Help me kit out my Dwarf Ranger [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-29-06, 07:21 PM Unfortunately I don't have any books on me at the moment. I need to organise some equipment for My Dwarf Ranger. He is 3rd level. I remembered the costs of weapons so I have purchased masterwork dwarvish axe and a masterwork short sword to use together.

I have 2700gp left and would really like to buy some light armour. Can anyone recomend something? How much would a light breastplate cost (so that I could still fight with two weapon style.) I have +1 for dex.

08-29-06, 07:27 PM A breastplate that is light would have to be mithril. A breastplate is medium armor. To have medium armor made of mithril costs an additional 4,000 gold pieces. You've got some saving to do.

08-29-06, 07:53 PM Mithral breastplate is light. With that +1 dex you should probably look into going for the Deepwarden PrC. That way your AC will be increased by CON instead of DEX.

08-29-06, 09:10 PM The Deepwarden prestige class looks to be an ideal path for a Dwarf ranger. You'll need a BAB of +5, Climb 5 ranks, Heal 5 ranks, Jump 5 ranks, Knowledge (Dungeoneering) 5 ranks, Survival 5 ranks, and the Endurance feat. All can be gained with 5 levels of ranger.

Knowledge (Dungeoneering) is a good skill to have, since Dwarf rangers do more of their work underground (typically). It also provides useful information about oozes. My Dwarven Defender, with 1 rank in the skill, got a good roll to reveal the properties of ochre jelly in the last game. I'd never metagame with OOC knowledge, but in character knowledge is another matter entirely.

Think about collecting mushrooms. You might take Profession (Cook) to keep the party fed, and knowing which mushrooms to eat (and which not!) can make your recipes tastier (and safer!).

08-29-06, 09:39 PM actually with only 5 ranks required and all those skills being class skills you could get away with only 2 lvls of ranger and 3 lvls of filler class then go deepwarden at lvl 6 assuming you went a full bab class for filler lvls. (druid 3 deepwarden 2 druid 2 MoMF 10 warshaper 1) or some variation after 7th lvl of MoMF taking some lvls of warshaper or natures warrior goodness. just my 2 cp whenever dwarf, ranger, and deepwarden are mentioned on the same page.

I did go for a fairly high Con character for a change so deepwarden might be perfect. Have to say I have not really thought beyond basic character creation. One of those wait and see what the campign is like before I decide which way he will go. I was thinking of maybe some barbarian levels, I thought it complimented the character quite well.

Just remember that neither Ranger nor Barbarian are favored classes for a Dwarf, so remember the -20% XP penalty. If you want a ranger/barbarian, keep their levels within one of each other. Prestige classes don't count for this penalty, so no need to worry about gaining levels in Deepwarden.

You could start out as Ranger 2/Barbarian 1, and progress toward Ranger 3/Barbarian 2. That gives you Endurance as a bonus feat, Uncanny Dodge, and plenty of skill points for making the skill requirements.

The barbarian's fast movement will complement the ranger's abilities quite nicely, and his ability to rage in combat will make his two weapon fighting more effective. This could be an excellent build.

A barbarian gains proficiency in light and medium armor, so you could go with the breastplate and not suffer a movement reduction (being a Dwarf). But if you go with a chain shirt, the AC benefit is only one less, and being light armor you can sleep in it without suffering fatigue. That's very useful when getting jumped in the night. When you get to Ranger 3 and gain Endurance, you can sleep in your breastplate without penalty.

You could always carry a chain shirt in your backpack to don when bedding down for the night. Dwarves usually don't mind carrying extra weight, and your fast movement won't be affected until you reach a heavy load.
