I'm actually a DM, but I thought I'd plunge the depths of the players' forum because one of my players is having great difficulty in creating a character. She's very new to the game, althoguh she managed to come up with quite an interesting character, but claimed it was 'too complicated' and she forgot his personality and everthing about him.
I pointed her in the direction of some more generic adventurer types, and she had a look through some of the starting packages, but just lacked inspiration for the finer details beyond race, class, and general motivation.
I was wondering if anyone here has any checklists, quizzes, methods, or just advice for character creation when your not so familiar with the rules and are feeling uninspired.
Thanks a bunch :cookie:

I read books. Read a really good book, or even watch your favorite TV show. There is tons of material there. You can't make everything original. I normally scour the CD boards trying to find a really cool backstory. Then I use elemtents from that and other stories to make a good background.

The Old 3.0 Hero Builder's Guidebook had just such a checklist for alignment, a breakdown of race/class effects (some of it is dated since it's 3.0), and a random chart to determine things in a character's background, such as Family, Social Status, Major Childhood events, etc...

I THINK that material is posted somewhere on the Wizards website, but I couldn't tell you exactly where.

Here is an NPC background generator. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20010112e)
It seems to be pretty much what is in the Hero Builders Guidebook, except that you don't get the tables, just random results. If you generate enough, you should be able to put something together, or just generate once and deal with what you get.
