Ok.. alot of wierd stuff just happened in my last run of the campaign my GM is running

This is the gist of the storyline so far... ok... Asked by the elves to take the Eye of Grummish and get it destroyed... under the Temple of Grummish (which grummish currently is at) Now wierd stuff has happened time and time again (i ended up with 2 pair of wings and turning blue for awhile)

Now i was a Lawful Evil Human.. but got along somewhat with others due to shared goals of wealth, and knowledge that i was defeating a greater enemy then myself with the group around. SO... heres the problem

Lawful Evil Human Necromancer triggers a Trap set by some uberpowerful guy long ago... now im Perminantly an Orc... and ive lost contact with a portion of the weave... the Transmutation portion... defining this means i can no longer cast, be affected, touch, change, use, or sense transmutation.
I cannot be Hasted or Timestoped, Spider Climb or Reverse Gravity.. and as such.. i cannot polymorph myself back into the Chronotyryn that i was before hand (which i think is the real reason the Dm turned me into an orc)

So... now a LE orc necromancer new to being an orc.. i think he would react as such..... wait till the group is about to destroy the eye.. then kill them, and take it to Grummish.... best way for my character to both stay alive.. and perhaps gain power and wealth in the process... the problem comes from the unfair fight that will Ensue...... there are 4 other people in the party... none matter other then the last, but ill mention them none the less... 1. Lv21 Fighter with longsword (dex style) 2. 21 level Druid (unfimiliar with spells and books), 3. 21 Level bard/rogue (semi-knowledgeable but Viel of undeath will fix that sneak attack quick)

Now for the fourth person, and the person i clash with the most.. the "enemy" in my books.
Chaotic Good Elven lv 22Ranger/ 1Fighter/ 1monk/ 1bard/ 5cleric/ 1druid/ 1sorcerer/ 1rogue/ 1wizard/ 1barbarian
with a +12 longsword with Holy Burst
The DM expected us to stay a team im sure when he made this guy this way... we pieced together some ancient epic sword and it granted him everything except the 21 levels of ranger... so heres the delimma... me a
LE Orc 3 Wiz/3 Clr/14 True Necromancer/2 Mystic Thurge with Automatic Still spell as my epic feat.. but at least 20s in most stats due to magic.. is going to fight with him.
Lets just say i have a 30 wis and 30 int for the sake of this fight.. and i have a ring that gives me Fasthealing 30
and i have 300 hp with a 36 ac.

How am i to stop him... and quickly at that.... im looking for any Tactics you people can give to stop him as fast as possible without using any Transmutaiton spells.. no additional items.. any metamagic feats and anything else you can think of.... The other three ill take out fast.. as i have about a DC35+ on any spell i do (due to high mods and feats)

I need help on this.. he outlevels me by alot.. and has Perfect Two Weapon Fighting too.. so if he gets close enough to hit me.. im dead for sure.

Im at a loss for once =P
I look forward to your replies ot my odd situaiton.

GO ORCS!

Did the DM have classes to spare??

Sheesh, that character has almost every core class in the PHB book...

Barbarian 1/Bard 1/Cleric 5/Druid 1/Fighter 1/Monk 1/Ranger 22/Rogue 1/Sorcerer 1/Wizard 1

Anyway, there's a bright spot for you. If the character's wearing armour he'll be subject to Arcane Spell Failure for the Sorcerer/Wizard Class and IIRC will loose the wisdom bonus/flurry of blows granted by the Monk class.

If the armour worn is medium or more, he will also be subject to Arcane Spell Failure for the Bard Class.

If the the Veil of Undead does what I think it does, it will negate the Rogue's sneak attack as Undead are immune to them.

So all in all, that should be 5 classes that for the most part only add to hp's and saves. Yay.

Continuing:

If the armour is made of metal, the character looses all Druid abilities(Unless it started out as non-metal and got altered to metal via the use of a spell or special ability)

If the character wears Heavy Armour(not likely) the barbarian won't be able to use the fast movement ability. It can still rage though.

All in all, having all these 1-level dips into all these classes hardly benefits the character in any way.

By level 22, 0-level and 1st level Bard/Sorcerer/Wizard/Druid spells should be easily negated. Even the 3 spell levels of cleric shouldn't be that difficult to overcome/survive.

