Here is the situation the barbarian is a really good buddy of mine who role plays, IMHO amazingly. The situation is this 3 events have really shaped the barbarian in his life as of this moment 1. he was competing against a caster(we didnt know he was a caster) in a swimming competition, they are in this huge lake and swimming back in forth to see who can go the most or something to that effect midway through caster boy casts hold on the barbarain the casters friends attack us barbarain fails save and drowns in the middle of the lake. 2. the previous event has shaken the barbarians resolve about swimming and we get to another lake thats even larger but has an island about half way through so we cast fly and start heading towards the island, a lizard man or something aquatic casts dispel barbarian and warrior both fall from sky we were only 20ft about water to reduce chance of injury if the distance was further than we thought.....barbarian has hold person cast on him he fails sinks to bottom and gets butt kicked under water while we save the fighter who is in trouble on top (turned out that island was the lizard mens home where they revered a mystic diety of a dragonic nature), 3. we are challenge to a fight between us and 2 necromancers 1 vampire 2 cultist warrior types....the vampire seems to be the biggest warrior threat and barbarian challenges him one on one.....so necromancers close the vampire and the barbarian in walls of force quicken rods and normal casting to get all four sides in first round and the vampire uses a scroll after winning initiative and casts clould kill.....so barbarain starts taking con damage and vampire started doing more con damage...some how the barbarian won against the vampire and we defeated the necros and cultists....so the barbarian spent time and finally got in a whole role playing way LONG STORY a necklace of adaption and a ring of freedom of movement....thats what the barbs story is now....we are a lot higher lvl now the barbarian to go with his ring and necklace has the +8 str/con belt, na bracers, +5 holy/chaotic/kobold bane great axe...swarm fighting kobolds once drove him mad so he got his +1 great axe kobold bane...and just kept making it better...anyway we are going to a place where we anticipate a lot of undead and necromancers all of us bought scarab of protections....but he wont wear one....we wont stop wearing the necklace of adaption claiming it is an item that protects from the only thing that can kill him.....we finally got him to use a silver warhammer which we great magic weapon it with a shield that is +1 deathward but that shield is only gone absorb one negative effect.......my buddy knows that he is in danger but in character he and i see why that necklace just means so much to him...any ideas that can get that necklace off the barbarian who is terrified of drowning/and cloud type spells. oh yea he doesnt like ioun stones i tried we fought a caster once with ioun stones we defeated him in half a round and the stones just fell when he did so he claims they are worthless trinkets lol.

Paragraphs: Friend, not foe. Here's a slightly more readable text for anyone who feels like helping.

The barbarian has drowned several times from Hold Person in water, and has an in-character serious fear of it. He has a necklace of adaption and a ring of freedom of movement now to counteract the effects. We are going to fight necromancers now, and have bought scarabs of protection because we fear death effects, but he won't wear one because his character doesn't want to take off the items that are "keeping him alive". What do I do about this?

Make a varient using some other slot. It says you can do it in the DMs guide, just make it make sense.

It's more expensive, though--can your party afford it?

Does your party have a caster that can protect the barbarian with deathward?

the only reason why we bought the scarabs was because we intend to use deathward but expect it will be dispelled.

Step 1: By several undead monstrosities on the black market.

Step 2: Use them to thoroughly traumatize the barbarian.

Step 3: Hand him his scarab.

What can I say? Go with what you know.

You could also tell him to put the necklace of adaptation in his pocket. If he needs it, just switch out his necklaces. The effect begins instantly.

Have the barbarians current item do both things. Enchantments can be doubled up on items, given the one item a much higher market value.
