| ShipJacker79102-04-04, 06:16 PM | Hi, I am new to the game and i was wondering what class i should play. the members in my group talked me into being a rogue. i was wondering is that a good choice? if so what should i do to play it corectly. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this thread.:smirk: |
| Dun Fe'Ran02-04-04, 06:52 PM | A rogue is an excellent choice. A fairly simple character to learn, and very versatile. How you should play it depends on how you want to play it. is it going to be a charisma man, or a multi-function dungeon-dissassembler, or a stealthy soon-to-be assassin-like figure? Regardless, dex and int are probably the most important stats, with charisma and wisdom playing a close second. strength and con are always nice, but take the back seat. |
| Fingon02-04-04, 06:59 PM | Well, I had a DM who made you start as a fighter if it was your first time playing. It worked very well. You get lots of cool feats and can smash things pretty well and don't have to worry about spells and lots of skills. |
| Luminous Crayon02-04-04, 07:19 PM | Fighters are a good class to start with. Basically, anything with a relatively limited variety of abilities is easier to learn with, because there are less options to keep track of. I would absolutely avoid spellcasters, especially nonspontaneous spellcasters. I have DMed for new players starting as sorcerors, but they're usually in way over their heads. |
| ShipJacker79102-04-04, 07:23 PM | thanx for the input.:) i will use it wisley but i think i will stay with the rogue. i want it to be steathy and once in a while deal a ton of damage. Will he be good at skills. if so what ones a nessary. also feats:D |
| Addi8302-04-04, 09:00 PM | You'll want to max out the tumble skill (to the maximum, not above it, the max for a skill is your level +3) And even get ranks in jump because of the synergy bonus it gives to tumble when you get 5 ranks. Other critical skills are search, disable device, open lock, balance and maybe bluff or diplomacy. Feats: If you want to go into melee, you'll want some feats to help you there, spring attack is great, and so are dodge and mobility (the prereqs for it) and weapon finesse (unless you have unusually high strength for a rogue). Other feats you might like are Improved Initiative, Acrobatic, Lightning reflexes, and perhaps Two-weapon-fighting later on. If you have a bad will save you might want to think about Iron will, and if you have a bad fortitude save, you might like great fortitude. If you are going to focus on ranged attacks, you'll want to take a Point blank shot, or Precise shot, followed by rapid shot. You can use the tumble skill to get into positions to flank (thereby being able to sneak attack) without getting attacks of opportunity, your DM can explain the details of this. Play a human if you can, the extra skills and feat are a lot more useful than most of the stuff the other races get. Although you might have to get goggles of darkvision later on. If you don't want to play a human for some reason, you might want an elf or a halfling for the extra dex, or a dwarf or half-orc (not recommended for your first time) for their darkvision. For equipment I recommend a shortsword or rapier, and some kind of bow for longer range. You'll want the best armor for your dexterity, so unless you have a dex higher than 18, thats going to be chain shirt, but a studded leather if you cant afford that. (a masterwork studded leather is probably a better choice than a regular chainshirt). A rogue that does a lot of fighting would be well advised to take a level or two of fighter or ranger along the way. |
| ShipJacker79102-04-04, 09:46 PM | thx for all the input again. |
| Perseus02-08-04, 05:51 AM | Try beefing up your Hide and Move Silently skills. Remaining unseen will help you to avoid patrols and strike from the shadows. |
| SmiloDan02-08-04, 08:50 AM | I would also recommend maxing out Spot and Listen. They're some of the most rolled skills in the game, and can protect you from OTHER rogues and marauding monsters. Bluff is a good skill, if only because 5 ranks in (maxed out to level 2) gives you a +2 bonus Diplomacy, Disguise, Intimidate, Perform (acting), Sleight of Hand. Not too shabby. Also, there is a combat manuver called Feinting in Combat. It's a standard action, so it means you can't attack that round, but if you make a Bluff check that beats your opponent's Sense Motive check (who does get a bonus equal to his Base Attack Bonus), the opponent is denied his Dex to AC the next attack you make, so you can sneak attack him. If you are the only rogue in the party, they will depend on you for dealing with traps and locks, so you will need to max out Disable Device, Open Locks, and Search. If you play a human rogue of average Int, I would recommend: Bluff, Disable Device, Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Open Lock, Search, Spot, Tumble. If you have a bonus to Int, then I would recommend Use Magic Device, Climb, Jump, Diplomacy in that order. |
