I've been looking through one of my favorite sources for, well, everything D&D (crystalkeep.com/d20). On their page about base classes, I found an interesting variant Paladin class: the Incarnate (from Dragon 310, p. 52).

Is it just me, or does that get confusing? I mean really. It's the same name for a completely unrelated Incarnum class. Is there any way to specify the difference (if, say, the players created their characters in secret, and the Dungeon Master overlooked the fact that two characters chose 2 different classes with different names.

Would you think it would make rollplaying confusing to deal with the Incarnate (paladin) vs the Incarnate (Incarnum)?

And by the way, anyone have any advice on playing (RP or mechanics) an Incarnate (the true neutral Paladin wielding two opposing energies: Fire and Cold or Electricity and Acid and gaining an Elemental Minion)?

Maybe a paladin with demetrically opposed elemental alignment choices. Sort of a warrior for each element represented? You could try for the guy who likes to keep his own counsel, but tries to balance the use of any other element. He could eventually fall into taint for the zealous nature of his purges.

Can't help you with the Incarnate variant, but I tend to give Paladins a Domain to help round off their powers and as a nod to the fact that they are weak compared to most other classes in the PHB/SRD (only the Soulknife is weaker, and even that is debatable).

The Domain is Good for followers of a LG god. It is Law for LN gods. Paladins get the extra spell slot and the powers of the domain. All other restrictions apply (which amongst other things, means they would never get domain spells above spell level 4).

If your problem is name confusion, why not re-name one of the classes? Stick a sticky note in the book, with the new name, so you'll remember what you called what.

Renaming works. I never quite saw how "Incarnate" applied to a True Neutral character wielding opposing elements and paladin-type powers against all alignment extremes.

And 20goingon1232, I'm not sure if an Incarnate (the Paladin) can take the Good or Law domains, as this variant paladin is required to be devoted to neutrality.

Wielder? Paladin of Nature? Sword of Neutrality? That last one might work as a different name.
