| FireAge03-30-04, 06:33 AM | Our DM has designed a monster which he calls a quicksilver golem. Our party currently consists of: 10 th level cleric (has magic domain so can use wizard scrolls) 11 th level rogue 11 th level fighter 9 th level barbarian (got killed twice by the golem already) Basically it is like the T1000. If we damage it enough it will melt into a pool of liquid silver and a few rounds later it will be right back with full hp and everything, it also has the stats of an iron golem including magic immunity. Everytime you hit it with a slashing or piercing weapon you must win a n opposing strength check or your weapon will become stuck in the golem. So far I (the cleric) have been able to incapacitate it a few times with my club, and teleporting out (travel domain), but it just keeps coming. My DM really likes the terminator movies :( Now we have not found any weaknesses in this thing, and we are sure it will find us in a few more days. If anybody has got any suggestions that would be great. And no "Throw him into a vulcano" stuff please. Is there some usefull anti-golem spell or weapon, which will work on him inspite of his magic immunity? I've got craft magic arms & armour and wondrous items, so I could make something if neccesary. EDIT: I'm using 3.0 |
| HoshiAdam03-30-04, 08:27 AM | A mace of smiting is the way to go (DMG page 227). On a critical, a construct is destroyed, no save. Also, spell immunity only works on spells that are affected by spell resistance. If you have metamagic feats, I'd recommend prepping a bunch of melf's acid arrow varieties (Extended, empowered/extended, empowered, maximized). If you can get in into a pit, Acid Fog would be good also. Otherwise, you'll need to get some wierd trick to do it. Like a bag of devouring, or the bag of holding/portable hole trick, or something else like that. Sadly, the usual way of dealing with a dm's perversion of constructs (forcecage followed by some no SR damage spells) isn't available to you yet. |
| FireAge03-30-04, 08:53 AM | Thanx, the mace is a good idea, however, I'm to low a level to actually craft it, and 75.312 gp is a lot of money for a lv 10 party. I've probably got around 20k myself which is not equipment. Mace of Smiting (DMG p189) +3 Heavy-Mace Against Constructs: +5 Heavy-Mace Any Construct struck with a critical hit is destroyed (no save). Any Outsider struck with a critical hit takes x4 damage 75,312 gp Any more suggestions would be welcome. Acid might be a good idea. The acid arrows might work, though I think it would be cheaper to just buy acid potions and throw those at it, than to buy a wand of acid arrow. I estimate it's got about 60-70 hps, so 20 flasks of acid should work 20d6 average=70 damage, that is of course if it does not somehow reform itself after acid damage (I sure hope not) |
| Sereno03-30-04, 09:46 AM | Does your DM like the movie enough to give the golem the same weakness to cold? If so, freeze it with Cone of Cold, etc and carry it into someone's icehouse. If it's immune to the spell, see if you can chill the surroundings (Ice Storm, Freezing Sphere, etc) to a low enough temperature to affect it. It might be immune to the spell but not to just cold in general. If not, try getting it to melt, again, and scoop it into a big iron pot and then weld the lid shut on it. Oh, yeah, you could always drop it into a volcano (sorry, couldn't resist). :D |
| Sunrider03-30-04, 09:56 AM | Freeze, shatter and disperse. Or find a means to corrode it - acid, rust monsters, whatever. Reduce it to a mercury oxide golem. |
| FireAge03-30-04, 10:04 AM | I can use scrolls or wands as a 5th level wizard so all of those high level cold spells are out, though I do think it will have cold vulnerability. I thought about rust, but have no druid in our party, so "rusting grasp" is out. Can you summon a rust monster? If so, what level summon spell would that be? So far, the best idea is acid I guess, just hope it doesn't kill me before I manage to hit it with 20 potions of acid :( |
| Goreg Skullcrusher03-30-04, 10:22 AM | Well, this won't win you the fight, but it'll help greatly, despite its simplicity. Grease. My DM once sent us an army of Clay Golems to deal with, so even Acid was useless. Grease bought us some time to recuperate. (And had we any offensive spells that would've worked, we could have taken our time taking them down) If the thing doesn't have DR, then Evard's Black Tentacles are an option. If nothing else, he'll be grappled/slowed, again buying you time. |
| krichaiushii03-30-04, 12:51 PM | Craft a scarab of golembane. It will help a bit. From the SRD: Scarab, Golembane: This beetle-shaped pin enables its wearer to detect any golem within 60 feet, although he must concentrate (a standard action) in order for the detection to take place. A scarab enables its possessor to combat golems with weapons, unarmed attacks, or natural weapons as if those golems had no damage reduction. Moderate divination; CL 8th; Craft Wondrous Item, detect magic, creator must be at least 10th level; Price 2,500 gp. |
