| Lakaniss03-12-07, 11:02 PM | Our current group had a weekly session of DnD for 3 years now, changing canpaign each year. Before that(before 3.0 got out) me and 2 of my friend we playing DnD for fun when we had no video games. We currently are 5 Players + the Dm which is this year one of my two friend from the first group (originally the other one of the first group). The 2 other players came whit us 3 years ago and they are one of our friend and her boyfriend ( whos just here to kill monsters and cause her girlfriend want him to join us ). The other one is a friend for our DM which we didnt knew before this year game. Now let me explain the matter! Our current game began in novembre, for the first month, the new player wasnt there. The party was 4 childhood Good Humans friend (Druid, Favored Soul, Wizard and Fighter ) until the new player cam whit an Orc Barbarian who manage to kill everything that he wanted and when we argued we oftenly get into fight whit his character and he always ended up killing them anyway. The orc was only a Mercenary for our current quest so we manage to ''accept'' him. Recently we splited the party to search helps faster to save our colony from a pirate fleet invasion (our colony is on ancient ruins of great secrets and treasures). Sadly in the forest, me (druid) and the orc got killed by a Advance Tyrannosaurus in the jungle on the road back to the colony ( He managed to critical me and i died in his stomach on round 2, the barbarian did him lots of damage before dying, but it wasnt enough). So the party is left whit one of theyr childhood friend and the orc merceneray not coming back after a week, one week before the pirate attack. On the game session after, we both came back whit Wizards (Me Diviner/Divine Oracle/Master Specialist , him Ultimate Magnus) But since we are way more experienced player then the other players and got the opportunity to make level 9 characters from scratch (which often make better build then lv 1 to 9 for roleplay reasons and item finding) our Wizard are way more optimised (but not cheesy, i dont even have any atacking spell , thx to batman wizards guide! And the other guy Mage is just better then her for blasting spell since he has a Wand Build whit his ultimate magnus). The girl in our game is...a little bit sensitive... She has some problems for exteriorising herself and it sometime end up whit her crying for multiple reasons (like the fact that we steal all her roleplay because we speak to fast and by the time she think about awnsers we changed topic). Now our new characters are integretated and whit our spells and me being a god of Scrying (Dc 27) we came like heroes to the colony and did all the roleplay me and him (in our background we come from the same guilds and are kinda badass cool ). Now she didnt tell us, but i saw that she is really sad because we did everything last game and that our wizards just are plain better then hers (she was even jalous that the other guys familiar could talk (raven) and not her corollax (which is just plain better then a raven anyway!)), but its to late to change PC, we cant just switch them again each game! How do we settle this? I feel bad for her and i dont wanna ruin her fun! |
| Rillek_Denar03-12-07, 11:39 PM | Help her optimize her character to fill a different niche with style. |
| Lady_Dragon03-12-07, 11:41 PM | Uh, why CAN'T she switch characters? I mean, since you have so much more experience than here, help her build another more optimized character and retire her wizard. You're mage-heavy already. If you think that will prompt her to want to toss out characters every game, which I suppose is a possibility, then talk to the DM. Have him give her a cool magic item to balance out the weaknesses of her build. |
| ShadowDragon868503-13-07, 12:49 AM | Help her rebuild her Wizard. Give her a copy of the Spell Compendium. She's 9th level, that means she has access to 5th-level spells. 5th-level Wizard spells from the SC that can make any wizard a force to be reckoned with: Ironguard, Lesser: Makes you immune to nonmagical metal. Gee, there's how many pirates swinging mundane cutlasses? That's nice! :) Arc of Lightning: Absoloutely punishing against idiots stupid enough to line up in a straight line. Call Zelekhut: If you happen to be Lawful... Can't get much better than summoning an Inevitable to do battle for you. Pirates are Chaotic, so it'd have little problem helping. Lesser Dragon Ally: If you can scrape up loads of cash to spend, a few castings of this spell will turn the tide of battle utterly. Hell, hire a Bronze dragon to swim out to sea and sink them before they even make landfall. :) Fireburst, Greater. Surrounded by mundane pirates with munane cutlasses who're rapidly figuring out that they can't hit you with swords but they can just grapple you? Not anymore! :) Prismatic Ray: More mid-level BBEG fights and Big Bad Evil Lieutenant fights have been shut down before they began by this spell than by any other ability in the game. (Don't you love rolling "Banished to another plane"? :) ) Spiritwall: Not many of those pirates will be eager to charge down the gangplank if you throw one of these up on the side of their ship. (Or in the gates to your fortress.) After all, 1-HD Warriors really, REALLY don't like saving against negative levels, and even big bads can get wrecked by it. Fly, Mass: Want to really torq off those pirates? Land an entire squad of the island's best fighters, clad in full plate-mail, on the deck of their vessel while they're still trying to sail it in. Alternatively, float all the best archers and spellcasters up to ruin their vessel from afar. And that's only the 5th-level spells. There's a lot of 4th-level spells that are hell on wheels against mobbed masses of low-level warriors. (Or you could always go back to that third-level bastion of wizardry, Fireball.) |
