempest Stormwind07-30-06, 09:55 PM | The current AC record is a little over 200ish (I think it's 225, but I'm not entirely certain). A lot of the general techniques are easily ported to core. For instance, it's cheaper to get a +1 ring (deflection), a +1 amulet (natural), and +1 bracers (armor) for a net +3 than it is to get a single +3 item or even a +2 and a +1. Look for other armor types. Combat Expertise also works wonders. |
| BW022207-30-06, 10:15 PM | Greyhawk Bear, Try mirror image + blur or mirror image + displacement. Wands or potions are often good. Mathmetically it is much better than trying to get a higher AC, especially as you approach mid-levels. The pure AC route... try high dex, dodge, 5 ranks in tumble, and fighting defensively or going total defense. |
| Dag07-31-06, 05:01 AM | Be generous to your spell casters. In the campaign I play a tank I made it a point to get our wizards and cleric a few wands. they remember stuff like that, and since I paid for them and generously told them to use it however they want, I usually am the first person they buff with them. for 750 GP you can get a mage armor wand, there's a +4 bonus to your touch AC for an hour, for the same price protection from evil yields +2 defelction bonus which helps touch AC and helps with saves. Obviously vs. Undead a death ward cant be beat, but you need a kindly cleric for that as a wand would be quite expensive. |
| kelvinaw27307-31-06, 05:23 AM | Best way of raising Touch AC include .... Take a level of Monk if you have a decent Wisdom Use a Monk's Sash Use Rings of Protection (deflection mod) Use Boots of Speed (Haste reduces touch AC) Use anything that can boost your dodge bonus |
| Greyhawk Bear07-31-06, 10:08 PM | Thanks for all the Touch AC help! Any further ideas on adding spell resistance? Looking for a cost effective way other than the 5th level cleric spell. |
