| thofighta08-17-04, 04:10 PM | Sometimes I just hate my DM!!! Just had to get that out, now I would need some help with my problem.... We are currently creating our PC's in his new campaign, +2 template, and 7 class lvls.... I chose Githzerai Monk :) Thats what I was eager to play, and I think roleplay reasons ought to be set above metagamethinking. But anyway, i chose a profession, Architect, engineer and carpenter, so I would be able to construct temples to the favour of my devoted deity ( I still ought to find a deity tho, since I dont know what deity is the Githzerai's, anyone know? I hate St Cutberth, just don't like him, and I am LN alignement :) ) Well, so my DM wants a story out of me, I go on telling him that I have a goal to influence my craftmanship and splendid architecture on the surrounding world by building temples and monuments, and great buildings. And he goes on, great great, good goal.... Then I thought we had agreed that my Githzerai forttress had been destroyed by githyanki or other forces, and I had been rescued, brought to a human monastery at the material plane..... but NO, HECK NO! That *lots of cursing words....* DM of mine tells me, they are under siege, and that I was sent out to get reinforcements to lift the siege.... I say: Well, what the hell am I doing at material plane then?? I ought to be at chaos of limbo looking for fellow Githzerais. He: No, that plane aint exsisting, you are living on etheral plane now. Me: Okey, then I ought to go there then. He: Its like a desert, nobody for many miles, and your race are almost extinct. Me: Well, then I would sure not go to cities in material plane then, and I dont see your ******* point in giving me that story, because my race dont usually trust other races... He: Then make another character then!!!! I mean, why???? WHAT, was wrong with the first story?? I mean, the halfdragon PC that my friend made had a storyline like: Dad (human) ****ed Mom (brass dragon) I was born.... And the other thing, if I am to raise a friggin ARMY to rescue my kind, what time would I get to even raise a shepherds cottage??? Beside that, what! Reason would I have to adventure afterwards?? I would most certain be a HERO in my fortress, and the new Monk master, since the last one was dead...according to my DM... PLease people, need some views here, who are the one making the trouble?? Am I just a troublemaker? Or am I right in accusing my DM for not treating me fair?? |

You are upset about him screwing up your background and he probably thought of a really cool idea when you gave him your background and he thought a slight change wouldn't matter. You both seem a little... short with one another. I would suggest explaing to him your concerns and then ask if he was changing the background for the campaign. If he wasn't asking you to change it for the campaign then I think your DM is an ***. Either way, your guy seems more intelligence than charisma so maybe you could explain that maybe you were out traveling looking at the various architecture when the siege struck and you no nothing about it. This way he could have a wounded friend pass the quest to you (cheesy, but works) without screwing up the backstory and you are both happy. Also, this gives you a reason to continue adventuring... You want to see all the types of architecture in the world. |
| der_gogo08-17-04, 06:07 PM | I mean hey, the GM tries to make up a story and you are upset about it? If you don't like what your GM does u start arguing with him it should be the way how you like it?... Come on! |
| Encard08-17-04, 06:37 PM | I'm curious... Did you talk to your DM at all about how you wanted to build your character before actually writing him up? Because the impression I'm getting from the post is that you didn't, your DM had a plot figured out for your characters, and the details of that don't go along with what you were hoping for the plot to be based on your char's background. Also, I'm a bit confused... Were you saying in your post that you don't think your char should be adventuring at all? Part of your post sounded like that to me, but want to be sure. If that's the case, then I think you may have just made up a character concept that's incompatible with what your DM wants to do with the game (i.e. not staying in the same location building temples or whatnot). I think that, if you're going to be using any part of this character, you'll need to at least compromise somewhat. Jnrhayz had a good idea... Maybe your character wants to examine all the architecture he can before making his masterpiece temple, so that he can be sure to take the best of all styles and design the greatest temple ever built? Something of that nature. And you won't have much opportunity to build anything if your race gets wiped out. Now, if your DM knew you were making a Githzerai and neglected to tell you about the changes he'd made, that's pretty bad on his part. Those are the sort of changes a player should find out about the moment he tells the DM about his character concept. Of course, if he didn't know until you were done... Well, can't say its really his fault. In any case, I'd suggest talking to the DM some more about how you can put your ideas for plot and character together. You don't really have any other choice, after all, if you want to use this character in his game. |
| Pyriel08-17-04, 11:46 PM | one of my regular dms is pretty strict about character pasts and why your adventuring, so i learn to live with it and end up usually getting his help with it becuz his world is pretty strict. You just have to learn that the DM controls the events in his world and can change your past if something that he has planned (your race being nearly extinct or them being at war with something else) is going on to something that would involve you. |
| thofighta08-18-04, 05:05 AM | Well, he made me a story, I accepted it, I wrote the finishing parts of my character, he changed it.... Then I got a little upset because why? I thought we had agreed on the story I already had made, but anyway, I have beaten the dust and taken that story. Figured out its his usuall way of behaviour and that i would probably loose all my gold if I refuse that story. He's a pri** that way :D Well, anyway, talk it out might seem a good idea, and its impossible not too since I spend about regularly 5 hours with him a day.... Anyway, I also found out it wasnt as bad as I thought, when I figured out that I could have been the merchant of my Monastery, selling stuff to "material planers" and therefore (by seeing all the beautiful architecture) wanting to become an architect, bringing out the best from my own culture and so on... becoming much more socialised than the rest of my people :) Tho I wonder when he are thinking to give us any chanse of lifting the Illithid siege on the monastery... Githzerais are slightly less voulnerable to Illithids than other people, but still I am only a 7th lvl monk :P BTW, to the 4 of you that answered, thanx for your opinions :) To the other 126, youre not having enough opinions :P |
| Kingside_Bishop08-18-04, 10:36 AM | If my players come up with a backstory that conflicts with the plot of my world or my campaign storyline, I usually ask the player to change his storyline or nix the character. I won't accept a story that interferes with my world. But I usually work with my players to develop a new storyline, it's better than just throwing a new one at them... and expecting them to just take it. It sounds like your DM planned at least part of his campaign on your besieged monastary -- while this isn't good DM'ing (way too linear), I could see where he would be frustrated. Maybe his whole plot went up in smoke when you got angry. Off Topic: is prick considered a swear word? |
| thofighta08-18-04, 11:21 AM | Off topic answer: Don't know if it is... just didnt want to suddenly find out it was... :D The DM was kinda making up the plotlines of the campaign at the moment we created our PC's... It interferred nought with his so far plans |
| Ipsissimus08-18-04, 01:12 PM | I think your DM just like to get a rise out of you or a control freak. My DM loved my background story so much he only changed the timeline, as how long it too for me to get to the end of my story which was fine and still very credible. Off topic: As far as prick being a curse word, it's all about context...oh dear, I believe that cactus did prick my finger it did..oooo it smarts. The other being, your DM is a _____. |
