Hey all. After my rogue's recent adventures concerning him risking his life for the good of the world without a second thought to his own safety (at least until the glacier over the lost city began to cave in) despite being Chaotic Neutral, I've decided to play a Paladin as soon as I get the chance to retire the rogue.

The campaign I'm playing uses a 28pt buy. For races, I'll choose either Human, Elf or Half-Elf. Racial choice will depend on how you guys advice me to buy my stats. Also, I need to know if I should invest skill points into Listen and Spot or just rely on my AC and HP to see me through.

I'd use the following layout for a 28 PB setup.

15 Str
10 Dex
14 Con
10 Int
12 Wis
14 Cha

Boost Str at 4th and put 2 in wisdom when needed to get appropriate wisdom for spellcasting. Other points go to Charisma.

Race would be human. You could put two points from Int in Dex, but I prefer to be able to have at least Diplomacy and Sense motive maxed with a Paladin. Alternatively, you could put two points from Con into Dex, a fair tradeoff if you ask me. As for Listen and Spot, you can do without. Maybe boost those with items?

I think I'd spend them like this.

And put every ability score increase into Charisma. Dwarf and human are both good choices, but only human is on your list. Forget cross-class skills: take Diplomacy, Ride, and Sense Motive.

Paladins are a strong defensive class. You'll get to add two ability scores to every save and, effectively, to each hit die as well using lay on hands.