The sneak attack ability from the rogue shouldn't add that much to damage, and is ineffective if you manage to turn yourself into an undead of sorts.

The turning undead would've been a problem is he pursued the cleric career, but by all standards simply picking an undead that has more hitdice then he can turn(Cleric level +4 = 9+HD IIRC) should nullify any turning attempts he could muster.

The rage ability from the barbarian adds a minimal amount of damage(+2) and using constitution draining spells will be fun...and very necromanticy.

The flurry of blows does add an extra attack, but only if he's unarmed or using monk weapons. Otherwise the ability doesn't work.
Furthermore most monk abilities require the character is not wearing armour.

All in all, I'd say you're facing a Ranger 22 with enhanced saves and hitpoints. The special abilities from the other classes should be negligable at your levels.

Go for it.

I'm not farmiliar with True Necromancer, but I'm assuming it uses the wiz/sor spell list, not clerical.

Imprisonment is probably your best bet. (the spell, not the town militia) If that uber-broken sword gives him ALL the benefits of those levels...yikes! even the rangers poor will saves will be getting +2 from half those level 1 classes, I'm figuring he has at LEAST a 12 base will save, +wis bonus, and if he has any other items covering this weak area....

The good thing is imprisonment will give him a -4 cause you know something about him, but I imagine he'll still have a +15 at least, and then if he has any spell resistance (seeing as your all epic, I'm sure he does) that's just more annoying. prep as many as you can, unless your absolutely sure the first one will work, if it DOES fail, 2-3 Maximized Enervations and/or Energy Drain will reduce his nasty saves and hit dice, then hit him with another Imprisonment or 2, if he's still standing and you got good hits off the Enervations/Energy Drains, you can try a couple Finger of Death's, Disintegrate, and if you can get him low enough Power Word: Kill.

Or if you feel up to it, open with Energy Drain for 2d4 negative levels with no save except magic resistance. If you land the powerful max rolls, he'll be working with a -12 penalty to save aganist the Imprisonment spell.

Disarming him of the sword would be a good start, though you may have to use the Grease spell for this...if if works. Other than that use undead to harry him in melee as you pummel him with spells.

Last time I checked, Ray of Enfeeblment has no save and is a Necromancy spell. All it requires is a successful ranged touch attack, which True Strike (being an arcane divination) should be able to ensure for you.

Repeat this process until the Ranger can no longer lift his sword (not very long at all if you Empower and/or Maximize the Ray of Enfeeblement).

The Necromancy spells the cause fatigue, exhaustion, and level drain also need to be considered, as they all reduce Str and Dex (and Level) that only comes back after HOURS of rest. Bestow Curse is nice too; especially the -4 to all rolls and -6 to a stat (Wis or Con; either way, reduce saves).

Put lots of undead between the two of you, if only to keep him from meleeing you. Failing undead, just lots of sword-fodder, as you no doubt know that a group of PCs vs. one spellcaster - no matter how powerful - normally equals a dead spellcaster.

If possible, set the stage for your attack by summoning/creating multiple shadows and spectres, unhallowing (tie Dimensional Anchor to this, to prevent escapes), and desecrating the area - ideally there is an altar to your deity there to act as a focus - before starting your attacks.

Lastly, if possible, use alignment bashing spells. In your case, Order's Wrath and Dispel Good, Dictum and Blasphemy. If worried about the potential of saves, use Shield of Law and Unholy Aura to protect yourself.

All very good ideas.. thank you... also for an Update on a few things... True necromacer uses BOTH Divine and Arcane spells... you gain one effective level in both your divine and arcane classes each time you level (similar to mystic thurge) as it stands i have a caster level of 18 in both divine and arcane spells.

Now for the ranger.. i agree with the previous post about his +5 Platemail of the void (that abosbrs 100 levels of spells btw.. which is BS) keeping him form using his abiliities.

I didnt remember the platemail till this morning.. Im thinking im just outta luck unless somehow i can hop over that platemail's absorption factor...

The main reason why i wanna do this is both for RP purposes.. but also because the DM always favors this individual over others (especially me as i normally play LE CN NE characters that he doenst trust me with) Still tho... when he said that the Ranger gained one effective level in every core class, then 5 more levels in cleric.. i was thinking "ok.. this has gotten out of hand"

So I want to end this campaign and start anew...

