perhaps a cleric? everyone can use a good cleric. :D

but seriously, the best way to think up a new character is to think of a theme.
examples:
"I want to be just like the old knights of yore."=Paladin
"I want to have the ability to destroy and create the energies of the universe in my hands." = Wizard (and an apparently evil/power-hungry one)
"I just want to help people." =Cleric, or perhaps Bard
et al.

think of what you want to do, and we may be able to help you from there.

Character- Instrument makes a big difference (see Tools of the Trade in Complete Adventurer if you have it). Keep it unique if you can. Remember that you are strictly a support character, so take skills the others dont or cant have and choose feats that cover the different areas you focus on because of PC that arent there (combat prowess if a full-on fighter isnt in the group, spell enhancers if theres no spellcaster, etc.)

Role-playing- Try to put a new spin on the class. Maybe instead of a solitary performer he's looking to form a troupe and adventures to find them. Or perhaps (as my next Bard will be doing) he is joining a group of adventurers to write tales and songs (possibly poetry) of their exploits and heroism and finds that he is capable in the career as well.

That's a pretty general question. If someone is bored and just wants to hurt people, a barbarian is the way to go. Just get in there and whack the crap out of everything. That's fun for awhile.

Druids are so versatile that it can be annoying thinking about the best way to accomplish a task.

I don't think clerics are as uber as they are made out to be. They are versatile, but their damage output can be pretty lousy.

Paladins seem to be immune to practically everything. Our party has one, he's a tank, but he's a halfling so he hits for 1d6 unless he's smiting evil. Pretty lame in the damage output category.

Something with spells at least keeps you interested by wondering what spells you should take each level.
