Help with a wizard/sorceror [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-30-06, 04:06 PM Im looking to make an either Gnomish or Human Wizard\Sorceror but what Im wondering is whether or not I should prestige class him into an archmage? After looking a the class I wasnt quite sure I understood the total benefits of giving up spell slots for the different abilities. Thanks in advance for any input and help.

09-30-06, 04:16 PM The abilties of an Archmage are so huge that the sacrifice of a spell slot is required. For example, the ability to attach a different energy type to your spells is very important at some stages to ensure that your spells have any effect at all.

That said, if you're not sure about choices like that, you shouldn't be playing a character on a level where you can actually take that prestige class. The wizard in itself is an excellent class too, but the archmage is something that really makes your magic-user a powerful mage (now the only thing you need to do is locate a fancy-looking robe)

09-30-06, 04:39 PM Eh, I know I'll probably draw some flames for this, but I'm not a big fan of the Archmage. The abilities it gets are certainly useful, but I'm not sure they are really worth the cost in permanent spell slots. There are also feats that can partially or wholly replicate some of them, if you can go outside the core books.

10-01-06, 11:13 AM Not to mention, but if you split the levels evenly, you won't be able to go archmage til level 28! I'd just stick with one or the other, rather then go hybrid.

10-01-06, 12:34 PM Ok, ya give up spell slots. That's what a high INT is for. And seriously, how many good 9th lvl spells are there other than Mindrape/That pansy one they made up that's not evil? Wish? Please. Ya cast that maybe twice EVER. Energy Drain? Maximized Empowered Enervation is better (And you should be going Halruuan Elder or Incantrix anyway so the MM feats should also make it cheaper). Shapechange is good, but ya don't need it 24/7, alter self and Polymorph is just as good for utilitarian use, and if ya want it 24/7 just play a shifter.

Go Archmage.