Btw Viel of Death gives you all the benefits of being undead... Immune to crits, sneak attacks, death attacks, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, ect ect ect.

Also i have a Permanent Hide Life spell cast on me which to my understanding of the rules... negates the ability to die from normal damage. It says instead of dying at -10 hp, im mearely staggered, also i have a Staff of the Cosmos.. which should help some to get past his Absorbtion thing as all the spells on it are Intensified

I think im going to go with the Energy Drain/ Enervation/ Avasculate bit... all reducing his levels. I have a rod of Empower, twin spell, repeat spell, and a few others... so im thinking an Empowred Twin energy drain would do well... 3d6 Levels x2.... Im pretty much setting my spell list to Keep me alive, and drop him as fast as possible..

But his Saves, HP, 9 attacks around at godly bonus, and a few other things bother me (+12 sword is some BS too btw)

Also he has wings due to a mishap with an artifact (similar to my 2 pair of wings from the same mishap) so he can fly after me.

So heres what im thinking
Prebattle:
Lutzaen's Frequent Jaunt, Viel of Death, Displacement, Superior Invis, Globe of Invuln, Spell Immunity, Spell Resistance, and anything to possibly make my spells have higher levels or higher DCs... Cleric Beneficial spells... maybe a Contingency of True Res.. and Animate every corpse i find along the way to where I think it will be time to fight..

Start of Battle"
Mordikainen's Disjunction should put the other people out of the sky atleast (except the druid who has as likely of chance ot sitting and watching then actually fighting against me) ((shes his wife and doenst like the unfair treatment he gets either)) Possibly banishment to send a few of them away as we are not on our home plane at all and none of them have a way back (i was major mode of transportation)... Also possibly Greater Curses or something of the like to drop thier Will/Fort saves... My DCs are pretty high as it is... I have the ability to both Wish and Miracle... but the DM will try to pervert anything i say.. so they must be well planned.

I got a week to plan this... and it might be two weeks (not sure,) till it goes down... Im confident by then... they will be unable to stop my wrath.... they should of never turned me into an Orc.... silly humans...

What happens when his armor absorbs over 100 spell levels? Does it explode? Disintegrate? Become inert? Reset? If it resets, does it do so every day? Does it absorb automatically, or when willed to do so (like after his SR check fails)? Will your Mord's Disjunction disjoin it, or will your spell be absorbed?

As spells are your primary method of attack, you really need to do something about that armor.

Undead, summoned, or charmed Rust Monsters or Disenchanters, perhaps? I am sure both would find the armor extra tasty.

Since you can cast both Miracle and Wish, you might use one to get rid of that suit of armor, or at least render its absorption ability nonfunctional. Word it wisely, as I suspect your DM is the type to mangle any Wish that comes his way.

Another method to kill the armor might be to cause a number of powerful spellcasters to attack the PCs, targetting the ranger with spells. Then you attack after or during the battle (depending on how you enticed the other spellcasters to attack) and not fear losing too many spells.

Though it may burn out a more potent magic item, perhaps charged items (staves, likely) used to maximum effect targetting the Ranger can burn out his absorption so you can bring your real spells to bear.

If you manage to disarm him, cast Grease on the sword. As it is no longer held, it has its own low save instead of the Ranger's high save. And Greasy weapons are hard to hold.

I don't suppose your DM is dating the ranger's player? :) He sounds awfully overpowered to me.

According to my calculations, a Rng 22/Brb 1/Brd 1/Clr 5/Drd 1/Fgt 1/Mnk 1/Rog 1/Sor 1/Wiz 1 has base save bonuses equal to Fort +25, Ref +20, Will +21. With his Monty Haul equipment, I'm pretty sure he would have at least 30-35 in each save, right? Even with a save DC of 35, you'll need to wear him down for anything to work on him.

With that armor of his, I guess your best bet is to cast spells that don't affect him directly.

