ok well.... heres my problem.. im playing with a 2 class character.a Ranger and Fighter. the Ranger is at 3rd level and the Fighter is at 2nd level.(this is where the problem stands) i really need help on which class to level up next. at first i was planning to level up my Fighter next, ( if you dont know the fighter gets bonus feats at everyother level) so that would put my fighter at 3rd level meaning i dont get a bonus feat, because the fighter gets bonus feats at 1st and 2nd level, and then when i get to level up again i could get another bonus feat putting me at 4th level for my Fighter and then with that bonus feat i want to get cleave (i already have power attack), and with cleave, if you dont know, you can get an extra melee attack after dropping a target.. but then i feel like im leaving my tight ass Ranger behind, and seriously i like my Ranger.. and with out leveling up my Ranger im missing out on alot of the Rangers special feats such as: animal campanion, 2nd favored enemy,etc... now my question is do i keep leveling up my Fighter till i get the cleave or do i go for the Ranger and get the animal campanion,etc..??????WHAT DO I DO??

If you are asking from a power perspective ask on the character optimisation board. They will probably give you a more mathematically correct answer (I don’t go there)

The way I would make the choice is to consider my character. Dose it make sense to get a animal companion at this time. If yes take ranger. If no take fighter. Incidentally as you are now total level 6 you get 1 feat anyway. Also if you take 2 levels of fighter now you remain within the realm of equal level multicasting.

You will probably have this debate every time you consider taking a od level of fighter.

level up as ranger. You will get a feat for leveling up every 3 levels anyway. (1-3-6-9-12-15-18-21)

Don't forget if you have a favored class problem. If your race's favored class is not a fighter or a ranger, then you should level up as a fighter because leveling up as a ranger will cause an xp penalty (Unless your DM ignores the favored class rule).

Strictly speaking, they DO have a favored class. It's just that you can redefine what that favored class is freely for maximum benefit. NOT having a favored class means that you would always take XP penalties for uneven levels no matter what classes the levels were in.

For humans and half-elves, your favored class is the class you have the most levels in, everything else has to be no more than one level apart to avoid exp penalties.