| bjorntfh03-30-04, 02:24 PM | If it reforms... why not just contain it? Spend the cash to buy 2 5th level scrolls: Wall of Force (if you can get 3.0 dome that's what you need) and Permanency. Beat it into a pool. Read scroll of Wall of Force. REad Scroll of permanency. Walk away. It's not coming out of there EVER. (unless someone gets stupid and disinitigrates it, but that's the DM setting a grudge monster free.... not your problem.) |
| FireAge03-30-04, 05:42 PM | Good idea about the wall of force, however, only our rogue might be able to do that, since I can only read scrolls of upto lvl 3 arcane spells. Most good ideas need arcane casting, which we are short of :( But still, it's a good idea, I just have to convince him that 1500 xp is a small price to pay for all of our lives :) |
| danielinthewolvesden03-30-04, 06:57 PM | Quicksilver likes to amalgam with precious metals. It then becomes a malleable solid. So shoot it full of Silver & gold pieces. Acid also works very well on Mercury. |
| krichaiushii03-30-04, 07:05 PM | It occurs to me that green slime should stop it - or any other metal-eating slime/ooze/pudding. Either stored in ceramic jugs for throwing or used as part of a trap, I would think that should damage the golem rather permanently. |
| Edymnion03-30-04, 07:27 PM | Could also try a good old fashioned pit filled with acid, then bull rush the thing into the pit. Total immersion in acid SERIOUSLY cranks up the damage per round. This is, of course, that you can actually find that much acid in time, and can line the pit with something the acid won't eat through, and all that rot. But its an idea. Instead of a pool of molten metal, drop him in a pool of burning acid. |
| bjorntfh03-30-04, 08:22 PM | Actually, you can use the scrolls, you just need to roll a 4 on the caster check to read it (or 2 if you've got the synergy bonus from skills... I think the skill is either spellcraft or decipher script.) |
| FNFAL Ninja03-31-04, 01:48 AM | Level 10 cleric? Cast Know Vulnerabilites (Magic of Faerun - Clr4 Brd4) It gets a will save and SR, and you have to be close, but knowing more about what you have to face is always helpful. I say cast it, make your DM tell you it's weaknesses and strengths, then run to prepare for the next encounter. Information is your best bet. Don't know your other domain, but divinations are divine when you need to know about something. |
| Kalrin03-31-04, 02:01 AM | This won't sound helpful, but whenever something seems unbeatable remember my favorite adage: "If you can't beat it, either A) Drop a Mountain on it or B) Drop it down a big Hole" I'd say use A) in this case. Specifically use Wall of Stone and basically build a stone wall/pile around it. Memorize it multiple times so you can really bury it.... Point out that if there is enough stone and the thing doesn't have enough space to move that it won't be able to burst free..... And then you get a Rock "Candy" with a "Chewy" center.... Sorry, couldn't resist :) |
| FireAge03-31-04, 03:55 AM | Kalrin: I don't think the piling enough stone onto it will do. My DM will probably just let it cut it's way out. FNFAL Ninja: Know vulnerabilities won't work, it's immune to magic. Divination is a good idea however, there must be some way to learn more about this construct. bjorntfh: Are you sure about that? Edymnion: Filling a pit with acid might be hard, assuming a potion is 0.5 liters, an you would need a pit of about 1m*1m*2m of acid (2000 liters) that means it would require 4000 potions of acid :( As for lining the pit, that's easy, mud will do fine, iirc. krichaiushii: I like the idea about ooze, but how would I go about obtaining an ooze, is there a summon ooze spell? danielinthewolvesden: Wouldn't the gold/silver need to be liquid in order for it to amalgam with mercury? The idea is cool though, because in the movie the T1000 get's weakened when it's frozen and shot into bits because of molten iron corruption. EDIT: Maybe I could summon some ankheg or a digester? Are there any other acid inflicting creatures that could be summoned? |
| Vaalingrade Ashland03-31-04, 04:36 AM | Next time you pool that sucker, scoop it into a bag of holding, then toss the bag into a portable hole. |
| Asta Kask03-31-04, 05:10 AM | Originally posted by Sunrider Freeze, shatter and disperse. Or find a means to corrode it - acid, rust monsters, whatever. Reduce it to a mercury oxide golem. You can't reduce it to a mercury oxide golem - you'd have to oxidize it. It is the oxidizing agent that gets reduced. A couple of kilograms of potassium permanganate should do the trick. Instant red powder golem. |
| bjorntfh03-31-04, 10:02 AM | In the DMG for reading scrolls, if you're insufficient caster level (which you are) you need to make a level check of 1d20+level against the minimum caster level of the scroll. Since that's 9 (for a 5th level spell) you need to roll a 4+ to read the scroll correctly. If you have 5 ranks in either spellcraft or descipher script you need to roll a 2+. If you cast guidance first you can put that +1 to the level check making you either automatically succede (since you need a 1+ and can't autofail a level check) or only need a 3+. This means you've got a 90% chance of doing it right. |