However, the bottom line here is that I would be highly surprised if the DM allows this character to lose the battle. ;)

take him on when he is asleep and curse him. 50% chance that he will get to act. also imprisonment is nice and ottos irresistable dance. don't forget to Improved invisibility yourself when you go in for the kill. Also try conjuring some demons with planar binding to keep him occupied. prefereabily (sry cant spell) some where you can give him 20 save or die spell/round he will fail eventualy.

new tactic.....don't FIGHT him...just kill him. cdg while he's sleeping should work, or to be more interesting...poison him, heck your killing off the whole party right? poison them all! if you can get a few hairs and fingernail clippings off the ranger, a good alchemist should be able to brew you a poison that will instantly kill him.

Do you have savage species? If you do, try skeletal guard, which is a really good spell. If not, I'll post it later.

First, I question why you would change your allegiance so suddenly to Grummsh? Being polymorphed doesn't change your mental stats, nor does it give you a new personality. As it stands, you felt that you were at the advantage going *against* Grummsh, I think your character would still feel this way despite becoming an orc.

However, if you choose to fight them, do it the smart way. As someone mentioned already, the smart way is a surprise attack/coup-de-grace. How? At night, teleport to a large city and by some *really* nasty contact/injury poison (black lotus or whatever). Initiate coup-de-grace with poisoned weapon.

Ok... lets fill in some more gaps... first... no.. the two are not dating lol...

Secondly.. the armor... it has 100 levels of absorption per user.... so when 100 points are gone, it remains this awesome armor (it has more effects just none are important to the situation) just wihout the ability...

i own every book witht he exception of Sandstorm and Lords of Madness (and i think one more but don tremember)

Im thinking Mord's Disjunction to get rid of the armor, ill Twin it with a rod so i get two out of one shot...

Then i got Sudden Empower and Sudden Maximize, ill use those on an Energy Drain after i drop his SR some should dake 9-12 levels away... and i still have 2 more uses of Energy drain and a few other things... im thinking of just Banishing or Dismisal on the others in the group, as none of us are native to the plane.... I have Imprisionments lined up.... Renewal pact from Complete Divine... Contengencys and a few other permanent spells. Hide Life is included in these as well. Ive also memorized alot of Banish/Imprision/ect ect.. and things that require alot of Will/Fort saves (avoiding Reflex saves due to Imp. Evasion)

Pretty much anything that will accrue Penalties, lower SR and Saves, do ability or level drain, and get rid of that stupid armor.. Damage isnt imporant.. i want to take him out of the game as fast as possible... and thats how... doing 180 damage is nothing to someone with such a high HP and what not.

Also... for the person asking about a change in allegiance.. its not so much that im devoting myself to a new god.. but that i have a higher chance of survival with an Orc god.. then siding with the Elven god that wants me to destroy the orcs (ie what i am now)

Im also siding with things that allow no save but have SR... i can punch through his SR far easier then his Saves... Also he has a Celestial Template now so hes an Outsider... so im thinking Subvert Planar Essence should help too...

any more ideas? it might go down this weds, or next weds.. btw the druid is out of the picture now... she is out of town

Hehe, Here are my general tactics.

1st, Muster your forces.
Get as many undead as you can to soften him up a bit. If you have destruction retrobution, swarms of zombies make excellent cannon fodder (he can save for half). As some one pointed out, you can animate rust monsters, and then awaken them. They then regain all their extrodinary abilities (I.E. Rust attack). On top of that, what ever other nasty undead you can round up.

2. Buff up.
I normally favor ghost form, but since transmutation is barred, use the best you have.

3. Suprise him.
Pick a spot where you can ambush him and try to get a suprise round.

4. Attack
Normally I try to go right off the bat with a time stop, but again, you can't do transmutation. Run him over with rust monsters, and blast him with avasculate mass. If your lucky, he'll be immobilized. Bast him with a few avascalates, while your minions attack, and then try to finish him off after his hp has been halved a few times.

Being unfamiliar with the spell (or ability?) avasculate, I am hoping it is NOT a misspelling of the word emasculate (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=emasculate).

Which would be a wicked spell in and of itself.

If you can attack these people while they are sleeping you will have absolutely no problem killling them.

He's epic. Unless he's stupid (this means really, really, really stupid), he's going to be sleeping in a pretty secure place.

Without the proper precautions, even a level 20 party goes down fast.

Incorrect:
"Hey, lets camp here for the night."
"Okay, Bob the ranger gets first watch."

