Your post was sketchy, but here is the answer to the question (as I understood it). Every class has specific abilities that are more important than others. For example, a Barbarian needs strength and constitution with some dexterity thrown in (for initiative and AC) and wisdom (for certain class abilities). On the other hand, a Cleric needs wisdom for spells, charisma for turning and constitution for hit points. In the PHB it will state which abilities are needed under the section labeled abilities. However, your character may vary from the examples in the PHB so they are really more guidelines than set rules. Be sure you understand the purpose behind the ability as applies to the class, that way you can decide how much of what ability your character needs.

Abilities = STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHR

Modifiers =
(+1) for ability scores 12-13,
(+2) for ability scores 14-15,
(+3) for ability scores 16-17,
(+4) for ability scores 18-19,

ect...

I hope that helps.

...I was fairly certain I've already replied to this thread. I clearly remember writing a five-stop breakdown of how to determine ability modifiers. Did you by chance post in more than one forum? More often than not only one thread need be started for you to get an adequate answer.

Anyway, I'm too lazy to redo it, so find the System Reference Document here or on the D&D website and read the section titled "Basics". That's a healthy start.

Subtract 10 from the score and divide the remainder by 2. Round down.