| kelvinaw27303-13-07, 09:14 AM | Well, point one, when you made up new characters did you think about what you needed in the party or did you go for what was badass and cool? There are certain roles that need to be fulfilled, and certain ones that don't. For you to both choose wizards, when there is already one in a five-character group seems a bit strange to me. It sounds like you didn't give the rest of the party a second thought before you started. Now as to how you extricate yourselves from this ... there is no easy way unless you decide to change characters and sail the wizards off into the sunset. It isn't a case of you may steal her thunder and render her redundent in the group, because you already did. |
| On_the_wings_of_TPK03-13-07, 12:13 PM | Didn't you mention that she was upset about not being able to RPO more, becuase you guys are too quick for her? Simple solution: Slow the :censored: down! Seriousely wait for her to answer, have a little patients. Also mention it to the DM. have him/her make special encounters to suit her better. It aint hard, just think about how she plays her character, and have an encounter carter to that. Secondly, why did you two make a pair of wizards, when your party already has one. then make wizards that are juts plain better then hers? That was a jerkish thing to do. Can't help but think you did to show off. I recomend retiring your chracters with an appology, and make two new ones that are not wizards, or anything else in the party. |
| Lakaniss03-13-07, 12:16 PM | Well the way our Wizards got introduced by our Dm and whit the background we have ( we are on a mission to actually discover the truth on this island and do whatever we can to stop the event that killed the last civilisation that had those temples because our guild masters discovered it could had a bigger impact on the whole world ) our wizards cant just wake up and decide to go away. {We did not consult each other before making wizard, we did not plan on having 3 wizard in the party. And my diviner is a batman wizard who banned evocation, i didnt want to steel her job on killing oponents whit magic but to offer more versatility whit field control, outside battle spells and some buff/debuff. The other guy made a pure blaster who doesnt outshine her yet, but will probl soon he get 1 or 2 more level} The girl wanted to make an Arcane Archer ( i did not mention, but she his an Avariel (elf whit wings and she got no level adjustment cause we dont care )) The thing his, our dm suggested her to go plain wizard until she get enough BA to get Arcane Archer, which is kinda long. She also is one of the childhood friend in the original party and wouldnt leave for no reason and wouldnt leave the colony (the party is kinda the leaders of the colony along whit another childhood friend NPC who is around lv 5 i think). I think i will talk to the dm and ask him to give her a better bow (she only has a bow + 1 ) so she can actually shoot some arrows. She did on her first levels, but now the arrows just doesnt make it compare to her spellcasting. If we can get her to archery again, maybe she will feel she have a different job then us. |

Now that is not a bad idea - would she be adverse to taking a level or two of ranger or fighter to get there faster? Then she could really shine! |
| ZiggZagg03-13-07, 02:00 PM | A better bow...for a Wizard?:thinks: Sure, and while we are at it, let us go find a new greatsword for the rogue. It sounds to me like you guys are putting her in a position where she isn't going to see what her character is capable of. It will take forever to reach The Arcane Archer prereqs going straight wizard. You already said she is new. Sooo...HELP HER OUT!:banghead: Don't let her sit there in the dark while you guys continue to grow. Give her some pointers. You are a team. Start acting like one. |
| Lakaniss03-13-07, 08:54 PM | I think the idea of the bow is the best one... |
| heardfamily03-13-07, 09:27 PM | I think getting her to take a few levels in ranger or somthing similar would be a good start. Unfortunately, you've got yourself into a tricky situation here. I am pretty sure you were not trying to be nasty, but from her perspective, it probably came across that way. As far as she's concerned, she is trying to get into a game which she seems relatively new at. She starts off completely missing the roleplaying side of the game because her team-mates overshadow her and give her no time to shine. This (not surprisingly) doesn't make her feel great. Then, two of the other players show up with spellcasters who make her's seem pretty mediocre. So she's lost the enjoyment of roleplaying because of people going too fast, and is losing the enjoyment of fighting because the same people have gone off and made character's superior to her's. To make things even worse she's probably going to assume that the two new wizards were ONLY made to make her's look useless. My advice (other than reverse time and make something other than wizards) is to slow down the roleplaying for starters. Maybe talk to the DM and get some situations happening where she is the only one with the knowledge to roleplay well -basically, give her some of the spotlight you've been hogging. From a machanics point of view, ranger or something is the only thing you can do. Her enthusiasm to play a spellcaster is probably squat now, so you need to find her something else to be good at, and whatever you do, don't ever make another character better than her's in her chosen area. Hope this helps. |
| jokey66503-13-07, 09:31 PM | "With." The word is "with". At first I though it to only be an error in the topic title, but I was quickly proven wrong. I can't read your post as it is now. |

Poor, poor English language...the internet is killing it! Be fair though, it probably isn't his first language. |
| Lakaniss03-13-07, 11:32 PM | sadly, not all of us are english. Yes dungeon and dragons sell books outside USA. Im not saying this excuse my spelling mystakes, and i thank you for telling me, i had no idea it was a mistake. But please, dont flame everyone on theyr spelling because you think they arnt trying! For some of us its harder then you might think. |