Elsewhere:
"Okay, potion of improved invisibility, black lotus poison, silence spell, dagger, cloak of the bat, amulet of undetection, boots of teleport, ring of spell turning."
"Lock and load."
Level 5 Rogue / Level 8 Sorc
*Random Illusion spell to make it look like sleeping portion of party is okay*
*Coup de Grace!*
*Coup de Grace!*
*Coup de Grace!*
Three down, one to go.

-----------------------------------------

Correct:
"Mage's magnificent mansion, okay?"
"Okay."
"Lets sleep."

-----------------------------------------

I would assume that the aforementioned ranger has some kind of protection. He'd better.

you could always try and convince one of the other party members to join your side in the battle, whether it be their own choice to or you using an ehchantment to get them to. i imagine that level 21 fighter's Will save wont match to your spell save DC.
Dungeon Master

05-18-05, 01:54 AM
Yes, high level PCs are often very well protected versus external threats. However, they are rarely as well protected against a fellow adventurer who betrays them ;)

So what if they cast magnificent mansion? You're probably in it with them!

Your looking at this from the wrong angle...

First you need to get the party to split up. Then have a Dominate person spree, or kill them.

Summon things... not necessarily undead, but creatures that can cast spells. Get that armor thing out of the way. That armor is going to be rough.

One excellent suggestion I would take is get improved blink up on you. Summon things, Dominate other things and attack the party. Your actions are merely quicken spells and quicken rods then you ready an action to blink away from him whenever he gets within striking distance. If he charged he's done. If he moved... well all he has left is one standard action, he can't charge, but he can reach you. Once he reaches you ready an action to blink away again as his first strike heads towards you. Bam, once he's made his attack he's done. He only has a move-equivelant left so at most he can just reach you.

In the mean time your summoned creatures and dominated allies are wearing down his darn armor. Eventually it will be down and you can start the energy drains/touch of idiocy(my personal favorite incapaciation method is touch of idioicy). He'll be comatose or dead very fast.

Who's carring the eye? See if you can carry it.

If not maybe call who ever is carrying it over to discuss something leaving the others together, then dismissal on the others since you all are not on your own plane / are outsiders. I *think* dismissal just area affect spell so would affect the ranger since not targeting him specifically. Then kill, offer to let person x go after they hand over the eye. If ranger carring the eye, still a valid tatic to get rid of the other party members without to much fuss. Then concentrate on the ranger using many previous discussed ways.

Replace the eye with a look a like, they do the Mt doom thing to the fake eye and then everyone goes their own way, with no one the wiser except you of course..

make the ranger want to get rid of / get out of the armor. Does he sleep in it? if so / not summon animal(s) scopion, snake, something poisonous and small, crawl into armor, bit/sting him... he takes off armor then kablooie....

Being unfamiliar with the spell (or ability?) avasculate, I am hoping it is NOT a misspelling of the word emasculate (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=emasculate).

Which would be a wicked spell in and of itself.

Just a thought...

(threadjack)

Avasculate is a 7th level spell that reduces a target's hitpoints by half. I don't remeber if it is a Ray (touch attack), or if a Fort save negates it. I'd check the book (Libris Mortis), but I haven't got it on me.

The particulars are quite nasty - I don't know if describing the spell in any more detail would violate CoC, but here's a hint: The spells name comes from the latin (I believe) words 'a', meaning away from, and "vascule", meaning the blood vessels. I have used it several times in one of my games, to profound (and graphic, and somewhat gross) effect.

So when you drew that connection... :twitch:

(/threadjack)

And to the OP: You could probably just Wail of the Banshee / Horrid Wilting him to death with no trouble. They're area effects, and are not therefore subject to absorbtion (I believe, unless this is a special "This player will never die from magic effects" kind of absorbtion...) Especially good once you've already got other suggestions in place. The undead army idea is absolutely golden, just make sure that if you're going to be creating them that you can command them when you're done. Otherwise, you will be very, very sorry :weep: (I made that mistake once. Just once. "What do you mean they're free-willed?! Oh :censored: !!" )

He died rather quickly actually folks... I wont leave you hanging on the outcome.. heres the play by play:

Before Fight: Tons of Buffs... Energy Immunity, Greater Spell Immunity, Globe of invuln, ect. ect. ect.

