My suggestion is dual wield short swords (light weapons), go for 18 starting dex and wear a chain shirt, and take the weapon finesse feat so you can add your high dex bonus to attack rolls instead of your probably low strength

OR

you could dual wield one handed weapons and shoot for high strength

the only other option i can think of is a combat rogue.

Run high dex and light armour.

then pick up the TWF tree and spring attack.

As a new player, you can't go wrong with a Ranger.

Lots of good literary/legendary archetypes (Jerimiah Johnson, Aragorn, Davey Crockett, etc.), little bit thief, little bit fighter, litlle bit druid, little bit country, and a a little bit rock n' roll.

Everyone likes a Ranger :)

I agree with the above..Go Ranger. If you multiclass with Rouge you got a deadly combo. Finessing a Scimitar and using a Kukri will give you two weapons with an 18-20 Crit Range. Who doesn't like critting with SA damage thrown in as well?
Bad thing though....must be 3rd level. Ranger2/Rge1.

Rogue.
Rogue. Rogue.
Rogue. Rogue. Rogue.
Rogue. Rogue. Rogue. Rogue.

Finessing a Scimitar and using a Kukri will give you two weapons with an 18-20 Crit Range.I may have missed a rules change, but I didn't think Scimitar was among the allowed weapons for the Weapon Finesse feat since it's a Medium weapon and not specifically listed in the feat's description (like Rapier is). Of course, you may not have been referring to the actual feat. As a Ranger who likes to use a Scimitar, I'd appreciate any information anyone can shed.

I am going down a similar track and I am going to go the scimitar route with a high dex/weapon finesse feat. The thing is that you need to PrC into Dervish and then it will apply to the scimitar. Goto the optimization board and they will give you a boatload of ideas.

I'd recommend that you not try to do anything too complicated, your first time playing.

The dual short sword ranger suggestion seems to be about the simplest one here. Don't try to min/max a character your first time out... play a straight ranger, and don't hunt through 8 splatbooks for feats. Rangers are fun even without min/maxing, and it'll give you a chance to get used to the rules without having to worry about 8 different factors that affect each attack or skill check you make.

Depending on your DM, I'd recommend the feats "alertness" and "stealthy" for this character. They give +2 to spot and listen, and +2 to hide and move silently, respectively. Those are huge ranger skills, and +2 may not be much, but it makes you 2 better than anyone else can be at your level.

That's once you've gotten things like weapon focus: short sword out of the way, though. Fortunately, as a human, you get an extra feat =)