First Round: Mordikainen's Disnjunction, (at this point the DM decided to say the armor is an artifact.. which in turn he ended up messing himself up because i had a 21% chance of destroying it... which thank god got a 18) and the armor became Inert (his sword did not tho)

The DM and i bought agreed tho that this was a Suprise round, as to the fact that i let them wander off a bit.. then cast on it from behind... they all had to roll checks to see if they could determin the source of the casting.. which only two succeeded.. the Rogue and the Ranger.

Somehow i beat thier initiative too which suprised me quite a bit

Second Round: Twinned Force Cage... imprisoning the Rogue and Ranger, the only two able to do anything that round.

Third Round: Forbiddance (preventing them from leaving the cage), the Figher and Druid that were left shoot/cast on me and both decide tot ake a 5 foot step (into the forbiddance taking damage from thier failed will saves)

Fourth Round: Banishment/Dismissal type spell to remove the fighter and druid from my sight... leaving two prisoners...

Fifth Round, Energy Drain, with Sudden Empower and Sudden Maximize, using a Twin Spell Rod... 8+1d4x2 negative levels... i ended up gettina 3 and a 4... so 23 negative levels... the Ranger is down to level 12 and -23 on all saves.. Rogue Throws a dagger and hits me (!!!) dealing unoticeable ammount of damage (Viel of Undeath protecting me from poison)

Sixth Round: Chain lightning from Staff of Cosmos.. deals 180 damage to Ranger.. ranger drops dead. I grin at the Rogue (who is a cute girl in RL) as she almost dies to the damage by itself.

Last Round: One more shot from the Chainlightning on the Staff of Cosmos.. she dies...

At least i thought that was the last round..... Moments later the fighter and druid show up again (appearing int he previous room we were in and rushing in.. apparently they had told the Dm that they were teleporting back and he told them they couldnt,.. so they came up with that tactic.

The Fighter pops off at me in person... saying he will kill me now cuase i used up all my spells... now what wizard in thier right mind... EVER uses up ALL thier spells =P

Round ONE again!: Fighter and Druid charge into room (im suprised this time apparently) fighter shoots his bow at me and hits... (lucky roll) and the druid casts some buffs on the two.

Round Two: Finnaly my turn.. fighter fires off a few more shots and a few land.. he gets some good damage rolls but i have alot of life for a caster. (mainly due to the epic necklace i have for con) druid begins summoning spells.. she thinks the more targets i have the better.
I like her idea.. so instead of Animate the corpse of the Ranger and the Rogue to attack them.. Ranger attacking the Fighter... Rogue attacking the Druid.

Round Three: Druid summoned a big ole elemental last round.. fire type... Now she is casting Creeping doom. fighter tried to kill ranger.. but alas.. Briliant energy weapons do not work on undead =P... so he gets beat up... rogue hits the druid but she had succeeded her concentration check. Im smiling of course.. and i cast a spell (mostly toying with the two) Summon Elemental Monolith (Water) ... to play with her fire elemental...

Round Four: Druid fails concentration check as Rogue does staggering damage to her.... Fighter gets hit for switching weapons in combat, but wields his rapier now instead of bow.. he does minimal damage ot undead while undead ranger does devestating damage in return. (its the sword hes carrying)... I decided the show is at its end... one shot from Staff of Cosmos: chain lightning.. both targets take 180 damage...

Round Five: Druid tries to cast Teleport but fails... she forgot that she was still in the Forbiddance (which suprised her when i told her the duration is permanent) The Fighter uses a Greater horn of Blasting which the DM decides that at such a close range, it at least knocks the undead down and away.. i said fine.. the Fire elemental dies this round... I click the staff one more time.. and then there were none.....

Round Six: i have 4 Undead followers, and a water elemental monolith at my command.... with taking less then 100 damage total... THE END

I think it was far easier of a battle then i expected really... the only hard part was the armor (and disjoining the armor and a few other items took away the rangers SR which made my life 1000 times easier)

Thank you all for all your help... the DM was royally ******.. but the guy who played the Ranger (Matt) LOVED IT!... He said that was the most fun of the entire campaign and that he didnt appreciate being put in that spot by the DM...

But who can blame him... if you were given a +12 keen, speed, flaming burst, icy, holy power, dread, shocking blast longsword.... you would take it too =P

Same goes with the armor...
